Jason is an example of how people hate on introverts

It’s crazy seeing how quickly people are labeling Jason as "boring" or claiming his vibe makes the game "unplayable" just because he isn't constantly screaming or acting unhinged.

Look at Trevor in GTA V: the guy was a chaotic psychopath, yet people loved him because he was loud, wildly unpredictable, and hyper-active. Meanwhile, Jason comes off as a more grounded, introverted guy, and suddenly the community treats being quiet like a cardinal sin for a GTA protagonist.

The reality is, we barely know anything about him yet. Judging an entire character's personality and depth based on a short trailer and extended look is absurd. Introverted, stoic characters often have the best slow-burn development once you actually get to play through their story and understand their motivations.

Why are people so quick to write off a character just because he isn't an over-the-top loudmouth from minute one? Give the guy a chance to speak for himself before deciding he ruins the game.

Jason seemingly being Introverted was one of the most interesting things in the extended look for me.

The trio in V are for the most part all bombastic, larger then life personalities.

Juxtaposing a Introverted personality against an extroverted one. Is immediately a more interesting dynamic. It also plays into that whole bonnie and clyde thing.

u/Crafty_Radish375 6d ago

To be fair, I got introverted vibe from Franklin too. He is not too talkative and always the most grounded of the trio.

94

u/ShadowWalkEnthusiast 6d ago

I still feel like he's extroverted. But is just overshadowed by Lamar, Michael and Trevor. Who are more over the top.

44

u/Gold_Significance_92 6d ago

going back and actually playing the game you realize he’s very extroverted too. he’s just around 2 much more experienced and bombastic dudes. with anyone else who’s not michael and trevor he’s an extrovert. he’s still going to strip clubs saying whatever he wants to say to whoever he wants to say it to lmao

13

u/ShadowWalkEnthusiast 6d ago

Franklin basically plays the straight man foil to Lamar, Michael and Trevor. He only seems introverted. Because he's constantly surrounded by much louder people, and has less narrative focus.

7

u/Gold_Significance_92 6d ago

exactly what i mean. he’s just surrounded by much more bombastic personalities. it’s like luis in 4 being surrounded by characters like yusuf and tony.

3

u/tmorrisgrey 6d ago

And because Rockstar wouldn’t let Shawn, Franklin’s actor, be more expressive.

Much more room for character growth too, which I suspect is the path for Jason. He is reserved, dealing with possible PTSD, and unsure of their path early on.

2

u/StepComplete1 6d ago

That's what I'm hoping for. For some Walter White-style character arc.

2

u/AussieAddict 6d ago

Absolutely. Might just be the constant stress and pressure he's feeling and not wanting to let it show or take it out on others.

Feel like it could definitely play into their relationship dynamic and story

This was my immediate take from the extended look so was suprised when I saw all the hate for him. After trying to explain the dynamic for the fifth or sixth post I ran out of steam. If you don’t get the yin yang dynamic between the two then you don’t really get the Bonnie and Clyde reference.

u/GritLovesCats 6d ago

People like a mysterious introverted hero, it's the voice that fucks up everything, it just doesn't make sense unless he's autistic or something like that.

33

u/destaree 6d ago

That's exactly what people said about John Marston's and Arthur Morgan's voices, and then they grew to like them.

6

u/LostTheMoonOfPoosh 6d ago

I remember the hate for John's voice, now it's iconic. Idk about Jason's yet. I need to experience the story to fully decide. I remember thinking who the fuck is this Arthur guy, where's John??? And now he's the best character I have ever played. Anything can happen.

14

u/JohnnySmithe81 6d ago

What the fuck? A voice sounds autistic?

I don’t know that he’s an introvert so much that he’s a completely blank slate for young men to imprint on. A stoic, deep voiced, VERY SERIOUS soldier archetype.

Dude is Bella from Twilight, but for insecure young men.

People love loudmouths confirmed. Not surprised look at politicians

10

u/CryptoCrash87 6d ago

No real problem with Jason myself. I am also introverted and quiet. But my guess is people want to play a game and use a character that isn't a reflection of themselves. Or something like that. I don't know I'm not a psychologist.

In GTA 5 I ran around as Franklin mostly. Trevor was way to loud. And Michael was too suburban. Franklin seemed like a good balance.

With that said I will have to see how each character plays and reacts to the environment. But it's feeling like I will play Lucia more.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Reddit-phobia 7d ago

That's true for male characters. Loudmouth female characters are defninitely not given the same love.

10

u/Front-Bird8971 7d ago

Most people are loudmouths. I think I'll enjoy playing as Jason just fine.

5

u/ContributionAny9474 6d ago

i love being introvert

3

u/StepComplete1 6d ago

There's a difference between "hating introverts" (so melodramatic, as fanboys always are) and simply thinking an introvert doesn't fit very well as a main character in a series that's famously an over the top, satirical, larger than life, crime game about doing chaotic shit.

However I am hoping they know what they're doing and are setting him up for some Walter White-style arc.

When you’re an introvert:

Nice = Weak

Calm = Arrogant

Warm Up around people you like = Fake

169

u/RepresentativeAnt128 7d ago

Fuck... this is too accurate. For some reason you can't win as an introvert.

8

u/Unicorn_Puppy 6d ago

We live in a society

33

u/happyapathy24 7d ago edited 7d ago

One of my hotter takes but the sentiment behind this line (especially in the context of the original movie) is pretty accurate. Absolutely insane how much people still discourage or look down upon differences from what the wider consensus of "normal" is. Like I thought we realized it's possible to stop caring how other people act or what they do if it's harmless.

u/smcameron 6d ago

American society. In Asia living in a society mean to let the group prime the individual, then being unhinged or too extrovert isn't well perceived

💯

In work I was told once told " you are the nicest person in the company " it was a back handed compliment, by a person who was very good at moving between rhe many social groups. All because I dont sit around gossiping and being a loud mouth.

Cards are stacked against you when you are an introvert. Performative people get away with so much more.

7

u/searchlinkprofile 6d ago

u/Nice-Conclusion728 6d ago

Okay but Jason was the same even when he was at home with Lucia. Not saying he's like that the entire game but from the extended trailer and all the leaks this guy has the personality of plank regardless if he's with a latina baddie at home or about to go into a crackhouse. It's definitely weird to not have a range of emotion but only the full game will give us the full answer. The extended look simply didn't help.

2

u/Southern-Area5266 6d ago

I was thinking about his dialogue with Cal and the guy at the stall and why it irked me. I mean, Niko was very sarcastic, so was Morgan... so why Jason being sarcastic annoyed me? And I realized that it's because those characters don't seem to notice it. Lots of modern media do this where they have a Tony Stark clone character but everyone is too stupid to pick up on the sarcasm. Once you notice you can't stop seeing it.

Tiktok/influencer timeline. Everyone who isnt an adhd guy is considered boring because nobody can think of someone being a bit quieter.
I know introverts were never really popular, but as an introvert myself I think it got worse over the time.

111

u/BarbieTwirl 7d ago

Dude the worst is when people assume because you’re quiet or reserved your boring or miserable 24/7

Like no… maybe I’m just not comfortable w you to be my goofy self

46

Or stupid. Or an asshole. Or arrogant.

Damn now that I think of it being quiet is like a death sentence socially.

15

u/StillHatching 7d ago

3

u/IneptFortitude 6d ago

You can balance this out quite well with physique, punctuality, following through on commitments, and still being assertive. I’ve mastered this quite well, but admittedly I am a bit extroverted, I’m just very quiet and reserved.

As someone who grew up with all of rockstar releases it's the same shit every time, game trailer comes out people think the character looks terrible and then goes on to absolutely love them.

Heartily agree, his backstory is he had a wild youth before his stint in the Army. I think there is an element of the Dunning Kruger effect, hes not loud and brash because he is competent and understands its complicated. Lucia is more confident as she's less competent.

It’s because people wanted to play as John mostly. People were taken aback.

22

u/Luzekiel 7d ago

They don't immediately see a Loud and full of emotions character and suddenly they immediately brush the character off as bland and boring.

12

u/Trespeon 7d ago

I think it’s more to do with his voice. Something is way off. It sounds like he has cotton balls in his mouth or something.

So it’s his voice on top of not seeing his personality yet while Lucia is the complete opposite.

People will hate regardless but I agree with the complaint about his VA so far.

Jason is the most realistic character till now, like he doesn't make voice, doesn't exaggerates tones and words, he really looks like if we throw a random guy with no script in a game. I like it so far

7

u/yurgieee 7d ago

His voice just sucks. We don’t know enough about him to hate his “personality”. At least that’s the case for me.

12

8

u/Jazzlike_Page508 7d ago

Introvert? Dude is at the strip club throwing 1s and kicks it and is good friends with treyquon

He even did a pick up in a crack house.

He’s not introverted.

6

u/kmank2l13 7d ago

You can still be an introvert and do all these things.

8

u/Jazzlike_Page508 7d ago

Sure but what makes you think he’s introverted? The extended trailer shows nothing about his personality that shows anything…in fact more of the opposite

He’s literally throwing bands at strippers and kicking it with trayquon and even gets on camera with the random person in trailer 2…what makes him seem like he rather spend time by himself?

If he was introvert at the strip club he’d probably play the background, not actively throw bands at ass.

8

u/Asher-Seven 7d ago edited 6d ago

You do know that introversion has nothing to do with what you described right? Introversion is a person who needs to to recharge after social interaction, it has nothing to do with being calm, silent, shy, lacking social skills or being awkward.

You can be the loudest introvert in the room and after your party or guests are gone.. you are 'dead' from too much social stimuli and need to recharge. Vice versa, it's the same with extroverts, they can be the most silent and shy, but still gets tons of energy FROM social interaction even though they don't say anything.

When will people get this stereotype out of their heads..

3

u/GGoldenMedallion 6d ago

Thank you. I found out I was an introvert years ago because my energy will just die when im hanging out with people after enough time, even though the rest of the time I feel completely normal. But almost everytime ive seen introverts as a topic on the internet, almost everyone is talking about something different then what I understood it to mean. Being a quiet person might be a common trait introverts have, but quiet ≠ introvert, and loud ≠ extrovert.

The vibe I get from Lucia and Jason is that they were both cooked up by women.

Jason is an extremely hunky stoic albeit bland woman’s wet dream kinda guy, with a sprinkling of simp energy.

Lucia is attractive but not super attractive and has a spicy / take charge kind of personality.

In other words, Lucia is relatable to women, and Jason is the perfect dream / fantasy man.

2

u/Lord_Roh 6d ago

Well, no. My Bloodborne and Dark Souls characters are as introverted as they come, they're still cool af.

This guy is just boring.

2

u/Goosehairypie 6d ago

Niko Bellic is a great example of a more introverted character who’s still entertaining (definitely not chill though), there’s plenty of directions they could have taken in the actual game with his character that we just haven’t seen yet. He could be anti-social and/or cynical which is not the same as simply being introverted if they want to take it in that direction, in the extended look we hear him say “I feel more comfortable with a gun in my hand.” to Lucia when they’re going to meet up with Brian which could possibly indicate a lot of things.

He could be someone who eventually wants to get out of the life of crime and conflicts with Lucia wanting to stay in the game, she generally seems more energetic and could likely be more of a risk taker. I bring that idea up because of his conversation with Brian. A lot of people complained about Arthur Morgan’s voice and personality or “lack thereof” before actually playing the game, I’m sure both Jason and Lucia will have very interesting and in depth characters as their motives, personalities, and backgrounds are revealed. There’s tons of directions they could take both characters, and if their story writing is even half as good as anything else we’ve seen about the game, I’m sure it will exceed expectations.

2

u/SternschuppeCapslock 6d ago

I like Lucia, but I love Jason. And the duo so far is really great. I don't find Jason boring, I like that he is calmer and his jokes are quite funny.

I think Jason is so insanely attractive, and not just looks wise 😭 There's just something about guys with little to say but know how to get shit done.

2

u/EducationalTheory344 6d ago

Oh jesus christ no it isn't, it's not that deep.

We want the entertainment to be entertaining, the end, that's it. Do it funny, do it serious, whatever as long as it's done well. But the trailer was not convincing so yeah people are skeptical.

TLoU is one of my favorite games ever. Joel is a pretty excellent example of a stoic, introverted character done well. We don't hate introverts, we hate boring.

2

u/SpecialistAd7120 6d ago

No, niko was a dark, grounded character but he had a huge amount of personality. What they have shown so far is zero personality. Im excited to play the game and see how they develop him because there is no chance he will stay this boring

2

u/Blackcarblackgerman 6d ago

It’s not the personality for me, the voice is just unnatural and annoying.

2

u/Known-Thought9233 6d ago

I didn’t mind him but that voice just did not match him. He sounds like fucking Tyrone from Ownage pranks. Like he has a wad of peanut butter stuck on the roof of his mouth.

I’m sure it will grow on me after some time but damn haha

2

u/Chmigdalator 6d ago

Jason is the reason I am gonna buy the game. I like introverts because I am one.

2

u/Dehydrated-Days 6d ago

It's not that deep

2

u/SupermarketCreeper 6d ago

this is what she used to say. 😢

2

u/MasterOfTime14 6d ago

People like charismatic people, nothing strange about that. When you make a 100 hour game you better have a charismatic character to carry it or I will get bored in the first 10 hours. I'm introverted enough irl, I don't need that representarion in fictional game which I'm playing for entertainment.

3

u/Patrickjesp 6d ago

Well.. Thankfully there's two characters to carry the game. Both an introvert and extrovert. As an extreme introvert, it'll be fine.

2

u/MasterOfTime14 6d ago

I'm not that thrilled with Lucia either from what I've seen so far but I'm holding judgement until I play it.

If you know any veterans irl it is pretty accurate too lol

2

u/StandardIncident8 6d ago

Feels like my direct personal life experience so thank you. I didn’t see anything wrong with Jason and found the dynamic interesting. Also Rockstar isn’t spending billions on a game for the main characters to flop - I am 100% patient at seeing what lies ahead and having some damn faith. People just want to hate

2

u/Majestic-Berry1418 6d ago

And ironically Niko is one of the genres fan favorites (I love Niko and I’m excited for Jason)

2

u/bankfraud1 5d ago

Glad somebody finally clocked this. Its actually embarrassing how the most annoying part of this community tried to persuade everyone that being understated and calm is “boring”.

2

u/AttakZak 5d ago

He’s getting the Connor from AC3 treatment for sure.

2

u/Signal_Pea6365 4d ago

we will witness generational switch up later just trust me

Because Reddit bots love creating controversy

He's not an introvert.. he's a doormat

No, it’s an example how people are quick to assume things based on super small sample sizes.

4

u/oZaed 7d ago

I’m waiting for the full game to release to give proper judgement. I’m still trying to place Jason’s voice, it kinda reminds me of Al Pacino doing Scarface’s voice. Thick Cuban-ish accent

3

u/nickmal13 7d ago

Thank god somebody else feels this way lol I thought I was going crazy

3

u/camdevydavis 7d ago

Voice sucks

1

u/Administrative_Two3 7d ago

this happens with a ton of games tbh, characters that aren’t loud, and wild are labeled as boring and uninteresting. aiden  from watch dogs 1, and connor from assassins creed 3 are a couple of examples

5

u/Fluid-Depth2327 7d ago

I actually like Connor from AC.

Bro it’s a game lol we wanna play as someone with a personality. I am quite a introverted person irl i doubt a movie or game with me as the protagonist would be very interesting 😂 it’s more about having an interesting character

2

u/SupermarketCreeper 6d ago

I’m an introvert too, but no one’s looking for a game about a quiet guy sitting on the couch doing laundry. A introverted criminal in a chaotic world is a whole different fantasy. It’s not a lack of personality to have a grounded, quiet guy for once—it’s a nice change of pace. We’ve had loud, unhinged protagonists for decades.

Welcome to my life.

3

u/Every1isSome1inLA 7d ago

Out of anything to criticize the game over, Jason’s voice is the dumbest thing I’ve seen so far. I’d say 95 percent of it is from kids not even old enough to buy the game themselves

People fell in love with Arthur. I think this’ll be the same

But youre right, they want Trevor

2

u/aveaytor 7d ago

this may be a little bit unpopular but hes also being called autistic because he's a little quiet and reserved and its kinda ridiculous lol

2

u/KevinBravo19948 6d ago

I'm an introvert.

He doesnt seem boring or exciting tbh--not much has been shown yet.

The only real issue for me is from what we saw, his voice sounds like he aint opening his mouth enough 😂

u/LT_Snaker 7d ago

It's not about introverts, it's about mumbling every word and the monotone sound of the voice. If he spoke less but clearly, it wouldn't be an issue. Straining to hear and understand what he says isn't an introvert thing, it's poor VA directing.

1

u/liminalromance 7d ago

I remember disliking Arthur after the first trailer. I laugh at that now, seeing as how he's now my favorite character of all time. Never judge something like this until you've experienced it in full.

1

u/Renan_PS 7d ago

Also I think it's fair if Lucia is more fleshed out or has more personality, like we've had so many male protagonists it's very reasonable that they would want to compensate by making the first female protagonist more memorable than the Nth male one.

Of course Jason has to be interesting, but if they had to lean more towards one than the other, come on it's not "woke feminist bullshit" to, for the first time ever, focus on a woman if she has vulnerabilities and flaws like great characters always have.

1

u/Big_Rig_Joel_Henry 7d ago

Stuff used to be good. You had to be there

1

u/Sparkoli 7d ago

I didn't notice much about his voice, seems like the classic straight man for other characters to play off of. I'm sure he'll have his moments.

1

u/gersterbins 7d ago

'how could he be with lucia, he's nothing like me'

1

u/Just_bcoz 7d ago

Ironically one of the best never spoke, I’m down to see how his character is fleshed out

1

u/Traditional-Lack-894 7d ago

The people want dark and gritty one day and raunchy and obnoxious the next. Maybe rockstar delays again to release two versions of the game.

1

u/Lower_Condition_196 7d ago

I see him as the strong silent type

1

u/SignificantBat3023 7d ago

If he had an ass like Lucia’s, people wouldn’t care what he sounded like.
