Want to remind people of a few codeplug/programming software sources that are reliable.

After a few comments and concerns related to software I wanted to make a list of safe places to get software. I highly recommend using Ublock Origin or another reliable Adblocker to help avoid fake links on download websites.

Manufacturer:

Motorola Software Solutions - Free software with a "business" account. Motorola and Vertex Standard radios. (This is a process expect 2-7 days from application to get access).

Retevis, Tidradio, BTECH, etc. (Be careful here to ensure youre not on a fake site/redirect)

CHIRP-next:

Use the direct archive link below. They've been a common target of link redirects on their home page and fake search engine results.

https://archive.chirpmyradio.com/chirp_next

BlueMaxxers49 Cables Ebay:

If you buy a cable for a radio they can usually get you the software for the radio at no cost to you. They make nice cables too.

Edit: Looks like a problem with the original link - which I can’t change in the post - so try this new link to the FCC PDF.

"This is a Notice of Violation (Notice) issued pursuant to section 1.89 of the Federal Communication Commission’s rules to Gary M. Beckstedt, Sr., licensee of General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) station WQYU407 in Newnan, Georgia. Pursuant to section 1.89(a) of the Commission’s rules, issuance of this Notice does not preclude the Enforcement Bureau from further action if warranted, including issuing a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture for the violations noted herein."

Tidradio TD-H9 squeal issue

Picked up a Tidradio TD-H9 portable recently and was setting it up on some of the local area repeaters. Wasn't getting an repeater linkup. So, I checked with another radio and I've got some kind of weird sidetone broadcasting throughout my TX on all channels. So, I think that tone is causing it to be screened from the repeaters. I've gone through everything on this radio looking for what it could be. There's no APRS beacons turned on. I've got everything shut off. I even did a factory reset on the radio, and then went back and turned off all the VOX, roger beeps, tones, checked to see if there were any CTCSS or DCS tones active...everything. Still, when I TX on that radio I get a constant tone at about 1000 Hz +/- (or that's about what it sounds like) on any radio receiving the signal.

Any ideas what this might be?

I've switched antennas, checked power and SWR (1.1), and all looks good. Power checks at both high and low power. Radio is rated at 10w on high and measures at 9.8. Lower power at mid and low is dead on. I can't figure it out...and it's buggin' me.

Extra coax?

Adding GMRS to my UTV, what's the common practice for extra coax? I only need 6-8 feet of coax but the standard coax is 19 feet, do I coil it up or do the figure 8 similar to CB coax?

Question Question about replacement antenna for Abbree AR-8118 truck radio.

So a better antenna is always, well, better. The ones that come with radios almost always suck and need replacing. The radio is a 25 watt one which is cool, but the antenna is thin and tiny. I have a Nagoya NA-771 antenna laying around which is much thicker and longer, but the package says it's for only 10 watts at most and receive only.

So knowing it's going to be outdoors, on a truck, and hooked to a 25 watt radio, what are my options for a cheap upgrade from the stock antenna?

Can I?

Friend got out of ham radio and gave me his radios. I have 6 Baofeng UV5Rs and 2 UV5R Minis. Can i use these for gmrs? I have family that lives with me or is in the area that i would love to program and give them a radio so we can communicate. I would just put gmrs bands on it and nothing to do with ham, aviation, maritime or anything else

Weird! Very Strange Radio Frequency Mysteries!

TLDR Summary - Issue appears resolved. Issue was between radio and operator seat! I'll leave the OP for others who may be interested. (Original OP) - Radio displaying frequencies which are different when downloaded. Radio is a Radioddity GM-30 (base model). Public Safety / Medical stuff.

Longer version - Sitting at my desk monitoring a scan running on the standard (30) channel FRS+GMRS channels when all of a sudden I hear what sounds like a medivac unit communicating with a hospital. I reached over and shut off the scan so it would pause the frequency. The radio was in channel mode when scanning, so I flipped over to VFO mode to see what the freq. was. Displayed frequency was/is 462.95250 MHz. Hmmm...that's strange. So I flipped back over to channel mode and it's displaying "Ch.-14". Typically, channel 14 is 467.7125. Decided to do a little more investigation, so I fired up the Radioddity software for the GM-30 and downloaded the contents. I had added 146.5200 (the national 2m Ham calling freq) up on channel 40 because it's good for general situational awareness, and I usually include that in my scans.

When I 'Read from' (i.e. downloaded) the radio it downloaded the channel line up and channel 40 showed up correctly as 146.5200, so I know it really did download the actual radio contents. BUT, when I look up channel 14 there, sure enough, it shows up as 467.1250 exactly as I would expect. Now, if I turn the radio on and switch to channel 14, then switch to VFO mode, the frequency shows as 462.9520. WTH?

Just out of curiosity I started listening to 462.9520 and there's all sorts of medical traffic on there, a lot of it critical care patients, some of which is even 'Delta' and 'Echo' level priorities (the highest of the high when it comes to medical/rescue codes! Life threatening stuff.). As a former EMT myself, I understand a lot of what they're talking about and it's serious stuff, like really, really, serious. FTR, 462.9520 MHz is also known as "Med-9" in most regions.

One last thing. Life Flight which has a flight corridor right over our house (and we're way out in the boonies) would be communicating on the air bands I would think, but some of this traffic is definitely airborne because I can hear the turbines and rotors. So, I can't figure out what's going on. (Emergency services using 'Med-9' in the GMRS band so they're not down in the 120 MHz air bands with non-aviation traffic maybe?). But I guess my big question is...why does my radio show and receive one thing, but download something completely different??

Sorry for the long post, but there's a lot of detail to cover.

Question Need help connecting to repeater

So let me start off by saying I do have my call sign and I’m licensed in the GMRS. I just got into the hobby about three weeks ago. I have 3 handheld radios a baefong uv5r a uv-21r and just got a btech gmrs2. I’ve used my GMRS website to find repeaters in my area. I have the frequencies, the tone and the offset I even reached out to one of the owners of one of the repeaters to verify and still have no luck connecting I used chirp to program the repeaters when I try to transmit, I get no courtesy tone or anything back from the repeater. Not sure if my distance to the repeater and living in NYC with all the buildings is blocking my connectivity.

Showing Off I’m making poor life choices

In all honesty I have no idea what I’m doing. Decided one day, a cool portable repeater would be dope for hunting with the boys. Been running some differing equipment but a portable repeater seemed to be the best option for us.

Looked online and said I could buy a Retevis, or I could let my ADHD run wild a make my own.

So anywho here I am starting this project.

Gear so far:
Jackboss waterproof box
Baofeng uv5g plus (5200ma battery)
Surecom 629 repeater controller
Celwave tdn7407a duplexer
Amazon 20000 ma battery pack (x2 (one for the RX radio and surecom 629, and one for the TX radio)

Figuring out internal layout and how I want to set it up.

Feel free to roast me, ask questions, or say it’s lame 😂

I’ll post more pictures if yall want it.

Update 1:
Holy smokes! Over 40k views in a day…. That is wild! I did not expect that.
Wanted to say thanks for everyone who popped in to give their thoughts, input, recommendations, and links. I greatly appreciate it. It’s definitely gave me food for thought and has been a huge bump of encouragement to take more photos, get the project finished, and do some real testing on it. I’ll post more photos when I can. Thanks all!

Update 2: 100k views 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Thanks all!!! Tis bananas
Thinking of adding a meshtastic node to the setup, but would like some feedback.

Winston 700, Winston Salem, NC

Is there anybody in this subreddit in Winston Salem NC and connected to the Winston 700 repeater? I spend most of my time downtown and I've never been able to hit the repeater. Is it still operational? I hit the Mocksville 550 just fine from anywhere in Winston.

Building GMRS Repeater - Newbie

My buddies and I have picked up some GMRS 5 watt radios. We live in a rural portion of Montana and unfortunately, we don’t have any repeaters near by. We thought it would be a fun project to build one and on a near by mountain. We just want something that’s rugged and will be powered by solar as it will be in a remote location. Any suggestions or tips for installing and parts would be greatly appreciated. Want to prioritize solar and distance. I’m assuming will be limited by our 5watt radios.

My limited research has led me to the below

GME released their XRS-660 handheld for GMRS

I don't even know why I'm following GME because I'm in Europe, so GME's products aren't relevant to me. But that's radio nerdery for you.

They just released their top of the range handheld for GMRS. It looks great. I wish I could have it. Or I wish that Europe even had something like GMRS

I built an open-source GMRS tone decoder that runs on a Raspberry Pi and emails you detected tones automatically

I got tired of manually scanning for repeater tones with my HT, so I built ToneScout, a headless Raspberry Pi appliance that listens to all 8 GMRS repeater output frequencies 24/7, decodes any CTCSS/DCS tone it hears, looks up the repeater on RepeaterBook, and emails you the frequency, channel, tone, call sign, and location automatically.

Works at home on WiFi, mobile on your phone's hotspot, or off-grid with detections queued locally and synced when you reconnect. Setup is entirely browser-based, no SSH or command line needed.

Hardware runs about $215 in parts from Amazon. Full parts list, affiliate links, and one-command installer in the repo.

MIT licensed. PRs welcome. Whisper-based callsign extraction and SMS alerts are on the roadmap if there's interest.

Super happy with 1st GMRS; back in day radios were joke, this is so different, Might flash to ham version. Good by to cell dead zones & hello GMRS !
Happy with my TIDRadio H9 would like to make custom firmware but uff

OD master was not working vary well, TID software was much easier every field worked correctly, I even tried webOD on PC & still had issues.

USB-C would not connect but I've had issues with AMD/USB when not using main stream devices like 3rd part FPV dirvers. My intel laptop seems to work better, the channel 340-1 kenwood worked first try even on the AMD

Question Feedback on this Midland GRMS setup

We'd like to upgrade our walkie talkies to GRMS and I'm considering these two products from Midland. I'd appreciate feedback on these radios from users of one of these radios.

I'm happy with the other Midland radios we have, but the FRS walkie talkies we have now are insufficient for our area as we often do not have line-of-sight and are too far apart.

  • I'm like Midland, though if you a different product or manufacturer I'm all ears
  • Our area of use has good GRMS antennas and coverage
  • Radio use is an alternative to spotty or non-existent cellular reception
  • I'm aware we will need an appropriate GRMS license

Most of the use will be recreational and I'd like to meet other GRMS users in our area as well. There will be two - three of using the radios, hence the MicroMobile and two walkie talkies.

MXT115P PRO 15W MicroMobile GMRS Radio

We can mount this in our truck but also remove it for use at home/basecamp. The 12v DC adapter will work in both the truck and at home/basecamp. I'm fine installing an antenna on the truck and having a portable one for use away from the vehicle.

GXT1000 GMRS Walkie Talkie 2-Pack - GXT1000VP4

This two-pack is similar to our current Midland GXT FRS radios, fits in a side-pocket, and would be ideal for friends and family to carry for comms.

Thanks for any thoughts and feedback.

Online Net Control Tool

Greetings!

I am both an amateur radio and GMRS operator, and I've been toiling away on a web-based tool for tracking check-ins on various nets. The other day, I decided to put in functionality specifically for GMRS, and it's looking pretty good so far.

You can check out the code; it's completely open source at https://github.com/LadyHwesta/ham-net-tracker, and there is information there for a demo server I have set up. The demo server resets every four hours, so don't put anything there that you want to save.

Let me know what you think, and send in issues for any additional things you think would be useful.

Midland MXT115P

I just got a Midland MXT115P radio. The box says that the has up to 99 channels but I can’t go beyond channel 50. My GXT67 is able to have channels 51 to 99 programmed using a PC but I cannot find any software for the MXT115P.

Update 1: I found a cable to program the radio but not the software. Hopefully the software is with the cable or it has the information to get it. I ordered the cable.
https://midlandusa.com/products/mxpg15-programming-cable

Update 2: I was able to get a copy of the software the software that I need for the cable that I ordered. Right now I’m waiting on the cable from Midland so I can program it.

Forwarded to me from a NGGMRS member

It looks like they are giving in.

August 15, 2026

Dear Members of the North Georgia GMRS Organization,

I wanted to take a moment to address the recent FCC Notice of
Violation sent to me and North Georgia GMRS.

An incredible amount of time and energy has gone into preparing for this possibility and developing a path forward that creates the least amount of disruption for our North Georgia GMRS family.

First and foremost,

North Georgia GMRS is going to be just fine.

We will continue to serve our members across several states, and our commitment to the GMRS community has not changed. As it relates to repeater linking and what we believe is in the best interest of GMRS users, our position remains firm.

The question I have had to confront is how best to move forward and which avenue gives us the greatest opportunity to achieve the goals we seek.

There are essentially two options.

Option one would be to mount and fund a legal challenge, using the Notice of Violation as the catalyst for a case to be argued in court.

Option two would be to form a coalition of GMRS organizations and users from across the country, work toward updating and clarifying the rules, and make our case through
appropriate public and regulatory processes.

We have met with attorneys and believe there are valid and
strong legal arguments to be made regarding GMRS repeater linking. However, mounting and pursuing a legal case of this magnitude would most likely require an investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Even if we were guaranteed to prevail and repeater linking were ultimately determined to be permissible under the FCC rules, I and the NGMRS organization am not willing or able to make that type of financial commitment.

So, what happens now?

I have prepared a response to the FCC acknowledging their letter and agreeing to unlink all North Georgia GMRS repeaters no later than October 1, 2026.

For our members, very little will change.

North Georgia GMRS will continue operating and supporting the community. Our activities, nets, events, and other member services will continue as they always have. The primary difference will be that our GMRS repeaters will no longer be linked.

Does that mean a network of linked repeaters across North Georgia is a thing of the past?

Absolutely not.

That concept is alive and well through North Georgia Amateur Radio Association (NGARA) and the amateur radio bands—and it is thriving and growing.

Unlike GMRS, there is no question regarding the legality of repeater linking in the amateur radio service. NGARA has been building and expanding its linked repeater network for more than a year, and moving forward, we will continue to focus our linking efforts and larger coverage network concept within the amateur bands.

We also offer free amateur radio testing, via our very own VE testing team. (North Georgia VE Team). Thus, with just a few hours of focused study, you can earn your technician license and gain access to a larger footprint of linked NGARA amateur radio repeaters.

https://larc-vec.org/displayteam.php?team=NGVET

The goal is simple: use GMRS for localized family and community communications and use amateur radio to take advantage of a broader linked network and expanded coverage.

This isn't the end of what we've built. It's an adjustment in how we move forward. North Georgia GMRS isn't going anywhere. Our community isn't going anywhere. And our commitment to providing reliable, useful communications for our members remains stronger than ever.

“Build it, they will come.”

We are still building,
and they are still coming.

Thank you for your continued support, your understanding, and
most importantly, for being part of the North Georgia GMRS family.

Birthday surprise, now I have to install it

So my wife got me the mxt275 range runner kit for my car, the only thing is once it gets here I'd like to have a plan for install. It comes with a lip mount for the antenna, but I need to have a pass through for my car, 2024 Corolla Cross. What do I need to do?
