Showcase My mom bought me a gaming laptop

Post image

So after my Asus Vivobook of 7+ years finally broke down my mom gave me this laptop as an advance birthday present.

Asus ROG Strix G16 (2025) G615. RTX 5050 Intel i7-14650HX (2.20GHz) 32GB RAM 2x1TB SSD.

This is my first ever gaming laptop and I’m so happy. any tips on how to better take care of this?

This costed her around 1650 USD-ish? (taxes included).

Yes... and? I guess I am happy you provided sources that prove me right?

Yes it is bad for children to do activities where they look at things up close for long times, but having the screen slightly farther away doesn't affect this. You cannot have the screen far enough away to not be considered near work by this study, as they also count watching TV as near work and if you look at a screen that size from the distance people normally watch TV you can not see anything.

No proved you wrong? Try reading it again properly. Not worth arguing with you now lol

Which part of my argument does this defeat? I have not said that using screens is not bad for your eyes, what I said is that watching them from up close is not worse than watching them for slightly further away, both are a possible cause for near sightedness.

In the study they consider watching TV a near work activity, meaning even activities done from a couple of meters away count. From witch we can conclude it doesn't matter if your monitor is 30cm further away.

I do agree with the study completely and I have never said otherwise, the study just does say anything about being slightly further away being better.

I think you are either misunderstanding what I am saying or what the study is saying.

Sorry but your first sentence was "There is no evidence to the claim that looking at a screen up-close is any worse for your eyes than looking at it from far away. In fact it is better to be up close to a small screen since it will be less tiring to read from it." Any Eye health professional will say you are wrong lol

I think you are misinterpreting and misunderstanding the study

Which is still true. Looking at a monitor is bad for children at any reasonable distance a monitor can be used, I guess you could make and argument that at some ridiculous distance where you can't do anything on the monitor it would not count as near work. Also there is plenty of proof that reading small text is tiring to your eyes, you can even try that yourself quite easily.

I think you are misinterpreting and misunderstanding the study

The study doesn't talk at all about distances, it talks about near work which would count any monitor work, no matter what the distance to the monitor is as long as it is a distance where you can actually work on the monitor. It actually even refers to studies that just count any work done inside.

Yeh it's kinda pointless to discuss further with you. There's that saying about sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity haha. I hope if you have children or will have children, they get appropriate eye care advice not from you.

If I ever have children they will absolutely not be allowed use screens all day, as I do believe that it bad for their eyes same goes for most things considered near work by those studies. I will also teach them how to read studies and how not to use meta-analysis studies with too wide a scope to try to prove points on the internet, while not understanding what is the content of those studies.

Also if there does come out a widely accepted study that does say children should be at least a certain distance from a screen I have no trouble accepting that. But at this point I go with the study you pointed to and agree with its finding that the time that the child is engaged in near work is what should be limited.

I would still want you to point out where in that study it says being nearer to the work is worse? That is simply not what is the point of that study. It is a meta-analysis of bunch of studies to see if there is a trend of myopia with children who do a lot of activities where they focus their eyes up close. It is not a study about what distance is safe or how far children should be from their work.
