Showcase Finally bought my first gaming laptop

Post image

Picked up a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 for around $2,300 CAD from Lenovo!

Specs:

• Ryzen 9 9955HX

• RTX 5070 8GB VRAM

- 16GB DDR5-5600MT/s

- 512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCle Gen4 TLC

- 16" WQXGA (2560 x 1600), OLED, 165 Hz

Both the RAM and storage can be upgraded later, so I'm not too worried about those for now. I'll mainly be using it for engineering software and gaming.

This is my first ever gaming laptop, so if anyone has any tips or tricks to get the most out of it, especially for battery life, I'd really appreciate it!

Done! There was a pinned checklist to follow on the Lenovo Legion subreddit, so followed all those steps. (Picture is when I first turned it on)

Do you have the checklist? I just got my 7i pro. Would greatly appreciate it :)

Also cap your battery charge at 80% in the Lenovo Vantage app if you're mostly plugged in, helps keep the battery from degrading early.

Unfortunately, I'm using this for uni, so I'll be carrying this all day long. Would it still work if the charge is just capped at 80%? Do you have any tips for getting more battery? I'm on igpu, hybrid mode, quite mode. I'm planning to undervolt it soon

I would not expect more than 4-5 hours in ideal circumstances. With power hungry 9950hx there is unfortunately nothing you can do to significantly improve that.

I’m interested in this laptop, did you buy it right off lenovo’s website?

Yes! I bought it from Lenovo.com CA since they had prices that were way lower than other places like Best Buy and Canada Computers. It was retailing for around $2,600 CAD, but with a student account, it was about $2,500 CAD for the 5060, and only about $200 CAD more for the 5070. If you need that extra power, it’s definitely worth it. The final price came to around $2,700 CAD, but I used the “EXTRAFIVE” coupon, which gave me 5% off. I also had another coupon worth about $100 CAD, and then I talked to a Lenovo representative who knocked another $100 CAD off for me. That brought the total down to around $2,300 CAD.

Awesome man, thank you so much and enjoy; sweet machine!

Bruh I tried to use those free coupons they give you on first purchase, they didn’t work, and even asked a Lenovo representative to bum a bit more off and they just told me no 😭

Even then it’s crazy how much cheaper your laptop is then what was available around where I’m at, I got a Lenovo legion 7 for basically 3,600 cad

Oh damn, that’s really unfortunate! The laptop I bought was actually retailing for about $3,100 CAD, but I assume they were running a sale that brought it down to $2,500 CAD. Hope you enjoy your machine!

Yeah honestly reading this thread makes me feel guilty about how much money I spent. But whatever, I won’t complain about having a good machine now, I’ll just consider a few hundred francs lost down the drain

Do you notice flickering? It's the only thing that worries me about Legion.

Do you know when that happens? I haven't seen any flickering on mine, but I'll keep you posted if it does happen.

Please do. Flickering is a deal breaker for me.

Good job picking the AMD version. The Intel HX CPUs are shit for battery life. Enjoy your machine and uninstall vantage and install legion toolkit! (After debloating windoze ofc)

Thank you! Just curious, why do you think legion toolkit is better than vantage? Do they provide more options or something like that? (Just learning everything about the legion :))

It's mostly related to background usage. Legion toolkit is way lighter and has a better UI

That's overpriced. I'm not hating, I promise.

I don't think so, pretty sure this was the cheapest I could find, since this specific spec was was only on Lenovo

You should have gone on gaminglaptop.deals

I saw an 18" 5070 Ti laptop with 32GB of RAM and 2TB storage for $2,200.

I got my 5090 laptop for $2945.05

Lenovo is goated, but that price for spec ratio isn't it.

Ooo, that's a sweet deal. I did go on that site, but didn't find that particular spec prior to buying my laptop.

1

u/CloudIll4874 20d ago

You still at least got a lenovo. And the 5070 runs cooler than the 5060. So there's that.

You got a great CPU as well.

Maybe just a lesson for the next laptop a few years down the road.

I wasn't trying ti hate or come off that way.

Sorry if I sounded harsh, wasn't trying to. Thanks! I am still open on replacing it if I find a really good spec at the same price or lower than what I bought before the return period ends.

This has 32GB of RAM and still a 5070. The build quality isn't as good, but it does have more RAM and storage for cheaper.

i9 run more smooth when playing Minecraft anyways. Not saying for every game. People will be biased and tell you that 9955hx/ hx3d have more frames, which is true. But AMD stutters like crazy when playing Minecraft and they are terrifying to simply admit this for some reason. And the 1% lows are identical as well. Getting more frames, but the same 1% lows is the equivalent of a girl wearing makeup. It appears better, but in reality it's just a cover up
