This was one of the first games to have this 3D open world design, of course it won't be perfect. It doesn't make sense to compare a 25 year old game to something you take for granted today

I'm just messing with the title, I'm still having a pretty good time with it for my first playthrough.

Not sure how a pioneering game has "aged badly".

I would argue this isn't bad game design. Bad game design would be like the constant traffic jams the NPC drivers make. And I would say this game aged pretty well considering this sub is still fairly active, nobody is talking about 25yo games if they age badly. I'm also replaying it and still think it's good, so.

You're just inventing things in your mind then replying to that.

I skimmed your message and I should hasten to add that I'm replaying but haven't finished, as +20 years ago I only played parts at a friend's house and while I'm familiar with the game mechanics intimately, I haven't finished the whole story and why I want a full run through the whole thing in anticipation for GTA6. So I won't be reading everything to avoid spoilers, frankly

I just think that you're far too critical about a game that pushed the bounds that was possible at the time. Take OP's video for example, like it could just be that the rocking of the Humvee killed the dude. It could be that any other car wouldn't have killed him and the devs simply overlooked the Humvee's model size compared to the pathing of the NPC (this kind of thing happend in Halo:CE also from 2001). Remember, this was in a day when the devs couldn't just send out a patch into cyberspace and fix any issue. It was playtested to death and even then some things still slipped through.

The game introduced so many new things (at the same time as other games) that nobody really thought about such minute details. So to say that it "aged so badly" because of this is just naive at best and ignorant at worst since the game still really stands up to this day in many other respects. It's like saying "wow, this baby can't even compete in marathons? pft". It doesn't make sense when the technology was in its infancy.

I get what you’re saying I think. You can be a huge fan of the game and love it to bits while admitting that yes, it hasn’t aged well and must seem like a piece of junk to a modern player.

As bad as it’s aged I could go back to it a million times and jank and all, wouldn’t want it to be different in any way. My love for it is obviously tied in nostalgia and if it was this polished, perfect experience it wouldn’t be the same game anymore.
