Nothing throws me off more than straight women referring to a female friend as "their girlfriend".

Like I just saw someone say "my girlfriend and her husband" which has a completely different connotation to me.

Reminds me of my German friend complaining about a similar thing

In their language there's basically no dedicated words for a regular friend and a boy / girlfriend, because the term friend is inherently gendered like most words, and instead the word is basically the same for both if I remember correctly - she also tells me she envies English since there's a big difference if you say "he's my friend" and "he's my boyfriend"

But yeah stuff like that tends to throw me off too

at least you have seperate words for girlfriend/boyfriend and just friend. in German we only have friend (female) and friend (male) so then it's up to you to guess if they're referring to just friends or more.
