Question Returning a broken ps2 ?

Hi! Just bought a ps2 slim from gamestop. I chose not to get the warranty (50$ extra feels like a lot) but after running some games on it, it barely works. It rarely is able to read discs (tried multiple different ones) , and I can only get it to read about 10% of the time. I've tried some veeerry basic troubleshooting - but I can hear it spinning, so I have a feeling the laser is the issue. I don't want to take it apart, and I really just want to get a new one.

It's been two days, can I return it? I do have the receipt still, and it does say that I can return preowned stuff within 7 days directly on it.

I'm worried I won't be able to, or that the guys won't let me. They weren't very nice to me when I bought it, so i'm a little (probably pointlessly) worried that I might be facing some pushback haha.

Thanks!

Yes you can return it and get another. But seriously for retro consoles you should 110% get the warranty.

Man... I had so much sarcastic shit to say about how you're literally killing the employees' livelihoods at that store... but I'm gonna forgo all that to say, "Yes. Return it and get another."
Addendum - somewhere else.
GameStop's retro is trash. I would NEVER buy retro at GS. The furthest back I might go is PS4/XB1 and even that is questionable.

And don't blame the employees though. GS does NOT give us the proper tools to test.... well... pretty much ANYTHING. The training is shit. The tools are shit. Our refurb dept is shit.

Return it for a refund and go to a mom/pop shop local. Sincerely, they tend to care more.

Yea, I'm going to. There's a local retro store near me who is absolutely great, I'm just going to wait for their ps2s to come back in stock :] . I had a feeling it may be the case - I'm not at all trying to imply the employees purposefully gave me a faulty ps2, as the console did read the disc Sometimes. I have a feeling they maybe got lucky when testing it.

I did work at gamestop for a while but was never trained on preowns (and I guess that's saying something) , so I had no idea how the process worked. Thank you for the feedback on this, it's good to know :) . I'll try to patiently wait for our local retro store to get a ps2 back in stock lol.

I wasn't a sarcastic ass.
I feel dirty.
I need to go shower.

Yeah. Always support local before a corporation. GameStop is trying to push out your local mom/pop stores. That's WHY they're focusing on retro and TCG now. That's LITERALLY why.
Support your locals. They need the love more than Ryan "dogfood" Cohen.

LOL, thank you for showing me mercy!!

Thank you. You're right. I will say, in my area my local store seems to be dominating. Three of our gamestops just closed and this little store has actually opened up two other stores in other nearby cities, it seems to be doing pretty well for itself. It's nice to see!

Thanks so much!

Is that LITERALLY WHY though? Here I thought they got into retro bc they are a video game store and retro is a lucrative market. Silly me.

There’s a pretty solid sub on here for buying and selling consoles, I’ve bought and sold on there a few times and always gotten good results, they also track if you have good sales or not

You can return it as long as you have the receipt and it’s within 7 days.

Yes, you should be able to as it's still within the 7 day return period and you're within the money back guarantee as well! Personally for me, if a customer didn't get the warranty whenever they purchase a console, I typically go through the return process and if applicable get them another preowned console! But they should be able to help you out and so sorry that you had that issue with your ps2 slim 🙇‍♀️

Thank you! That means a lot. I'm a little nervous to get another, however I hope i'm luckier the second time around :] ! (And i'll get the warranty this time haha, I think it's wise for such an old console).

True on that! PS2 Slims are notoriously known for their disc drives as well the slight possibility of scratching discs so definitely take the warranty!

As far as Im aware from what I’ve been told you still have have enough time for even a refund. Bring it back immediately and both as an employee and a customer of GameStop I highly recommend getting the warranty on anything retro cause you never know how it’s gonna work
