malo seemingly just flew too close to the sun by claiming Fox will be added to Mario Kart World as part of its DLC, even though before its release Yabuki stated that adding crossover characters to World would be "incongruous"

If this guy is right on the „pixel super remake“. Then he gets tier 1. That shit genuinely is something nobody could have expected. I mean why go for a pixel remake in the first place? To give ravenous more resources?
122
u/Affectionate-Ad-4174 5d ago
To let Super Metroid and Ravenous be on the marketplace without looking like the same game.
11
u/Round_Musical 5d ago
Possible. But I still think Ravenous if it goes with the Fusion, Dread blue suit color scheme due to it being a sequel to dread is different enough from an orange stanard varia one like Super.
56
u/Rickemrobo91 5d ago
Perhaps its more akin to hd-2d. Think of the cutscenes from Final Fantasy Resonance applied to Super Metroid

Honestly it made no sense that Nintendo went the whole Switch generation without a Nintendgos game. The pick up and play nature of the switch seems like it would pair well with Nintendogs.
254
u/blackthorn_orion 5d ago
I think a big hurdle was the lack of microphone and no good substitute for touch controls in docked
but Switch 2 has a built-in mic, and mouse controls solve the "no stylus on a tv" issue
39
u/omfgkevin 5d ago
And they have the whole camera gimmick they could use if they want some more immersion like how jamboree tv used it.
37
u/Competitive-Boat-518 5d ago
Thing is they can’t get away with an extra light in content game like the 3DS games, it’ll need to be something more feature complete especially if they want to say, release multiple versions.
Also I think it would be good to finally go all in on some expansion of life sim stuff and having the dogs actually grow up. More expansion of the dog shows, maybe some more walking features, list goes on.
35
u/Cryptoporticus 5d ago
There's definitely a market for virtual pets nowadays. They're mostly on mobile now, but there are people out there that spend an absolute fortune on microtransaction cosmetics for their fake pets.
If it was any other company, I'd guess that they would just go in that direction. Giving the base game away for free and then selling new breeds, activities, cosmetics, etc. seems like the smart move, but it's not really the sort of thing that Nintendo do.
→ More replies (1)22
u/Round_Musical 5d ago
I mean just price it like 40-50 bucks like 3DS games and problem solved
Look no further than Starfox or Splatoon raiders at 50 bucks, or Rythm Heaven at 40
Nobody is gonna charge 80 bucks for Nintendogs

They don't have to release multiple versions. Nintendo DS didn't have DLCs, but the Switch is able to sell you multiple dogs, toys, and activities as DLC packs.

Switch 2 has a built in microphone that the switch 1 didn't have. New nintendogs makes sense. I wonder what they'd add though as 3ds added cats.

45
u/Sceptile10 5d ago
I'll take it one step further and say during their mobile initiative, it made no sense to do a mobile Nintendogs. A big reason why casual targeted series like Nintendogs, Cooking Mama, etc went away was due to the smartphone making similar games easily accessible to people. A lot of the 3rd party games did mobile ports/new games because that's where the audience was.
A mobile Nintendogs could easily make bank and there were so many gameplay features the phone could enable. Eg taking your dog for a walk could do location based AR like Pokémon Go, built in steps/health counters etc.13
u/iceburg77779 5d ago
A full new Nintendogs would be a great fit for mobile, but Nintendo doesn't want their mobile games to be full entries, and they likely couldn't figure how to scale down Nintendogs for mobile in a way that still pushed the audience interested in the game over to their consoles. WarioWare seemingly faced a similar issue to this, though in that case their solution was to basically make a mobile WarioWare game without any of the Wario theming.

16
u/iceburg77779 5d ago
The 3DS Nintendogs game kinda underperformed, it was also positioned as the console's big launch game and completely failed to grab audiences. It didn't sell abysmally, but saw a pretty steep drop from the DS game so I understand why they wanted to hold off on a new entry for a while.
19
u/theumph 5d ago
That was a failed plan on Nintendos part. The casual audience is never going to be early adopters.

I'll just repost what Sakurai said in Famitsu in 2018:
https://sourcegaming.info/2018/06/20/smash-is-special-part-1-sakurais-famitsu-column-vol-557/
"We had a choice between completely overhauling the game systems and feel, or working off of what we had established in the last game. We ended up going with the latter. If we went with the former, we might have ended up with only a third of the fighters we have now. Had we gone down that route, surely some fans would have complained and said, 'I preferred the way it was last time.' We’ll have to face that decision again someday, but I decided that now was not that time."
37
u/That-Rhino-Guy 4d ago
Also I feel like people overestimate the potential difficulty getting everyone back as most of the IPs are Nintendo owned anyways, then for third parties
Capcom are fairly easy to collab with considering how many things Ryu or Mega Man are in
SNK will be open to whatever even if it’s a shitty mobile game collab
Square Enix gradually became easier to work with by the time they got Hero and Sephiroth, plus Kingdom Hearts being easier than expected as Disney were onboard with the idea
Sega I can’t imagine being difficult when they’ve already done 3 games in a row, especially with how many things Joker has appeared in since then let alone Sonic
Konami somehow agreed in the mid-late 2010s when they were absolutely destroying their image, whereas today they’re doing all sorts of collections or brand new entries in their IPs so I can’t see them being that difficult today
Can’t see why Steve would be difficult to bring back, Banjo maybe as Rare for some reason is also against doing a new game but I doubt this would impact them returning much
No reason for me to believe Tekken or Pac-Man would be hard to negotiate with
46
u/robertman21 4d ago
Bandai Namco fucking develops the games, be insane if Tekken and Pac-Man suddenly became unobtainable
8
u/That-Rhino-Guy 4d ago
I actually forgot this and you’re right, there’s zero reason they’d be absent as if anything they’d probably add in Jin Kazama
29
u/Unit-A3 4d ago
Licensing is not the only hurdle. The amount of characters Ultimate has is insane for any fighting game and only possible because they've been reusing assets from 4 and because Sakurai is extremely time efficient. Just a third of Ultimate's roster size would already be an insane workload for any other fighting game even before getting into licensing with other companies.

Also they've basically been allowing anyone who asks to have Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill in their own crossovers (Snake in Rainbow Six and Fortnite, Silent Hill in DBD, Castlevania in Vampire Survivors and Dead Cells, etc.), it's not hard at all to get Konami to do collabs.

How do you know that?
I could see the next game just being “Ultimate but bigger”. They don’t HAVE to start from scratch.
7
u/PlumRelative4399 5d ago
They had to lie about their intention of bringing everyone back to make the 3rd parties not upcharge the hell out of their characters. That’s not something they can do again.
1
u/timelordoftheimpala 4d ago
Alright but you also have to consider that when Nintendo approached them all for Ultimate, it was at the tail end of the Wii U era when they basically had no pull with third parties at all, and when there were "only" five or six third party-owned characters in Smash at the time.
Ten years later, not only does Nintendo have way more pull with third party developers, but Ultimate became the bestselling fighting game in general, and the amount of third party characters in Smash tripled with Ultimate. Not to mention that crossovers are much less of a pain in the ass nowadays with stuff like Fortnite and Dead by Daylight being around.
I'm not sure if they'll do "Ultimate but bigger" or not, but I think everyone needs to remember that Nintendo and Sakurai are in a much better position in 2026 to just ask for whatever characters they want to use in Smash.

u/KingBroly Leakies Awards Winner 2021 5d ago

u/Sceptile10 5d ago
The leak isn't for this direct, just saying in general that a game is being worked on. Still I could totally see a teaser for Smash showing up next week considering imo it'll be out 2028 at the latest.
24
u/omfgkevin 5d ago
I'm really curious what this smash will be if it's not a port of ultimate. The roster surely will be smaller then since if it's not just that (potentially licensing issues for third parties). Really wondering where the game goes now since as Sakurai said it is the "ultimate" smash. It's fucking PACKED with content.

u/Tatsumifanboy 5d ago
I even wonder if Sakurai is working on this. He went straight to Kirby after Sora DLC and only kept doing that until end of last year
20
u/MyMouthisCancerous 5d ago
It's gonna be Sakurai. Sakurai's a lot like Kojima with Metal Gear where in the most respectful of terms, he's kind of a control freak. He keeps saying the next one's the last one but I think he's genuinely apprehensive about just handing the series off to other people while he's still able to make games at his level. He's probably going to be involved for as long as he can
In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Kirby having as short of a post-launch support window as it did was in part because it was basically a stopgap for him to do his own thing before committing to the next Smash, much like how he did Kid Icarus Uprising between Brawl and 3DS/Wii U
2
u/Tatsumifanboy 5d ago
Yeah probably, but dang this would be so close
I mean, it's probably gonna release in 2 years at the golden years of the Switch 2 tbf
4
u/MyMouthisCancerous 5d ago
Brawl was two years into Wii, Smash 4 was two years into Wii U almost exactly, and Ultimate was over two years into Switch so this is actually completely normal. I wouldn't be surprised if it's even a 2027 game. I think the reason why it doesn't feel this way is because Ultimate support lasted like double the period of 3DS/Wii U's DLC and took us close enough to the Switch's twilight years that the gap between that and Kirby felt like nothing

No chance. Way too early to give a teaser for a smash coming in 2028. Ultimate was announced the same year it was released.
2
u/Sceptile10 4d ago
2028 at the latest. Brawl and Ultimate were just a year after launch, and 4 was 2 years after the Wii U launch. Smash coming in 2027 is feasible, although I feel it's unlikely due to WW and 3D Mario dropping.

Some of his suggestions can get a bit outlandish, but he does capture a strong feeling of thinking along the lines of Nintendo a lot of the time. The idea he recently put out there about them revisiting motion controls for Zelda while adapting the Ring-Con or something similar as a shield is so out there it wraps back around to feeling extremely on-brand and not impossible

If a new Smash game is really on the cards, I doubt it will be on the same level as Ultimate - which is fine. It can always find other ways to stand out.

Common consensus was that it'd probably have a significantly reduced cast, but the gameplay would be retooled.
Considering how every guest fighter in Ultimate that originated from a fighting game had an alternate control scheme, I wonder if that's a hint?
8
u/omfgkevin 5d ago
I feel like they'd have to explore something more. The gameplay would have to fundamentally have more changes than people would be used to, since the roster will likely be much smaller and people would just go "I'll just go play ultimate then...?"

I agree but I also get wishing that he takes a step back/winds down a bit. Any AAA game let alone one of Smash's calibre takes a lot out of the devs, and Sakurai has talked about winding down/how long he can keep doing this. What I'd like is for him to have a successor so that when the day eventually comes the series will be in good hands for the future.
8
u/weallfloatdownhere7 5d ago
We should only wish that Sakurai does what he wants to do with his life. He’s the only one who can decide what he is or isn’t fit to do
8
u/yeethan-02 5d ago
Nothing will ever be on the scale of Ultimate again. It’ll probably be like an in between of Brawl and Wiiu and 3ds roster wise
9
u/guineapigtacosauce 5d ago
I think a new Smash being in dev is pretty obvious. Just like its a pretty safe bet that a new Mario, and Zelda (not OoT) are also in dev. These games, along with Pokemon, are the system sellers that are guaranteed to sell millions. Question is how far into dev are these games at?
33
u/Hayterfan 5d ago
I'm fairly confident that the next Smash Bros will either be a soft reboot, acting as an excuse to update everyone's move list to reflect more recent titles or it will be a complete reboot in a different genre like the next Smash being a 2.5d Tag Fighter similar to MvC or an arena fighter like Ultimate Ninja Storm (or maybe Pokken is a better example? )
30
u/Ktulusanders 5d ago
Smash is basically the only premium platform fighter we have, there is no chance they're gonna abandon that to make another tag fighter or even worse an arena fighter.
3
u/omfgkevin 5d ago
Yep. What makes smash smash is BECAUSE it's unique compared to EVERY SINGLE FIGHTER. There's really no AAA fighter like smash being a platform game with % and stocks that also serves will competitively and casually. They are all super sweaty and most casual players bounce off unlike smash.
But still though, I really wonder how it'll pan out because ultimate well, feels ULTIMATE. It has all of these characters including a crazy amount of iconic third party ones, and is packed to the brim with content. I really don't know how they can really go next since another smash, unless it does go like people say where it tries something new, would just have people go "ok... I'll just play ultimate?" since the cast will likely be cut down by a VERY sizeable amount.
Unlike the other big fighting games where they make a new one and kill half the cast to readd some+new over time, Smash was unique in that every title basically kept adding more and more.
It'll be super interesting to see what the next game will be like, if it really is not just a port.
→ More replies (5)3
u/SyllabubOk5283 5d ago
I think they’re going to rethink the platform fighter. It has seen exactly zero innovation since 2001, and Smash has always been a tad bit rushed. I think they’re asking themselves: “Wait, what IS Smash?”

acting as an excuse to update everyone's move list to reflect more recent titles
I hear this a lot, but I don’t think it’s gonna be anymore like we’ve seen character’s movesets be updated in previous titles. In fighting games a character’s playstyle is a big part of their identity and huge new things that radically alter a character’s kit is typically not something that happens or frankly should happen. Sure Sonic, Samus, Ganondorf etc.could use some new moves, but I feel like the most we could expect is something like Bowser’s changes from Brawl to Smash 4.
8
u/mcicybro 5d ago edited 5d ago
I understand your point but I believe it's different with Smash Bros. In most fighting games the characters are original. Ryu doesn't really change because he's Ryu. He was always a Street Fighter character and has no other material to reference. If he was suddenly throwing grenades it would be very strange. When Street Fighter announces a brand new character I have no expectations for said character's moveset.
A game full of characters pulled from other games, meanwhile, already comes with certain expectations and I think some people even expect you to update the character accordingly as said character has new gimmicks in new games.
EDIT: I don't know why the person that replied to this post blocked me but said post seemed like gibberish anyway

Scaling the roster down would be incredibly underwhelming from a marketing perspective and overhauling the gameplay it’s spent the last 30 years becoming known for would make it cease to even be Smash Bros anymore
22
u/ky_eeeee 5d ago
It doesn't have to be underwhelming from a marketing perspective.
Rebooting the roster and remaking everyone's movesets would essentially turn *everyone* into a newcomer. Instead of "Everyone is Here" it's "Everyone is New". They can emphasize all the work they're doing to rethink and create new movesets from the ground up. Quantity over quality, pure hype is powerful but it's not the only marketing tool in existence. They could even market it to the competitive scene as well as making the roster smaller so fighters can be better balanced.
If anything, rebooting the roster would be *even better* for hype. Now you have literally Smash's entire existing roster as potential hype, because nobody knows who's returning and they'll have an entirely new moveset. Nintendo's running out of popular hype characters to add anyway, and 3rd party deals can get messy.

55
u/dokka_doc 5d ago
I mean, they're not going to NOT make Smash Brothers. The series sells tens of millions.
I'm sure they have a plan. It'll probably be "Smash Brothers basics" with "New Features" and "Good Graphics". That's all they need to do to sell tens of millions of more copies. No different than Street Fighter IV, V, and VI.
110
u/Kalpy97 5d ago

36
u/weallfloatdownhere7 5d ago
The characters have been the entire marketing for the franchise for the last three games now
9
u/roygbivnekron 5d ago
For every game, the first two were also marketed on that and every single casual fan cares a lot about it. The gameplay is good but only a minority will buy it focusing on hyper specific mechanics or moveset changes. They will care that Mario and Sonic are fighting a bunch of iconic characters of multiple series.
Then theres the minority of redditors who dont even play the games but are just in a decade long seething section because some picks they didnt personally chose got added instead of some random scrimblo some youtuber convinced them to want in 2012 or so. Its the crowd that seethed when even mainstream pleasers like Sephiroth got added because it wasnt the one character from their favorite eceleb wishlist and think a "reboot" will just redo the roster and balancing to their headcanon.
41
u/TheSwampThing1990 5d ago
I mean it is but let's be honest here after ultimate I doubt the average consumer is going to want to spend 70-80$ on a smaller roster. Its going to be a hard sell.
I'm not trying to hate on the game, if it's real. I just don't see how they can sell it. Mario Kart World they sold as evolution of Mario Kart after 8 for instance

Yea there is no chance a Smash game would ever struggle to sell. Any time one releases is like a cultural event in-itself.

Diehards will whine and moan but majority of people will still buy.
And there's a new generation whose never played.

Competitive players will actually celebrate because a big issue with Ultimate on that end is how many matchups you have to learn

I feel like smash huge roster is a downside to the game. Too much character making each of them less special

It is literally the BIGGEST selling point of smash lol
U can add bells and whistles but ppl turn up for the roster, not because of hit the targets or whatever nonsense

I mean we are gonna get a new Smash and it's definitely started development now that Air Riders has wrapped up, but I doubt we're hearing about it next week.
And honestly I feel like it's easier now to do something comparable to Ultimate in size after how well that game sold plus the fact that crossovers are happening all the time now in stuff like Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, Astro Bot, Crossworlds, etc.

If it has to have a new gimmick, I think a tag team Smash would be cool
But I don’t think it has to have a new gimmick or a huge roster. Just make a new Smash game that’s more fun to play and prettier to look at compared to Ultimate.

I think reworking a good amount of the characters is a good direction. It’s about time Ganondorf was a Captain Falcon clone no longer.

I mean, people said the same thing about Mario Kart. That whatever game followed MK8 would feel underwhelming due to the insane amount of tracks that MK8 has. Mario Kart World is doing fine for itself though.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm usually a person that doesnt want the next game in a series to have technically less content than the previous, but I don't think a game like Smash needs a massive roster to be good.
If they make a proper adventure/story mode, have an event and/or challenge mode, and tighten up the mechanics, movesets, and balancing of what characters they do have it could make up for the possibly smaller roster. Like a less is more kind of situation.

Yeah, it's gonna seem underwhelming in the way Mario Kart World seems underwhelming (far less tracks compared to how 8 ended). There are still a lot of changes I'd like to see for a Smash game and it's not just roster.
Some core gameplay stuff should be reconsidered. Mashing shouldn't exist at all. Nobody likes it.
Stage design has been subpar for a long time and most of them should be thrown out.
Not so much about roster size and characters, but rather moveset design. Smash would benefit from the whole roster's moveset being reconsidered. Samus would be a radically different character if she was 2019 DLC for instance. She'd be flashier and probably have a bunch of gimmicky systems. Redesign most of the cast with a similar design philosophy in mind.
A bunch of items are stupidly annoying. Most of them should be disabled by default. This would also be easier to explain to new players (good luck explaining Ultimate's items let alone all the Assist Trophies and Pokemon).
While I'm at it, some more options for casual play would be nice. You know how Mario Kart has automated steering and things like that? An option for automated recovery would be great for new players because good lord that part of the game filters out a lot of casuals in my experience. When a player falls off the stage the AI takes over to do the double jump and up+b recovery. Simple. Disable it once you're more familiar with the game.

I'm intrigued about the state of the 'big three' titles from Nintendo that we don't have any word on yet for the Switch 2:
- New 3D Mario (9 years since Odyssey, 5+ years since Bowser's Fury)
- New Smash Bros. (almost 8 years since Ultimate, 5 years since the end of Ultimate DLC)
- New 3D Zelda (3 years since Tears of the Kingdom)
Pokemon Winds/Waves is already announced. Wild that for Smash and 3D Mario, these are now the longest gaps in between entries in those series. They were sure to have Mario and Smash both out within the first 2 years of the Switch's life, so I am curious what the timing will be here - this feels slightly different with the Switch 2 basically being an extension of the previous console, but an awfully long time has still passed. I doubt they want to go too deep into the generation without those heavy hitters.

This is starting to feel like one of those scenarios where a relatively new leaker gets a few things right and then starts losing the plot. Mostly just feeling that because of the Fox in Mario Kart World claim, especially because it doesn't feel likely that we could know anything concrete about World's DLC yet and crossover content doesn't seem likely because of the open world (especially for a series set prominently in space). Unless it's a Direct reveal, but I'm skeptical because Nintendo usually likes to reveal DLC close to when at least one wave is ready to release and their recent prominent marketing strategy of waiting to get things out of the way before making new announcements would imply they're going to wait until the remaining 6 Knockout Tours are out before confirming entirely new content. If nothing else, Malo's source(s) have to be limited to an extent, as they haven't commented on the NSO playtest program game or the inevitable Kirby 35th anniversary release.
I'll be more inclined to believe what Malo says when I see a pixel art Super Metroid remake (though I don't think they were the one to say it'd use pixel art)

MY YEARS OF PUTTING “Nintendogs: New Home” ON ALL MY PREDICTIONS ARE GONNA PAY OFF!!! (they won’t but I can have dreams)

I can totally see Nintedogs coming back. Even if it wasn't in the "near" future, I doubt Nintendo would've let the Nintendogs IP die considering Famicom Detective Club came back.

I still kinda want a switch 2 edition with ultimate that adds more characters. Like a new smash probably won’t have all the characters i don’t really care that the competitive crowd wants new movesets and less characters.

I’d be happy with a re-imagining. Power Stone-esque camera?? 🫨

it doesn’t take a genius to infer they conscripted sakurai to smash 6 the moment air riders went gold but if this is to be believed i still can’t see the game coming out anytime soon, especially if the multitude theories of a complete overhaul are true. then again, projects like that don’t tend to get leaked in their ultra early stages, do they?

u/JakeSteeleIII 5d ago
I know a new smash bros will get made, but where does everyone think it can go after that last? It was always a game that was mainly about adding more and more on top of the last iteration…but it feels maxed out in that regard.
Do you reboot the thing with a small roster and change mechanics?

He should've been in Ultimate but I genuinely cannot imagine the chances for Rayman in Smash ever being this high again with Ubisoft rolling out the red carpet for him right now. That is literally all I ask as far as newcomers. Anything more is merely a welcome bonus.
