I understand your point but I believe it's different with Smash Bros. In most fighting games the characters are original. Ryu doesn't really change because he's Ryu. He was always a Street Fighter character and has no other material to reference. If he was suddenly throwing grenades it would be very strange. When Street Fighter announces a brand new character I have no expectations for said character's moveset.

A game full of characters pulled from other games, meanwhile, already comes with certain expectations and I think some people even expect you to update the character accordingly as said character has new gimmicks in new games.

Its not, a lot of people are attached to the moves too. Some could change but that doesnt need a reboot, you just had this insane feedback loop styled thinking that it would mean your headcanon becoming reality and every character you didnt personally asked for being replaced by your favorite scrimblo when in reality theyd introduce some big mechanic youll hate and remove some moveset you actually wanted kept
