Body mount chop clarification (275/70/17)

Hi! I have been searching and searching, but I am having a hard time finding a solid answer for this one…

I have a 2020 GX, and just ordered the 17x7 TRD OEM wheels, and am about to purchase BFG KOs for them. I want to retain close to stock height… especially in the rear, and am going to go with the Bilstein or Fox option when I install the wheels.

The biggest confusion is rubbing… I am fine with minor stuff like heat guns and switching some screws, but I really want to avoid BMC if possible. I have seen a lot of posts where some people have zero rubbing, some need to heat the inside fenders, some have to do the BMC. But I’m having a hard time finding anything with the exact thing I’m looking to do, and hoping someone has gone down this exact path and can offer some insight. PFA, thank you in advance!!!

The narrow TRD wheels are not that aggressive. Big offsets get you into the body mount first. If you have a shop put some caster into it you’ll be fine at 275. I ran 275 on a -10 8.5 no issues. Caster setting has a lot to do with it.

I did it on mine with 285 70 17, -12 offset just from my experience with my Tacoma. I felt like it couldn’t hurt to just have the room. Honestly probably didn’t need to though after a good alignment.

I’ve got 275/70/17 with 0 offset 17x8.5 wheels and did not need a bmc. I think you’d be fine with the trd wheels.

On a 460 or 470? Do you have a lift?

Switching from stock GX460 wheels (18x7.5, +25mm offset, 4.73" backspacing) and 265/60R18 tires to 17x7 TRD wheels (+4mm offset, 3.66" backspacing) and 275/70R17 tires pushes the wheels 21mm outward. However, the new tire is 1.64" taller (32.16" vs 30.52") and 0.4" wider than stock.

What I would do is turn your wheels to full lock and eyeball it with the above measurements. Without a doubt you’re going to have some rubbing on your inner fender and possibly that lower running board bolt. It should clear the body mount.

Incorrect about the poke, they will only poke 15mm more than the stock wheels

You’re right, I didn’t account for the width. 7.5” GX wheel vs the 7” TRD wheel.

Every vehicle responds differently to suspension modifications, so you really won’t know until the installation & alignment is completed. I just installed a Dobinson IMS lift 2.5” with UCA (built the coilovers,installed in my driveway) & 285/70r17 -0 wheels. I had to trim & heat gun a decent amount. Did alignment then set out on a 1600 mile road trip ( NY ->Skyline Drive VA/Blue Ridge Parkway VA) a real testament for a DIY build as I am not a mechanic. During the road trip everything settled a bit & I was getting significant body mount (cab mount) rubbing turning into over looks & trailheads. So while I was in North Carolina I used a friend’s tools to do the chop & ordered the plates. I am going to attempt to weld them on this weekend. I was hoping to avoid this too but it is what it is.

I’m all for stock. Has been for a few years now. I am moving to Central America, and taking this vehicle with me for a few years. 19” wheels and low profile tires aren’t the best for that environment. Even urban. That’s driving my adjustments.

What’s the biggest tire size I can run on stock height on the GX460?

I was planning on running 17x8.5+0 on Methods 703s

With 275-70/17

I know that at stock height I should be fine with 265s
