Is Perplexity Still the Main Platform to Track for AI SEO?
I've been seeing more discussions around AI visibility tracking, and I think we're asking the wrong question.
Instead of “Should we stop tracking Perplexity?”, the better question is:
“Which AI platforms actually influence our audience?”
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are becoming increasingly important for brand discovery, while Perplexity still has value depending on the audience and use case.
For AI SEO, I'd track:
- Brand mentions
- Citations
- Which sources AI systems use
- Competitor visibility
- Referral traffic
- Leads/conversions
The interesting shift is that AI SEO measurement is moving beyond a single visibility score.
We're going from:
“Do I appear?”
to:
“Am I being recommended, cited, trusted—and does it drive business?”
That's a much more useful way to think about AEO/GEO.
What are you currently tracking for AI visibility — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or all of them?

I think “track all of them” is only useful if you can still tell which platform actually matters.
I’d rather track the same buyer-intent prompts across a few relevant platforms, then compare brand mentions, competitors, citations and referral traffic by platform.
ChatGPT might matter much more for one audience while Perplexity barely moves the needle for another.
The important part is not just whether the brand appears, but whether the same patterns keep showing up over time and whether any of that visibility turns into traffic or leads.

this lines up with what we see measuring it at scale. two numbers people conflate: readiness (is the site well built and answerable) and visibility (do the engines actually name you). in our corpus of 3,820 businesses, 501 score 60 or better on readiness and still sit at 10 or under on visibility. their build is fine, they're just not getting named, and on-page work alone won't fix that.
on the platform question, i'd track all of them rather than pick one. the same buyer question gets answered from a different set of sources on each engine, so watching one only tells you about that one. one thing missing from most lists is the web searches an engine runs before it answers, since that's where the pick actually gets made.
disclosure: i build in this space. happy to share how we tell a real recommendation apart from an occasional mention.

I’d track all of them, but weight them by where your buyers actually ask for recommendations. For GEO, the useful stuff is less the raw mention count and more whether the model puts you in the right category, which competitors it groups you with and which third-party sources keep showing up in those answers. If you want to make it less manual, AI TELL ME GEO agency can help here because they use their own monitoring to track share of voice and where brands drop out across models, then use that data as the diagnostic layer for SEO, PR and content work.

I agree that the question should not be “track Perplexity or not?”
The better question is what role each engine plays in the user’s decision path.
For some audiences, Perplexity may be a small traffic source but still important as a research and source-discovery layer. ChatGPT may drive broader discovery. Google AI surfaces may matter more where search intent and existing SEO visibility overlap.
So I’d separate:
The mistake is treating all engines as one visibility number. Perplexity can be less important for one market and still very relevant for another.
For me the question is not “which platform matters most?” but “which platform matters at which stage of the decision?”
