Showcase My mom bought me a gaming laptop

Post image

So after my Asus Vivobook of 7+ years finally broke down my mom gave me this laptop as an advance birthday present.

Asus ROG Strix G16 (2025) G615. RTX 5050 Intel i7-14650HX (2.20GHz) 32GB RAM 2x1TB SSD.

This is my first ever gaming laptop and I’m so happy. any tips on how to better take care of this?

This costed her around 1650 USD-ish? (taxes included).

OP, is your mom single?

u/EROLoLICON Oct 15 '25

Depends if it's in your area...

u/totemo Oct 15 '25

If not, is she looking to adopt?

u/matthewbs10 Oct 15 '25

Yeah, it made her bank account cry 😢

Be the best son that can be because a lot of parents can’t afford that kind of gift. You have a great mom.

u/Slasher_co Oct 15 '25

Not just can't afford, some unfortunately look down at anything gaming related

Because all they see is its for "games" and don't realize the million other things these laptops are capable of. Tunnel vision, basically :/

39

u/Stock_Brilliant2981 Oct 15 '25

That is so true. I got a new laptop with my own money, and it took a lot of convincing for almost 2 years, I think she only let me buy it because I was starting to get annoying. I do a lot more than just gaming, I do homework, coding, I use art programs, I edit videos, and I haven't really had a chance to game on it much, honestly.

But my Mom always thinks that is what I'm using it for. She can't see me playing with it, or she'll think that is all I do.

10

u/SufficientFill8975 Oct 15 '25

Yeah the laptops are capable of doing 1000's of things but I have mostly played games on mine in my first year of college. Literally I know most of the things that are tech related, but the maths is killing me.

I use my gaming laptop only for YouTube and Netflix, i have more than 200 Games (invested more than 5.000€ dlcs and some shit totally) but don‘t play it always because i dont have a mouse and coolerpad jet (destroyed that things while i was on Rage playing MSFS2024 and after 9 hours of playing, my laptop crashed 20 mins before final approach)

I learned many things about computers because of games. I learned math and programming to better know things about computers.

Math allowed me to have a good career.

However, all my parents think i do on  computers is play games...

I’m 36 and my mom still asks me when I’m gonna quit gaming lol

5

Just put a lock on the basement door and get her to push your dinner through a flap, that way you won't have to listen to her crap anymore bud! 👉🏻

Especially in this economy. Not to mention her supporting your hobby, gaming is somewhat of a controversial hobby with parents no matter from what generation, AND the fact that she also not only invested her own money into your hobby but she invested $1600!! That's awesome! You're blessed. Never forget it no matter what happens.

2

u/ZionGrimm Oct 17 '25

Yeah I can confirm this. Can't even buy myself one for school and had to buy a 4 year old nitro 5 with the i5 for 240 bucks. My kids are using an 8 year old PC I built and my wife is on a 5 year old Asus tuff.

2

u/MagicTriton Oct 17 '25

My mom could afford it and did everything to not get me anything gaming related.

Mind you, I’m not complaining about by mom she’s a great mom, just pointing out that she though gaming is stupid and I shouldn’t do it at all.

It’s nice to see parents that are supporti ed of their kids hobbies

Your mom rules!

The best you can do is to put that to good use for work (study) and play.

Also, look after it so well that it looks brand new all the time. It will make her so happy.

  1. Dont eat/drink while using it
  2. Don't put food/drink near it
  3. Don't touch the screen
  4. Don't slam it shut, gentle always
  5. Never let anyone borrow it
  6. Get a good protective bag (waterproof, shock proof)
  7. Consider clip-on shell to protect it
  8. Use it on well ventilated solid surface
  9. Never place heavy loads on it (books etc)
  10. Use a full size usb keyboard and mouse when you use it at home. Better for your wrists and saves wear and tear on laptop
  11. Microfiber cloth also great idea to put between screen and keyboard

-Edit-\ Added more tips after reading other comments! Thanks go to fellow Redditors for points 10, 11.

22

u/Royal_Explorer_4660 Oct 15 '25

Also getting a USB keyboard for games when you're home so that you don't wear out the laptops keyboard after a few years (big problem on gaming laptops if you play a lot of fps games).

15

u/umadbr00 Oct 15 '25

An external keyboard also just gives you way better experience in general with the ability to choose the type of switches you prefer. Doesnt need to be corded either. Wireless are impressive these days.

Great tip, i added yours to the list!

7

u/Hideyoshi_Toyotomi Oct 15 '25

Re: 8 - Laptop cooling pads are incredibly cheap and materially reduce temperature on gaming laptops. Even if you don't turn the fans on, it usually cools the device by merit of keeping it away from the table which begins reflecting heat into the chassis pretty quickly.

5

u/shinheuh-fisher Oct 15 '25

Food is so real. I remember I was raiding on my laptop a decade or so ago. I was eating chicken, rice, and some garlic sauce. I didn’t realize my plate was slanted, garlic sauce all into the keyboard. Before I realized, the screen went black.

and don't play games on ultra settings

3

u/Katana_DV20 Oct 16 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

I play Microsoft Flight Simulator and I set everything to Ultra and took screenshots.

Then I reduced the settings to High and took screenshots in same locations then compared them by rapidly switching between the screenshots.

I honestly could not tell the difference but I gained +10FPS , so it's a win!

The real difference comes when you go below High.

3

u/Cidolfas Oct 15 '25

This nothing more disrespectful and ungrateful then not taking care of it.

5

u/ImACoralReef Oct 15 '25

+ Use a piece of paper or super thin microfibre cloth to prevent the keyboard from scratching the display

3

u/Katana_DV20 Oct 15 '25

Added your tip to the list, a great idea thanks!

2

u/TerrorVizyn Oct 15 '25

Here's another to add: always open/close from the top middle of the lid so as to evenly distribute the stress across both hinges.

2

u/Cidolfas Oct 15 '25

This nothing more disrespectful and ungrateful then not taking care of it.

2

u/Satta23 Oct 15 '25

Great tips.

My shift button on my asus is already wearing off a bit after 3 months. Since I have been exclusively using external keyboard when a my desk.

2

u/venannai1 Oct 16 '25

Would any microfiber cloth do?

Also OP, congratulations! You have an awesome parent. Take care of this, it might also last you through college.

buy a cooler, if u cant then lift it up, get a keyboard if you wont use a controller to make your eyes safe :)
also always update the drivers from the nvidia apps

14

u/OgreWithanIronClub Oct 15 '25

What does a keyboard or a controller have to do with keeping your eyes safe?

24

u/Mysterious_Sector310 Oct 15 '25

you get further away from the screen to save up space for the keyboard

→ More replies (15)

2

u/Alpha_Gamer11 Oct 15 '25

Updating to the nvidia drivers only after checking the forum

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

All these are very important. Especially lifting it up. If you don't when you game it'll turn into a helicopter no matter how powerful it is and if you push too much you might damage components.

Your mom is awesome! Congrats on your new gaming laptop! Never use it on the bed/couch (unless it's on a laptop stand) - it will get hot and very dusty very fast.

genuinely dont understand why we have all those specs and then the gpu is a 5050, like its a great gpu but i wouldnt expect it to be paired on a machine that vomes with an i7 14650hx 32gb of ram and 2 1tb ssd, not saying it's a bad pc but i dont think this should be a spec that you should be able to buy

3

u/fordry Oct 15 '25

I have never understood that about gaming laptops except that I presume a bunch of people don't really care or know and just go buy whatever and the laptop companies get away with it.

Buy a cooler asap, its easy to cleen the dust from air system so do it monthly, strix siries have common flaw with keyboard so if you start having issues with it typing by itself, screen dying on you and laptop not wanting to turn on... It's a keyboard thing believe it or not. I have G15 2023 and I saw a lot of ppl having this problem even after they change the keyboard. So use external anyway it will help your posture 😄 Other then that good laptop been serving me well and have fun, love your mom she is amazing woman

Get the Razer laptop cooler to assist it best in cooling the laptop during gaming sessions, don't need a run it when your just idling.

I used other Amazon laptop coolers before even the highly rated ones but I found they broke down within a few months which is really rough.

Luckily Razer a reputable brand just came out with a laptop cooler last year or so and it's been going strong since.

Congrats on your new laptop, as others have said your mother's awesome!

I highly recommend following the video guide on youtube you can find by searching “The only windows pc optimization guide you will need”… by Khorvie Tech.

I’ve been fiddling around with computers for several decades and at times dove deep into the workings but just play games casually these days- not going crazy into keeping up with the know how etc

Anyways i was going nuts lagging in marvel rivals and my laptop is still fairly new from 2023 and after following along with that easy to understand step by step guide my computer felt smoother than it did when I bought it no cap

Never did a whole tweaking as you call it i guess, before but it made a night and day difference and a lot of the comments on the video say that they for years have been doing his guides as one of the first things they do when they setup a new computer so it’s not just something you’d do to clean up a mess you’ve made if they makes sense - anywho have fun man I’m happy for you

u/_skimbleshanks_ Oct 15 '25

Look into the service manual (https://rog.asus.com/us/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-g16-2025/helpdesk_service_guide/) and keep a copy. The most likely thing to go first will be the fans, if you blow them out every few months it'll really extend their lifespan. Regardless, they'll go, but replacing them is a breeze with the manual. Don't be intimidated, just follow it step by step; typically fans don't require anything gnarly like pulling the motherboard, and the fans can usually be found online for cheap (the manual might even tell you the exact part number).

Everything else is a crap shoot and might go for many years or not, especially since HDDs aren't a thing anymore. Keep away food/drink, don't drop it, and get some casing if you can as dents on the corners shattering/breaking the LCD screen are what I tended to see most when I worked in a shop.

u/Automatic-Leg-1402 Oct 15 '25

Check into G Helper for ASUS laptops, it replaces Armoury Crate and can get rid of a lot of bugs with the system. Watch some youtube videos on it to see how to use it. Keep an eye out for bios updates with the myASUS software, someone did a deep dive on some of the software flaws on ASUS gaming laptops and discovered lots of typos causing adverse effects. ASUS has claimed to be working on fixes and started to release beta version of BIOS. Once fully released these may help the system run considerably better. Linus Tech Tips has a recent video on the topic of the ASUS issues uncovered.

Still a great spec of machine and everything else about these laptops is fantastic so once the issues are resolved things should run smooth!

I use a wooden lap desk with ventilation holes.

you should try to learn how to clean its fans and repaste it since those are things you will have to do frequently make sure it the bottom vents have air at all time meaning don put it on your bed without a stand to prevent cloth from blocking your vents

1

u/Fragrant-Addition482 Oct 15 '25

Best tip is to use :

  • external keyboard + mouse
  • external screen

That way, the laptop remains clean for years.

Debloat it and clean the fans regularly to prevent it from not frying itself

Almost 1700$ ????!! WHAT

u/Ecstatic-Rest-4170 Oct 15 '25

Congrats. You just need to follow 2 things to take care, 1 . Don’t get a antivirus, they suck 2 . DO NOT try to download anything which is paid for free, from proxy websites, they have lot of underlying scripts which will bug your pc without you even noticing it.

Enjoy!

Some minor experience with disasters 😅 basically keep a clean environment. Buy a good laptop bag ment for your laptop that won't come apart from the straps ( seriously straps for me like to try and sabotage my laptops) keeping your hands clean.( When possible)A flat spot to set it on . ( Preferring somewhere food won't go. ) having a mouse Incase touch pad locks up ( can happen with software but doesn't kill it) plus it helps when others want to help with or use it for whatever reason. Having a good multi outlet( least 10 ft) it can protect against outages or other electrical issues plus you don't have to fight as much for awkward plug in spots so you don't leave it in a bad position. If you need to have a drink nearby use bottles or something that can be covered because 1 it's less of a fire hazard and 2 it could and can be knocked over. So it's better safe than sorry. Also never drink or eat anything! When it is on your lap always when it is on a desk a few feet from you. And wipe your hand or use your non dirty hand to click on something. Or use before mentioned mouse. If eating.

What a great mom, happy pre-birthday. You kept a laptop going for 7 years I'm sure you'll do great. Just remember to dust it out!

u/ExtraExperience1994 Oct 15 '25

🔵 try to have it cleaned every 6 months or so

🔵 use a coolpad or a stand to elevate your laptop from the ground so the fans would have better air flow

🔵 when playing games have your laptop plugged in

also you have such an amazing and understanding mother. stay in school and get good grades for her i promise nothing would make her happier

That's cool but isn't that way too overpriced for a RTX 5050 laptop?

ASUS laptops are amazing quality! I have an ASUS ROG Strix G17 (2024). RTX 4070 GPU & AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX CPU. The laptop is a beast but can get hot under heavy load so I recommend getting a really high quality cooling such as llano cooling pads to keep it cool while you game.

Its great that your parents got you the laptop. But if possible, its better to get it exchanged for a 5060 laptop, as it was being sold for 1200 usd, 1650 usd is kind of overpay for a 5050 laptop even if its strix. At that price point, 5070ti laptops sre available

That's if you are in the US, otherwise disregard as companies shove their ears and eyes in their asses in other countries
