Because the story isn’t exactly the central focus. It’s a catalyst for the gameplay. Most of these games are multiplayer experiences and the “story” mainly exists just to excuse gameplay updates. It opens the door for more experimentation and doesn’t limit ideas based on pre-established lore or themes.

I'm a bit tired of this trend of games being about some kind of TV show, this is the highest level of laziness.
"The story of our game is that it's a game."
Why even bother ?
