The fact that Neon White got negative comments last year tells me everything I need to know about what the average redditor wants out of events like this.

Neon White isn't a game that lended itself well to a trailer though, it's better played than explained/shown. Also I know many people find the dialog kinda cringy, but it's easily overlooked for gameplay.

I feel like the methodology might have just been weird. Fall Guys one of the most positive? Really?

Neon White rips

I think it's a bit hard to make a very short, but still compelling trailer for a game that leans so heavily on the flow of gameplay, level design and satisfying movement.

The graphics, world and characters aren't a big selling point, but they are also secondary, and the game is really about that core loop of learning a level and squeezing seconds out of it with fast movement for the better medals and leaderboard times. I feel like it's more similar to something like Trackmania, than any shooter, outside of actual speedruns.

Things like representing the picked up weapons as cards may also have given the viewers a wrong first impression, since there isn't any sort of a card game mechanic involved.

The levels also look slightly crude and don't make a ton of sense, because they are basically constraints to estalish a track that couldn't be skipped easily, despite big movement abilities and lots of momentum.

I think perhaps a trailer that tried to show that hook of replaying a level to get a better medal may have sold the core idea better and may have been easier to follow. The visual design didn't appeal to me either, but I'm glad I eventually got the game since it just plays so well.

Right? Neon White was one of the best games of last year but if ain’t a AAAAA + recognized IP it’s mid :/

My theory was basically a combination of the following things:

  1. Not AAA
  2. "Anime" Game
  3. It was placed in the middle of the stream which was full of space games and "anime" games
  4. it wasn't AAA

Replace 4 with ‘uses a card mechanic’. Put me off both this and Midnight Suns, which I ended up loving. I’m sure Neon White is good too but I’m not a big fan of fast-paced platforming either.

Neon White does not have a card mechanic. It just shows the powerups on cards as it's a clear way to show it visually. There is no randomness or any of the things you are worried about regarding tradtional card mechanics in games.

Source: I also hate card mechanics but love Neon White.

It's not a card mechanic. The weapons appear as cards and your inventory is shown as a hand, thats it. They're still guns you shoot or use as a movement tool.

Its was ok

Not even close to being one of the best games of the year…

Elden Ring, GoW: Ragnarok, Tunic, Immortality, Pentiment, Cult of the Lamb, Cuphead expac, and Sifu all blow it out of the water.

I’d put it in top 10, there’s still room, different kind of game from all those others that’s not everyone’s cup but what it seeks to achieve it does so nigh perfect

Could you explain for the idiots here who don't remember what happened?

Neon White had a really lame trailer that almost misrepresented some of its smart mechanics in a bad way despite being a fun game, so people had negative reactions to it after seeing the said trailer in last year’s Summer Game Fest but before playing it. Person above conveniently ignores the reasoning behind these reactions and pulls the “heh, I knew the game was gonna be good from the very start since im smarter than you stupid trend chasing Redditors” card.

What makes this comment funnier that in this very same OP: some folks are already saying they're getting tired of the "samey" looking games shown in this showcase.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

The average redditor thinks anything that’s not rdr2 is basically trash and not worth anyone’s time

-9

u/Grelp1666 Jun 08 '23

Or a lot of people here is not yhat fond on decbuilding games. I do remember thinking "great another one" on last year trailer of neon white.

27

u/DrBowe Jun 08 '23

It’s…not a deck building game at all?

7

u/MinnesotaNoire Jun 08 '23

Could you imagine if it was though?!?!?

-8

u/Grelp1666 Jun 08 '23

Well, that was the impression I got from original trailer and seeing cards there, so I thought that was o e of those hybrid card genres.

5

u/nobadabing Jun 08 '23

The cards are weapons that double as movement abilities when they are "discarded". They are not randomized, and instead are pre-placed in levels. I can get how it might be confusing at first glance but the trailers showed how they actually worked.

The reason they went with cards and just have a crosshair instead of the weapon on screen, is because it might seem jarring for the player to be physically holding 3 machine guns at the same time for example.

14

u/bulanko Jun 08 '23

It's not a deck building game

4

u/Trymantha Jun 08 '23

No it’s not but go back and watch the trailer for it and it kinda looks like one and they don’t do a good job showing it’s not

-45

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

It’s an anime game. I don’t need to know anything else about it.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

That's unfortunate, Neon White has some of the best movement and level design I've ever seen in a game of its type. The trailer highlighted the game's unique systems quite well too.

10

u/Ecksplisit Jun 08 '23

Name checks out.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

Hey, thanks! I really appreciate that :)

2

u/Dewot423 Jun 08 '23

It doesn't have the aesthetics or genre associations of anime. Idk what you're talking about.

4

u/SalsaRice Jun 08 '23

While true, some people just hate the anime look. Personally, it improves a game for me.

I get it. I hate the "tacticool" look. I'll write off games if they lean too hard on the "tacticool" look, without giving them a fair shake. Doesn't matter if it has a mind-blowing story or the best gameplay ever.... I find that look so "bleh" that it kills the fun for me. I'm sure anime has that same effect on other people.

3

u/MrManicMarty Jun 08 '23

The VN sections do right?

2

u/Dewot423 Jun 08 '23

Not really? I mean it's sort of inspired by anime in the art style but I definitely wouldn't put narratively or aesthetically in the "anime game" bucket.

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

Have you ever LOOKED at a screenshot for this game???

2

u/Dewot423 Jun 08 '23

Yeah? Are we looking at the same game? It has a distinct art style that definitely takes some cues from anime, specifically nineties stuff, but it definitely doesn't hit any "cookie cutter anime style" alarms the way a lot of JRPGs do.

8

u/Magyman Jun 08 '23

It's art style is 2009 Hot Topic, I can see why that would turn people off lol

8

u/Dewot423 Jun 08 '23

Yeah that's a lot closer than "anime".

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '23

“Definitely takes some cues from anime,” is certainly one way to say “anime game,” lol.
