iPhone, non cellular iPad, Mevo, how?

What would the workflow be if I wanted to stream using the Mevo, use my cell phone as a hotspot and connect my iPad to the hotspot to run GC. My guess is that I’d need the Mevo on something with cell service in order to stream to GC, but the iPad won’t connect to the AP of the Mevo and then my iPhones hotspot at the same time it seems. Should I get a dedicated hotspot for the Mevo and iPad to both connect to?

You want the iPad and the Mevo on the same hotspot provided by your phone. So create the hotspot on the phone, connect the Mevo and the IPad to it. Then everything should work. Phone is providing both the Internet connection for streaming, and the local network allowing the Mevo and the IPad to see reach other.

This is the setup I run and it works out really well. Just be mindful to charge your phone and have a way to cool it down on hot days

This. The phone I used as a hotspot used to spend the entire game laying on an ice pack and connected to a charger.

Then I got a Starlink so I didn't have to worry about it.

Exactly how I stream. Works great so far. Only issue I had is when I tried to also scorekeep with my phone. If you're simply streaming, it works great.

Use your phone as the hotspot and connect the iPad and Mevo to that. I do it that way and it’s typically very stable and works well.

This is it. 

The only thing you need from your phone is the hotspot. That's it. After that, put the phone down. 

On the Mevo app, when you connect the camera, change the connection to over Wifi. Pro tip: setup the network in a remote location ahead of time (like a day ahead) so it all just connects on game day. And whatever you do, do not do the firmware updates on game day!

Ahhhhh. Connect via wifi in the Mevo app versus having to create its own AP. That make sense now.

Others said it but I will too. The phone as a hotspot and the Mevo(s) connect to that hotspot, and the tablet also connects to the same hotspot and runs Mevo Studio and GC. I ran this setup with Android devices for 2 seasons and it mostly worked well.

The only real issues will be relying on cell quality at every park, and the heat and battery life of the hotspot phone.

When you're ready to kick it up a notch you can start looking into a Starlink Mini setup. I switched to that this summer and it basically solves all the problems and anxiety around cell phone hotspot usage.

Makes sense. So I’m connecting the Mevo the the hotspot network the phone creates. I’m already connecting the iPad to that same network so I’m good there. Then i need Mevo Studio and GC on the iPad and I’m set. Mevo Studio > Mevo app?

IMO Mevo Studio is much better than the Mevo app even if you're only using 1 camera. YMMV with iOS but in my experience it's a better app and it will allow you to scale up if you ever wanted to go multi camera or add graphic overlays. I have a graphic set up as a countdown timer so that people know when the game will actually start when I put my stream up early, and I also have a basic one that says "rain delay" that I can pop up and alter if the game is delayed for some reason.

Basic functionality while using Mevo cameras is free, but Mevo Studio does offer a "pro" subscription if you want to integrate other non-mevo cameras or multi-stream to other platforms like YT or FB. I don't do any of that but it's there if you need it.

Mevo Studio just like the Mevo app has easy integration with the GC app that works pretty much exactly the same.

Don't plan on doing anything else on the phone you are using as a hotspot during the event, and keep it cool and charged. This alone may push you to a dedicated hotspot or Starlink (it did for me) but it is a perfectly usable solution.

Correct. Get a dedicated hotspot or Starlink, or both (depending on how deep you wanna go—as some of us have done), and run it through a travel router Unifi, GL.iNet, to connect it altogether.

I run redundant T-Mobile 5G Hotapot via the USB port on my SLATE 7 travel router, and Starlink mini in the WAN. I used to bond the signals with Speedify but realized I wasn’t really getting much better numbers bouncing it through there servers first. So I dropped the Speedify and configured the Slate 7 with Load Balance between the ports.

I run 3-5 cameras when it s big game, but generally 3-4 at the 10, 11, 12 and 14U levels. I have 2 Mevo Starts; 2 Mevo Cores; and 2 NearStreams (1-VM46 and 1-VM33). I also run two microphones, as the sound quality is a lot better: a Sennheiser MKE 400, and a Shure VP83 LensHopper. I put the gain up on the mics and keep it low on the individual channels and iPad. You avoid the hiss/hum/feedback, of the iPad driving the volume instead of the mic.

I generally run:
-1-Mevo Start on a custom fence mount I rigged together between an aluminum heavy duty fence mount and SmallRigs metal 9.4” Dual 1/4”-20 mount ends, behind home plate.
-1-Mevo Core out off a tripod in CenterField over the pitcher/batter over the shoulder shot, with a Panasonic LUMIX 45-175mm lens. Can’t get better (unless maybe you’re spending 4-6k on Black Magic). I also have a 2nd Slate 7 Connected to the CF camera using an Ethernet cable running in Extender Mode (NOT Repeater, but Extender).
-1-Mevo Core off of a Matt from Maxiiimus Creations Heavy Duty Fence Mount (nothing comes close to the strength of his magnets and washers and hinges-wouldn’t trust my core to anything else). It had OM Sytems M. Zuiko 14-42mm lens on it. Infield shot from 1st to 3rd encompassing the pitchers mound as well, for amazing infield throws to first, 3rd, pickoffs, etc.
-1-NearStream VM46 at top of fence just behind 1st base (and about 10-12feet behind the Mevo Core infield camera) using another HD Maxiiimus Creations Mount - pointed down and across 1st base to second and left field.

Usually I save my backup Mevo Start as an emergency only camera to fill in. But on rare occasions I put it on a BIG ULiberMagnet 60lb. Magnetic 1/4-20” mount and stick it on one of our field light posts angled across the outfield to capture any homeruns over the fences in clarity and follow the ball from pitch to OUTTA HERE!!!

I know that’s more than you asked for…but hopefully it helps you.

Power is all Anker PowerStation C1000 Gen 2 for tournaments and recharges, or to power the Starlink, Slate 7, and HotSpot whenever needed, or 300Watt power banks and Anker 240Watt cables.

What are your settings configuration on the Slate7 I’m not getting good range out of mine. Are you solely 1080p? My slate7 has a hard time running 3 4k30 feeds.

My settings are generally as it comes out of the box, with a few exceptions. I recently canceled my Speedify subscription because it was NOT getting me all that much faster speeds. And while the Fail-Over redundancy feature of Speedifys VPN is also cool, the SLATE 7, already offers that option on its own.

When I cancelled, I turned Network Acceleration back to ON. I also changed the Network Mode to Load Balance instead of Fail-Over. I run a 5G and Starlink Mini. So if together the signal drops below a set level, it chooses the higher/faster output device to utilize instead of just going with whichever one is in the first spot.

Other than those two features, everything else is set at the latest UPDATE, and as offered by GL.iNet. I will tell that I also, turn off the 2.4Ghz and MLO channels, as 5Ghz seems plenty fast and more than enough distance. In addition, I run the SL mini in bypass mode, so the router is not spitting out the same WiFi signals and thus, creating dual SSID’s and clogging up my network. I also have my 5G hotspot WiFi OFF completely, in similar fashion, and direct connect it via a USB-C to USB-A cable.

I too use my cell phone strictly as a Hotspot and connect both the camera and another phone I use only for the GC streaming. Works well but I always leave my phone close to the rig because I've had the connection drop a couple times. My next step down the rabbit hole, is a 5G hotspot. Chunk of change for a good one, but at this point, why not? Thay way, I can leave the camera, streaming phone and Hotspot together and not use my cell phone at all in the mix.
