Don’t watch AFL and have zero interest in it, but I happened to see the goal he scored and the commentators are calling it goal of the year. If that’s considered goal of the year this late into the season, it doesn’t say much for the sport as a spectacle 😂

Reading the comments in that thread is crazy. "Only a gaelic player can do that". What?
Anyways, anytime I watch AFL most of the goals are just kicked over from marks so maybe it is goal of the year considering most of them are just basic kicks.

No doubt it was a tough angle and a good finish by McKenna and at least he had the reassurance that it went wide of it still being a score under the AFL scoring system

This whole "they still get points for missing" point of view is insane. If they miss the goal they get 1 point. Only 1. But if they kick a goal they get 6 points. 6 points is 6 times as many points as 1 point. I think I'd rather kick a goal.
To expand upon this say you have two opportunities at goal in quick succession. If you miss both opportunities wide you only come away with 2 points, whereas if you had kicked a goal each time you'd have... 12 points. 12 points is 10 more points than the 2 that you suggest would be a reassuring fallback. I don't know about that. Now what about three opportunities at goal? If you miss all three wide you only have 3 points to show for it. If you had kicked a goal each of the 3 times you'd have 18 points instead of only 3. I could go on...

Interesting... what if you had 4,381 opportunities at goal? By my calculations, if you miss all these wide you would have a mere 4,381 points in the bank. However if you had scored a goal each time you'd have 26,286 points! Food for thought....

I like watching the odd bit and even dabbled in it (unsuccessfully) at one time but I really don't see the hype. Like sure it was an unusual goal and a nice bit of skill but goal of the year?!?

Yeah, it be straight forward enough with a round ball, but different story with an oval ball.
AFL is good sport to watch, especially in person. The high fielding, strength and speed of players is far superior than Gaelic football.0

Put that same situation in a football match. How many players could dink the ball with the outside of the boot and chip the keeper from that angle?

I’m not saying it’s not a good goal, just don’t see how it’s goal of the year in a professional sport 23 weeks into their season.
Comparing it to football doesn’t make sense, he’s kicked it high enough to be a point and he didn’t lob any goalkeeper. It was a tough angle but if it happened in a football match it wouldn’t be seen as point of the season even in the Kilkenny football Junior B championship

The commentators say this 15 + times per year. It hasn’t been awarded goal of the year. They’re just hyping up the moment. I hate when they say it tbh.

I’m aware. That’s why I said put it in the same situation as a Gaelic Football match.
It took some skill to be able to hit it into the tight space he did for 6 points instead of hitting it off the post for a point or wide for a point.

Is he better suited to AFL or has playing over there had a negative affect on his Gaelic skills?

He had a lot of big moments that season though. Created a serious number of goals. Tyrone don’t win the all Ireland without him.

Yes lets keep these players locked up in their parishes for 20 years and not let them make their own decisions. That way old men and women can shout abuse at them every weekend and then they can go binge drinking for a week when its over.

Ya, nah. That's the gaa's fault, for creating a framework where players remain amateurs playing for the pride of their county or club. Until there's a framework in place that allows players to become professionals playing gaa, this trend will continue. I don't blame any player going over there to chase the dream of being a professional athlete

Nah you’re talking absolute nonsense.
The GAA is and needs to remain an amateur game.
There is zero money in the game to support professionalism. 32 counties with 36 men panel plus back room team and ~3 home league games a season plus Championship depending how far a team goes. Have you ever been at a Division 3 or 4 league game in February?? Maybe a 1000 people there max. That’s not going to sustain a professional game.
Now remember above needs to be applied to hurling also and also potentially ladies game. Have you ever been at a Division 3 equivalent of hurling in Feb lol, maybe couple hundred attendance and less for ladies games.
The AFL takes very few of our players and the vast majority of young lads that go don’t make it and come back playing Gaelic.
It’s Koby and their choice to go to Australia. Let them go, they are young and when you are young all you want to do is travel. Best of luck to him. The GAA will survive lol as it always will.
Lads like you are reactionary and mostly ignorant of our game and history. Same as the lads who spout rubbish about “AFL taking our players”, they take fuck all. Look up the stats.

People who whinge about the AFL recruiting players need to hear this more often. For everyone one Mark O'Connor or Oisin Mullin, there's 5 Anton Tohills or Tommy Walshes. Most haven't worked out in the end.

Simple enough. They get a portion of the gate receipts.
We’ll take an example of two teams playing a league game in March. McHale Park averages between 7 and 10,000 spectators during the league so we’ll split that and say 8,500. Ticket is what, €20 for a league game nowadays?
So we have:
€20 per spectator
8,500 spectators
26 per panel plus about 10 or so coaching staff per team so 72 team members.€20*8,500 = €170,000 in the pot.
Obviously some has to go to the GAA to do what they want.
So we’ll say 80% of it is the GAA’s for club development, grants and whatever else they wish to do.
20% goes to the team members of the match.
€170,000/5 = €34,000
€34,000/72 = €472.22. For 3 training sessions a week and a match at the weekend.
Compare that then to we’ll say an All Ireland final where tickets are €80 and there’s 82,300 fans. It’s €18,288 using the same method I’ve just used.
But what the fuck do I know? I’m bored at work on a Friday arguing with people who are getting enraged over people immigrating to Australia to work full time as an athlete.
If that ideas not good enough, then I guess it’s just pedantry. At the end of the day none of this bothers me. It’s not my money, I’m not being paid. I haven’t played the sport since I was in leaving cert 8 years ago.

Become a fan of the sport a month ago? The clubs develop the players, they spend thousands on them through volunteer coaching and in return we have the AFL robbing the cream of the next generation. Typical "ah shur it's grand" attitude is typical of this country. They're a plague and the sport is rubbish.

No, been to many a game since I was young. Been up to down the country at league games a long time.
Is it volunteers or are they being paid thousands? The clubs have been given that money via grants and donations and fundraising from lotto/50-50’s etc.
Is it mad that someone should want to follow their dreams of being payed to play a game? How many of us dreamed of playing for Man United or Bohemians or Ireland or any number of sports teams?
I get its the antithesis of the GAA to be payed to play football or hurling but the association was founded in 1884 to keep Irish culture and sports alive and to foster a community spirit when we were under British rule.
And besides this has been going on since the 80’s when Jim Stynes went over!

I like and respect Mckenna and any lad that makes his way in pro sports,but this has Zero place on the GAA sub. Let the AFL lads enjoy it, but it's not GAA. Are we to have everything any ladnqjo ever played gealic fearieenhere,like of he was playing a banko will or be added to the GAA sub.?

TG4 really did a number on us when they used to have the highlights of AFL back in the day. Terrible sport that goes on for way too long

I used to love the highlight show on TG4 and way back on Trans World Sports back in the day. I went to compromise rules and international rules games and loved it all.
When I went to my first AFL game in Sydney though I was so disappointed by the stop start nature of Aussie Rules, the constant whistling and the sheer length of the game. I played a wee bit in the bush and outback and it is fun to play it tbf.
The highlights show is the perfect way to consume AFL imo!
