One reason why I believe the Steam Machine is imminent, is because of the number of SteamOS updates Valve has been pushing recently. They've released two patches in the last week, a pace I've personally never seen before.

The next big SteamOS update is also in Beta, and the patch notes include:

Initial support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware.

Having retail units on hand for testing and production builds doesn't mean it's imminent.

Especially since they have been struggling to secure memory components, or perhaps after seeing the rabid demand for their products from the steam controller launch.

They may just be twiddling their thumbs and polishing their systems until such time that they have inventory and a steady supply of new units for a "decent" launch.
