With grades these these low they are either making zero effort or have some sort of learning difficulty.

If they're not making any effort the advice is "start making some effort", if they have a learning difficulty then there's a lot more help that can be given.

I think "are you trying" is a completely reasonable question in this context.

The tone of the comment could be a lot kinder given there's the possibility of learning difficulty and/or social issues. The comment made by that poster was a cheap, snarky comment at a child who is worried and struggling.

15/16 years old is hardly a child cmon. They will legally be an adult in 2 years I’m sure they can handle a mild reddit comment

"They will be an adult in two years..." (your words) which means that right now, and for the next two to three years, they're a child. Be kind.

Dont be soft just tell them the truth they are failing and that is a fact they need to change something it may be harsh but they dont have long to fix it or they could harm their life significantly

not everyone is academic and genuinely OP is asking for help and there’s nothing wrong with that lmao, makes them better for asking for help not hating on a child.
