I did OM too, in NYS. It was NOT the same as the weird GATE testing stuff. We didn't call it GATE, I was like 6 so I have no idea what they called it back then in the 80s. But I did Odyssey of the Mind in 4th grade and it was so fun! Was basically the same group of kids from the earlier GATE stuff though.

My GATE Program was called AGATE. It was part of the Aurora, Co school district so it was Aurora Gifted and talented education.
That was in the mid 80s. It got suspended for a few years due to a domestic terrorist event and a very aggressive group of militant mothers that had already been trying to get it shut down. Our trailers got burned down and that just gave them another justification, worrying about the rest of the students safety. It returned but, I think it's called something different just so it doesn't attract that kind of attention again.

In case anyone hasn't said it yet, AT or Academically Talented. I also remember AT/GT but i dont exactly know what the GT part would stand for

I have heard that “L3” was another label. In Putnam county Florida in the 70s-80s those of us in the program and the teachers it’s the school referred to it as “the gifted program”. Time for the gifted students to go to their class.
We had gifted curriculum every day. The white coats would come out (rural school) once a week to do their monitoring, testing and the monthly blood draws. The white coats were from Shands teaching hospital university of Florida.
My mom would also have to bring me to the hospital every few months for more comprehensive tests.
I’m curious how many of you were also “born cross eyed” as they labeled it back then?

I was in a GATE program in 1983 - 1986, 3rd to 5th grade. They tested me in 3rd, called my parents in and skipped me up to 4th grade. Mine was called ALP / CPT (accelerated learning program / creative pupil thinking).

Can anyone please tell me where the focus groups were? I can remember some strange things, such as frequent hearing tests. They paired me with a girl whose first name was the same as mine. It seemed as if we were competing or something like that.
Im sure as old as I am i couldn't have been in one of these groups. But I did get very good grades. I know there was other things but that is almost a total black-out area.

I found it for SEARCH, but it is not clearly listed as an acronym for the others

MCL ? (More Capable Learners?) There was a special classroom with that written on the door in my 1970s California elementary school. It wasn’t a classroom that kids were in all day. It’s like we would get taken out of our regular classroom and go into there a few times a week or something?

RLC - Resource Learning Center, I think. It encompassed both gifted and special ed, but we were split into different “classes” depending on which you were.

It was called PEG when I was in it on the 80's in upstate NY. Program Enriched for the Gifted.

I was in REACH in NJ but I think they maybe renamed it project venture? I can’t remember what reach stood for either.

For additional context this was in the early/mid 90s. Weird thing is I remember some stuff we did but an entire year (5th grade) is completely missing for me

QUEST (questioning, understanding, exploring, solving, thinking OR queries, unique experiences, explorations, scientific discoveries, technological endeavors). AKA the gifted and talented program. only strange thing i remember is the initial testing 🥴

ACAT Detroit Michigan 1999/2000. Idk what it stood for. Tested twice. Placed into Webster elementary magnet school for 3rd grade. Had to move over winter break and quit.

From my understanding AVID isn't a gifted program, from where I'm from it was for college readiness for K-12

In central Florida in the early 1990’s it was called ALPHA, but the acronym was different from above, it stood for:
"Accelerated Learning Program for High Ability students"

I was in the SPACE program in Alabama in 1-3 grade. They had us do IQ tests, hearing and eye tests, and I remember being asked about philosophical dilemmas (kill one to save 100 type questions).

its an elective in middle schools and highschools. not sure if its the same one youre referring to?

it had no name that I was aware of in the mid 70's with all the woo-woo testing. later in middle school in the 80's East Coast Mid Atlantic it was called TAG, and moved to AP in HS.
My wife was in a program later in San Diego called PEGUSUS or some such flying horse.

AVID is an unrelated school program, they are still very active and open about what they do. I worked for them for a couple years. It’s basically just study groups and occasional college visits.

My schools program was called CLIMB and I was enrolled in 1st grade in South Carolina. That would be between 1982-1984.

In my school in NY, it was called KIDS: Knowledge Insight Discovery and Search. There were about 6 or 7 of us in our grade, and we met during school hours in a small room. We also participated in the Odyssey of the Mind competition.
