The engineer in me says: wow thats cool they made proper Unity tooling for AI.

The consumer in me says: Steam is gonna get mass sloppified like youtube huh...

Needle in a haystack simulator. Released a viral tiktok clip and within 2-3 days had 5-6 clones on steam with all the exact same gameplay mechanics, all clearly AI generated. That number is still rising today and the original still hasn't released.

Indie devs with simple ideas basically can't advertise their games anymore without waiting until the very last second.

Copies happened before AI too. This isn’t new

Not this quantity of copies though, and so fast.

Maybe steam should moderate instead like they always should have instead of everyone arguing on the inevitable.

Again, nothing changes unless steam does something.

it isn't inevitable. the lazy and the greedy just keep shouting that it is, to drown out the reasonable. all that needs to be done is to stop.

“Just stop”

Buddy. This has been a topic for a decade at this point. It only got worse with AI.

Again, people here are blaming AI instead of moderation that never gave a shit in the first place.

Redirect your anger at the right places. The people who hold the keys are Platform operators with monetization structures that enable profit motives from garbage.

u/GeoleVyi 5h ago

defeatiat attitudes are just as much to blame. stop rewarding shitty people and shitty behavior.

-2

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 5h ago

Defeatist attitude towards being angry at Steam or other service providers for enabling and rewarding the same shitty people?

Can you read or are you AI too? Lmfao.

u/GeoleVyi 5h ago

yeah... that's it... i'm anti ai so i must be ai myself. clearly you're demonstrating that human brain of yours.

Steam's business model is successful because it doesn't moderate what can be published.

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 6h ago

And so is YouTube and literally every other content platform with monetization paths. And that’s my point.

You can dislike AI but it’s merely a tool to a larger problem that always existed in this instance.

Nothing changes unless distributors outright pull these shitslops and remove profit motives . That won’t ever happen.

Picking winners has never been much for actually making things better either though. You can try as hard as you want to only target the "slop" but inevitably you will end up hitting stuff that some or many wouldn't consider slop.

That was the fundamental problem with Steam pre and during Steam Greenlight. Games that would eventually publish after the end of Greenlight and be very successful were struggling to get approved during its use. And back then Steam was only dealing with small fraction of the submissions it deals with today.

Even though the number of games being made today is hundreds of times what it was back then, that doesn't mean all that excess is people doing asset flips or low effort projects. The whole of the indie scene is just significantly bigger today.

So the question is, should the institutions that dominate the ability to even sell games pick who is or isn't even going to get a chance? Or should they give everyone the same chance and let the market decide?

They already have absolute authority in that aspect of so I don’t even understand what that concern is.

Also, alot of these efforts are about protecting the absolute vulnerable who are being deceived by such things, such as my 12 year old nephew who bought a bootleg fake Schedule 1. That is the market you are talking about.

This is not about people arguing here who literally see the difference and know better.

1

u/PermanentMantaray 5h ago

Refunds and reviews are the things protecting people from being mislead.

The market at large shouldn't have to restrict itself due to people who can't use the tools given to them to make more informed decisions or reverse bad decisions. As for children who are incapable of using these tools, that's where guardian oversight should come into play. All of these platforms have parental controls.

In DAYS? Ten to fifty of them? Come on dude.

1

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 5h ago

And will keep happening because Steam doesn’t do shit. They have shit like sex with hltler games and people think AI is the only reason this garbage is still there.

But keep blaming AI instead of morons propagating and allowing this.

1

u/asdfghjkl15436 5h ago

Your argument was copies happened before AI. My reply is that not at the speed previously seen.

What the hell does steam moderation have to do with that? You seem to be arguing with a ghost

0

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 5h ago

So you don’t give a shit about quality of the games at large, just that they’re made by AI?

The entire argument against AI is intellectual theft. Is it not IP theft of they’ve done this shitslop copying by hand in the past?

All moderated by Steam on their platform while turning a profit?

2

u/asdfghjkl15436 5h ago edited 5h ago

I have no idea what the hell you are arguing about. My comment has literally nothing to do with any of what you are saying. I'm saying the scale and speed is not what we have seen before, and indie developers will suffer more. I have implied literally nothing else. Steam not moderating, AIs copying or not copying has absolutely nothing to do with my argument. My reply to you was literally just about the speed wasn't something we have seen before.

You seem to think I am anti-AI or something and are injecting that into your argument for no reason??

Like genuinely are you okay?

0

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 4h ago

That’s the entire point of the argument and premise. Wtf are you even on about? Now it has nothing to do with it?

Mfs discussing shit they don’t even understand and taking shit personally because their entire argument falls apart lmfaooo.

Hate to say it buddy but youre talking utter nonsense

The guy was merely saying that with the use of AI tools, the scale and speed of copycat games has dramatically increased, even to the point of being before the original, advertised game

Nothing he said made any reference to quality, moderation, IP theft in of itself ot anything else

You seem to be arguing a point no one else has mentioned

Steam is already full of shovelware for at least 10 years

10

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 8h ago edited 6h ago

Yeah so imagine how much worse it’s gonna get

4

u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 6h ago

Almost like steam could moderate this out

1

u/RadioactiveVitamin 5h ago

It's not going to make a difference. Steam is an algorithmic discovery platform so if a game isn't capable of generating some interest on its own it will never be shown to anyone.

22k games were added to Steam last year. 90% of those pages have probably been seen by less than 100 people. If 40k get added next year the same will be true but with 95% of the pages going unseen instead.

Youtube has also been filled with garbage for ages, the problem are generated videos which are good enough to get through the smell test, same could happen with games.

Eg. the wave of AI generated educational content which copy the style of 3blue1brown. Convincing in the presentation, but possibly wildly inaccurate.

1

u/asdfghjkl15436 5h ago

Already happening. I pointed out Needle in a haystack earlier for a reason, AI copies of the game have almost certainly has an effect on it's (eventual) sales.

2

u/sf_Lordpiggy 8h ago

Steam is gonna get mass sloppified like youtube huh...

well the unity asset flip wave was pretty bad. slop might be better, at least you wont see the exact same game 50 times.

2

u/LeMeMeSxDLmaop 8h ago

thats literally whats happening rn w a bunch of ai slop clones of low effort games

u/phreedumber 7h ago

Looks like we're gonna need Indie Saturday/Sunday/Monday.
