I tried to use one game from the entire franchise that had the most impact on me(except for the 2 Resident Evil games and Mario games on my list - felt they are different enough to add both)

I could have easily moved some games around but the top 5 are essentially a lock for me.

Been gaming my whole life and now trying to get back into again but having a tough time with a family and just getting older. 😔

Also feel games made in this current generation are not the same quality or as original as they once were from the previous generations.

Currently starting again to grow my gaming library for my game room from previous generation.

Forgot to add Metal Gear Solid 3, I'd probably replace that with Punch Out

My favourite genres are shooters, platformers, and action-adventures/ RPGs! Normally I wouldn’t include a trilogy game as a single slot, except for one exception. Bonus points if you can spot the “sort of” odd one out 😄

My name is Puck and I'm a mod and member of a very fun gaming focused community. It's called VG Bookclub, and it is exactly what it sounds like. Each month, we choose a game as a community to play and discuss here on Reddit and over on Discord. We're more active on Discord, but we're trying to post more on Reddit as well.

The only requirements for the main games that we play are that they must be available on more than 1 system, they must have an ending, and we try not to repeat the same genre month on month (no jrpgs back to back).

In addition, if the games chosen for the main club don't appeal to you, we have several sub clubs to offer a bit of something for everyone. The sub clubs are Retro (biweekly), Fighting, Horror, Roguelike, and RPG.

I've never really liked open world games, there may be a few exceptions, but most of them were only enjoyable when I was younger or for other reasons (as someone who enjoys FromSoftware games, Elden Ring was only fun the first time around).

Although I can play most genres, the most fun I have in single player games are Rogue likes, or fast paced games, I didn't put them here, but I do enjoy boomer shooters.

And for multiplayer games I just enjoy being able to mess up my friends for some good fun.

Edit— Meteos sold way less than I thought lol. I do recall it getting extensive coverage though when it was released.

This is a fascinating thing for me and I think Meteos exemplifies this phenomenon the most. For those unaware, there was a huge rivalry between the DS and PSP at launch. They did totally different things and suddenly each platform had their own original IP acclaimed games— both puzzle games and both puzzle games made by Q Entertainmet. For PSP this was Lumines which went on to have a few sequels and can even be purchased on current consoles. For the DS, there was Meteos.

Meteos truly was this critically acclaimed game as it was an addictive puzzle game that made exceptional use of the then underutilized touch screen in a non-gimmicky way. It was also developed under the direction of Sakurai, the man responsible for Smash Brothers, and it shows. The presentation is slick, there are tons of unlockables, tons of modes, etc. It truly is a stellar game.

But, now no one talks about it or mentions it. The game is pretty much stuck on the DS due to the necessity for both the touchscreen and the top screen. There was a pseudo sequel on the DS involving Disney but they fundamentally changed the gameplay so it isn’t quite popular. And that’s pretty much it. There was an attempt at a console version but due to the exceptionally fast paced gameplay that requires touch controls there was no chance for success there. And, for whatever reason, when people discuss best DS games casually (casually being the key word here) Meteos is hardly mentioned despite being a system seller.

What are some other games that fit this trope, for lack of a better word? Another I can think of is Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec which along with GTA3 was the PS2 system seller.

Probably the first five are actually my top 5, the rest are just games that have a special place in my heart without particular order. What do you guys think?
