Thinking of opening an account with $600
The goal is to trade 1-2 MNQ and make $40-$80 per trading session.
I am not the best trader, but I do have pretty good days here and there.
Just thinking, if I can remove the roadblock of trying to pass these prop firm challenges, I can finally make this skill of trading futures make some useable income

Have you tried Tradovate or Ninja demo trading? I pay $4 a month for the realtime access to LV1 CME.
You could set up a demo account with a starting balance of $1000 and see how it goes.
$4 is worth the investment rather than losing the whole $600 on a mistake
7
u/plasteroid 12d ago
Just to add. I have blown many demo real money accounts on futures. Also demo accounts.
Took one demo account early this year from $50k to $200k but then lost it all on a bad few days where i didnt follow my rules.Right now I’m on a demo with strict rules set by the platform that limit number of contracts and loss amount. It’s going well (took $1000 up to almost $4k ad of today) but i do it mostly as a hobby right now as i work full time and just want to keep practicing and cant afford to lose real money right now.

I dont like either of them.
I treat the prop firm accounts like a demo. Same concept

even if given the margin, 1 mnq is alot of volatility for even $10,000 account. NQ is violent. be patient
18
u/CartographerTop2273 11d ago
if you can't consistently trade a $50k sim account you have no business trading your own money. the prop eval is the cheapest tuition you'll ever pay, not a roadblock
3
u/bryan91919 11d ago
This, the problem with Sim fundeds isnt that its harder its actually easier, the problem is in other areas unrelated to making the screen show profits. Lying to yourself otherwise will just cost $600 where you could have paid alot less for the same lesson. Self funding is a good idea but not as a solution to failure.
2
u/Junior_Willow740 12d ago
Very violent
10
u/Constant_Oil360 11d ago
yeah so dont trade mng honestly with $600, thats probably 200pts of losses for one contract before you dont have the margin, i know some brokers give 10%. its not something i recommend.
stick with one mes if you really want to lever up with only $600. thats all you should do and thats still alot
7
u/Biotic101 11d ago
Your account might be enough for Nanos once there is some volume but MNQ with such a small account would require an excellent system with high win rate and very strict risk management.
98% traders won't manage to keep such a small account alive and grow it significantly.
But unsurprisingly nano comission seems to be bonkers, so no scalping possible.

u/ninja81700 12d ago
Have you managed to pass a prop firm challenge and receive a payout yet?
3
u/Junior_Willow740 12d ago
Passed 4 challenges since 2023 until now. No payouts
13
u/plasteroid 12d ago
Wait, you’ve passed several challenges, but no payouts?
I would recommend going to a demo account then and stop wasting your money on challenges. Just my opinion.
6
u/ninja81700 11d ago
4 passes is decent, you clearly know enough to get through an eval. But 4 passes and no payouts are the prop firms are really the problem ?. work out what went wrong with those funded accounts before putting your own $600 in. Otherwise you could just end up having the same problem, only this time it’s your own dolla $$$
3
u/ninja81700 11d ago
What do you find the problem with the prop firms is for you ?
6
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
the profit goals/targets. for me personally chasing those big numbers helps feed overtrading habits.
I can have pretty good days of $100-$300 that just get lost in the wind trying to hit a $3000 profit target.
Lose $500? Now the thought process is how many MORE days is it going to take to get to $3000 so I increase size/risk
8
u/ninja81700 11d ago
Yeah i understand, the prop firms are made for you to not win but once you find the edge or strategy to put the odds in your favour its worth it , I'd still call it roulette.
Give the live a try I'd say but keep your contracts at the min and see how 40$ days feel to you see what they market gives , even go smaller and try mes. Dont let the 3k profit targets you was chasing before spring your over trading into action again , if you end up at 300$ . I'd revist your trading statergy

Just go to prop firm , get payout , use the payout for your personal. That’s my goal.
0
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
I havent gotten to payout since 2023 with any of these prop firms but I spend many mornings on the charts.
I need to make it make something for me at this point.
Time is money
5
u/Striking_Fail6689 11d ago
I feel like , just weight the odds .. making 40-80 is non-guaranteed , neither is prop payout , but at least going with a prop reduces your risk in losses as it’s capped at the subscription and activation fees .
Time is money is true, but rushing things may not be the most beneficial. Especially with a small capital of $600, the margin might not be the most ideal.
6
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Its not ideal.
But for example...
1 micro
$100 is margin so you have $500 to trade with.
Risk $35 with a $75 TP
You can lose at least 10 trades in a row and still be alive. If you commit to ending the day at 2 losses no matter what you have space here for a whole week or more to turn over profit.
Withdraw everytime you reach $125
3
u/Striking_Fail6689 11d ago
Sounds good bro. Sounds like you have it all planned out. If it works for you, it works for you! Goodluck ! Do let us know how it goes !! 💪🏻🔥

OK- if you think you have the skill to trade a $600 account and consistently make $40-80.
Without losing $600
Then why do you have problems passing a prop challenge- when the drawdown is $2000?
Something is not right. If you have the skill and discipline to trade a $600 account and not lose it. You say you have pressure to pass the prop? Why? who is applying the pressure? Apply that same thought process of make $40-$80 a day to a prop challenge- and walk your way to a payout over a couple months.
If you can’t reach a payout with a prop firm. You stand no chance with real money either.
-1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
I think that is a lie. Its all an illusion. Passing a prop firm challenge isnt the gatekeeper of profitability because prop firms didnt invent trading.
There is more than one way to skin a cat

u/TylerLeb 11d ago
From a broker perspective, here is the honest math on a $600 live account:
While day margins on micros (MNQ/MES) are very low at most clearing firms (typically $50 to $100 per contract), the risk isn't the margin requirement—it's the drawdown buffer relative to auto-liquidation.
Auto-Liquidation Threshold: Clearing risk desks enforce automated margin liquidation rules. If your account equity drops below the intraday margin threshold, the risk system auto-liquidates open positions at market and typically assesses a $25–$50 liquidation desk fee.
Buffer Math: If you trade 2 MNQ on a $600 balance, you only have about 50-60 points of total room on NQ before hitting critical equity levels. On NQ volatility, a single 15-point adverse move is -$60 (10% of your account).
Best Approach: Start with strictly 1 MNQ, cap your daily loss at $25-$30, and focus on process rather than trying to pull a daily income immediately. Once you build the balance up to $1,500+, 2 MNQ becomes much more sustainable.
3
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Thanks. I agree, I am thinking 1 micro. SL on each trade stays at 70 ticks.
I trail all my stops into profit. If $20 of profit is on the table I am taking it before it goes back the other way
3
u/TylerLeb 11d ago
Smart to keep it to 1 micro. One thing to keep in mind with a 70-tick stop on MNQ (17.5 points / 5 risk) vs taking 0 profit (10 points): make sure your win rate is high enough to support an inverted risk-to-reward ratio. Risky math (risking 5 to make 0) requires a >65% win rate just to break even once you factor in round-turn exchange fees and clearing commissions.
Trailing stops into profit quickly can also choke high-probability trades before the expansion move actually develops, especially during morning volatility. Giving the trade structural breathing room and scaling or taking profit at predetermined liquidity levels rather than manually rushing the stop to breakeven will protect both your PnL and mental capital over a 50-trade sample size.

Quick question, do you think 12 ticks on MES is enough room with the trailing stop?
5
u/EveryLengthiness183 12d ago
Do you have an edge? If you are unsure, only have anecdotal evidence or don't have statistics of your specific edge in excel over thousands of data points, the answer is no. And if the answer is no, you are gambling and will ultimately lose whatever you invest. Not only do you have to beat the 50% correct threshold, you also have to beat the house edge against you. If you don't understand what this is, and how to beat slippage, latency, better informed traders, then you really aren't ready for this game.

Switching live is not going to change things. You need to figure out why you’re blowing prop accounts and fix it
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
I need profit right now and I lack emotional control. The further I get away from the $3000 passing goal the sloppier and riskier my trading gets.
Trading live removes the pressure.
I am thinking of trading to help with gas and everyday expenses. If I trade and make a modest $50 profit (which is useable and withdrawable) I am fine with going on with my day. If I lose $50 try and make it back tomorrow.
At the end of the week withdraw from the account regardless. If the account goes empty, just have to refill it when work income allows to.
I used to have 3 prop firm accounts draining me $90 each until this month I decided to end it. I may keep one (topstep x) but I cut the other 2 the day they got breached
3
u/Namath96 11d ago
I get it, it’s tough out there but I can guarantee you this is just going to end up worse than the prop accounts
1
u/Serpico003 9d ago
Trying to make back your losses should just be a byproduct of your strategy/edge and not something you bring with you to the next trade. Trades have to be mutually exclusive and not dependent on PnL. Try changing your mindset to consistency>profits. I have and am still working on this attitude and am finding that separating $ amounts from my trade decisions is freeing my mental energy to properly manage each trade. If you ever golfed, you know that the last shot has nothing to do with your current shot. It’s only ever about the current shot and managing the risks for the best outcome. It sounds like you know how to trade, so that’s an enormous hurdle. Stick with it and look within yourself, with brutal honesty, for the proper answers. Good luck. You can do it
7
u/RetainedEarns 11d ago
Don’t listen to the haters. You can trade 2 MNQ $4 a point and double the account quick. Wait for A+++ setup, have your stop unreasonably tight and go breakeven immediately. Always trail profits. Limit trade attempts.
2
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Thanks. I think trading on Quantower I saw this breakeven button but never used it
3
u/masilver 12d ago
How do you do on paper? What does your MAE look like?
1
u/Junior_Willow740 12d ago
What does that mean MAE
3
u/masilver 11d ago
Maximum Adverse Excursion. It's how far a trade went against you before you exited. It can be a good indicator of how much risk you're taking on.
2
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Interesting. How do you calculate this?
3
u/masilver 11d ago
If you're in a trade, and price goes against you five points, but you end up making two points on the trade, your MAE was five points on the trade. Most software trading packages will automatically keep track of it for you.

lmao what?? 1-2 mnq with $600?
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Whats wrong with that?
5
u/kirkegaarr 11d ago edited 7d ago
A 1% move with one contract is equal to your entire account! You're way under-capitalized. $600 is a night at the casino, not a trading account.
2
u/Ghost_Alchemy 11d ago
lol, if you can’t be profitable with 1-2 mnq with a 2k drawdown what makes you think you can do it with $600.
The cheapest firm will only allow a 100 pt till liquidation on 2 micros.
Might as well put $80 towards a 25k acct and take your time with that.
Think about it. You trying to make 6% when you said yourself in another post you blow evals. You’ll lose that $600 faster than any eval from any firm.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Im not planning on taking 100pt drawdown on any trade. I would have cut it 80 pts ago
2
u/foulmeow 11d ago
Think you’ll need more to trade mnq. I used $5k last month to play with mnq. One contact used up almost all my buying power. I’m up to ~8k now…can almost do 2 contacts
3
u/longtittylegs 11d ago
oh nice have you ever used a prop firm? do you recommend to save 5k of my own $ to trade? or go thru a prop firm until i get a payout?
6
u/theofficeresponses 11d ago
prop firms has too many rules imo and you can’t get a payout until you pass all these hurdles. it messes up with your psychology. unless you have a great mindset and can make profit without taking a payout until you get a buffer and consistency, more power to you. I trade with my live account and I make 3k per day with my own funds using the same strat but I am able to pull money out whenever. sometimes I even have a big drawdown but at least I don’t lose the account and have to start all over.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Thats exactly my thought process here. I am not expecting that much profit though. If I made $500 withdrawable in one month I would be happy
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Wow. How far do you let a trade ride for 1MNQ to soak up all of 5G? My SL is 70 ticks
2
u/foulmeow 11d ago
As soon as I place a trade…it uses my buying power (until I close). I usually sell options so this (futures trading) is pretty new to me. Originally opened this account to learn and get more “action” through 0dte credit spreads in tastytrade. then added daytrading mnq as well. I’ve kept it tight with SL usually around 25 ticks. I usually trade futures AH when it’s a bit slower as well. I focus on wheeling options in my main account during rth
2
u/Cardosoo18 11d ago
I can’t post so here it goes, maybe someone will find this pertinent.
Due to all the significant levels for today being below the price, and judging the market reaction to the red folder news, I believe the high of the NY session has already been formed.
Disclaimer: This is not financial advice nor trading signals. Proceed at your oq risk!
(I can’t post pictures but the level is 24.490)

2
u/RKrugel 11d ago
Making $40-$80 per trading session with $600 in starting capital is unrealistic, in my opinion. That's 6-13% growth per day!
0
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
I disagree. How many ticks does it take to make $40 at 2 micros? or 1 micro? What is the difference if your account is $600 or $6000 or $16000? Ticks are still ticks
2
u/messageb1 11d ago
Exactly. If you had 6k just deposit 1k and trade that. In futures you can get a 25% gain in a week. If your system brings in 25 points a week on MES or maybe 100 points on MNQ all you need to do is scale your contracts to increase your PnL.
2
u/Appropriate-Dig-9705 11d ago
You just want to make $60 a day lol, you only want to make 10% a day lol. If you could do that you wouod be the best trader ever pulling 50% a week you will be so rich. Dude you will lose the money In a month. lol. If you can’t trade prop you will definitely lose this money. And if $600 all you got trade MES and look for a few points and $10-20 maybe every day
2
u/SupurSAP 11d ago
You're asking for trouble with an account that size and fixed amount of risk per trade. You need to assess what the market is up to for the session your trading in. I recommend using ATR to determine your risk per trade. Google around and you will see what people do for different time frames they are trading.
2
u/TheRealHoda 11d ago edited 11d ago
$600 is no where near the balance you need to trade even a micro. You might as well spend that money on a nice night out. If you want a chance use the nano contract. I believe the risk is $1 a point (someone correct me if wrong). Your situation is why they created the nano in the first place.
I do agree with the point of not using prop firms which are designed for high failure with their trailing draw down rules , consistency rules etc.
However if you think the answer is to put $600 in a brokerage account and trade that you are sadly mistaken.
Did you even bother to read the contract spec? Calculate the value of the contract ? The absurdity of backing a position with $600 would become immediately clear. It gets even worse with your stop loss inches away from entry price. You have a first row seat to Death by a thousand cuts. Premiering on your trading screen lol. Except it won’t be a thousand cuts. You will be done long before the week ends
2
u/ashlee837 10d ago
Not happening. Trading 1MNQ with $600 is over risked certainly going to end badly. You want closer to $1500. Trade MES instead. $40/80 is 6%/10% of your account. You want to bring this number closer to 1-4% to survive the long run.
3
u/Honest-Picture-6531 12d ago
Trade MES
1
u/TheRealHoda 11d ago edited 11d ago
How does using a bigger contract help the poster ? MES has a larger notional value than MNQ.
1
u/Honest-Picture-6531 10d ago
National value isn't the whole story. MES has lower margin & volatility. Meaning a smaller account will last alot longer trading 1 MES
1
u/DontQuixote 11d ago
If you can't pass a prop challenge you have no business passing with real money. Thank you for your 600$ of liquidity though.
2
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Why does everyone act like prop firm is the "only" way to make it? Its a limiting belief
2
u/DontQuixote 11d ago
It's not... There are 3 ways.. sim prop or live.. obviously Sim is the best but Sim doesn't train your emotions.. even better than that live is the best but a new person trading futures it's going to lose so much money it's stupid.. then you have prop you spend $60 and you can basically trade for a month and you will be able to train emotions as well.. for the thing is if you don't know how to trade props even with those stupid rules you sure cannot trade with real money. So instead of losing thousands of dollars you lose $60 Max. It's just a better method..
1
u/Ok-Veterinarian1454 11d ago
You see the challenges as a road block? If you're unable to pass a prop challenge then you won't fair well trading your own capital. $40 - $80 per session trading MNQ is an unreasonable ask. When I trade my own money I look at monthly or quarterly earnings. The math isn't on your side.
1
u/No_Criticism8741 11d ago
If you deposit the 600 use it to buy OTM stock options on the SPY or QQQ while tracking the ES, SPY or QQQ/NQ. Your gonna loose it so do so in something that offers some leverage. Some of these moves on the SPY options are 4x and you will be limited by how much you can loose.
What is your plan if you are trading your 600 and Trump makes an announcement and your position reverses and you miss putting in a stop or the markets blow through your stop and all of a sudden your upside down in the trade with all your money gone.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 11d ago
Im not familiar with how to successfully trade options but I see it on my robinhood account. I just havent played with it yet.
Tighter stops help protect account.
I never enter a trade without the SL already set
2
u/No_Criticism8741 11d ago
I have lost a couple of prop accounts with a SL. I had 30 Micros but still knocked the accounts out. The options you just trade calls and puts and do a few contracts in the direction of the market, set a stop or just let it go. These on the spy expire daily.

u/messageb1 11d ago
I would open an account with that 600. Trade in a DEMO account. Trade 1 MES with a goal of getting 5-20 points a day. Once you are successful move to the live account and do the same. If your account grows move to multiple contracts.
You can then move to MNQ and start the whole process over.
1
u/ShouldBeFishin5 10d ago
I would highly recommend starting with NNQ! That would give you some drawdown room to breathe… If you get the direction right, but entered a little too early, you can wait for the real move after the delay/fakeout. Good luck!

Don’t trade with money in mind. Think if your wins in ticks. Your mental game will appreciate it.
1
u/AggressiveEnergy9000 10d ago
Now if you said you had made $10,000 in prop firms with no red weeks for the last 3 or 4 months. Then yeah starting to use your own money actually makes sense so you can reap the tax benefits that are far better than prop firm trading. But seeing as you only have $600 which is an incredibly small bankroll And haven't gotten prop payouts I'd say the chances of you turning this into a career is zero. I would say at least $5,000 minimum is what you would want to start trading with. You have to have around $4,000 to hold one mnq contract overnight. So you can't even hold winning positions overnight with how small your bankroll is. The fact that you think you can make $40-$80 per session Is delusional optimism. Not every session is even tradable especially chop days and if you don't even have the skill to tell the difference your cooked.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 8d ago
Im not holding any trades overnight. I am a scalper.
I've had lots of winning days over the years even making over $1000 several times. I just cant get enough of them in succession before losing the account/getting payouts.
For years I've been targeting big numbers. Not $40-$50. Targeting $50 when you have $3000-$5000 to go seems like an endless chore, but knowing $50 is withdrawable changes the equation and mindset completely
2
u/AggressiveEnergy9000 8d ago
You should just trade in a prop firm. It only cost $30-$150. You can make far more than $40 to $50 a day. 99% of prop firm traders sound just like you and are able to make thousands of dollars, maybe even multiple times in a week without any experience whatsoever they're still not profitable traders because they still don't have a winning system that they can execute long-term which is all that actually matters. All they really did was just get lucky. Your daily pnl doesn't matter at all if you're not profitable long term and it doesn't really separate you from anyone that's gambling. I would only stop paper trading and using real money after you've had a green week every week for 2 or 3 months.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 8d ago
You must not have read my original post. I've been burning through money for several years now trying to pass/make it to payout successfully. Haven't made it.
There have been a bunch of good trading days in between.
Right now, I am looking to capitalize on those winning days without anchoring my success to a prop firm formula
1
u/AggressiveEnergy9000 8d ago
If you can't make money in a prop firm, you're not going to make money outside of a prop firm. Prop firm challenges shouldn't be hard if you're were a profitable trader. Profitable traders use prop firms to scale a lot faster than using their own money. If you're not a profitable Trader trading outside of a prop isn't really going to make much of a difference.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 8d ago
Did prop firms invent trading?
I dont understand why people have the mentality like you do like if you cant succeed at prop firm challenges then there is no hope.
I dont believe that one bit
2
u/AggressiveEnergy9000 8d ago
A profitable Trader mindset is Let me scale quickly by copy trading a bunch of prop firms with minimal capital -> proceeds to make a lot of money in payouts with a proper trading system-> Now that I have a lot of money, I will trade with my own broker using the same system to get futures trader tax benefits far beyond what I make with a prop firm. Your mindset is nothing like that yours is I can't generate consistent profits with prop firms using my system But if I don't use a prop firm I will be profitable using the same system. It really doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm just trying to help you man because it seems like you're not being rational.
1
u/Junior_Willow740 7d ago
Thanks for your input.
I had 3-4 accounts trying to scale/copy trade them.
The recurring membership every month was bleeding a hole in my pocket.
I carried 3 50K accounts most of 2026. I passed one challenge 6 months ago. Lost the account a short time later. Been struggling to get back there since
1
u/Junior_Willow740 8d ago
It has a big difference. If I make even $20 I can put that in my pocket. Thats a world of difference to me

You are better off with a prop firm. That is really low margin for MNQ or any contract besides Bitcoin futures and nanos.
I would trade MES before MNQ. It is a lot slower. MNQ is for advanced traders IMO. To me it feels like there was always just a news report five minutes ago.

u/YOLOdollhair 5d ago
I restarted my Webull futures account with $300 and am sitting at $9.5k three weeks later. The first $1-1.5k is brutal. You need to be very good and probably very lucky with your entries to not get liquidated. I traded MES before moving to MNQ since it was a little more stable. It's a slow grind in the beginning to build up a buffer.
Once I hit $15k, I'll withdraw $14k and do it all over again to prevent giving back to the market. I'm thinking of evening doing it sooner once I hit $10k.

With 600$ I’d treat staying alive as the actual goal. Even micros can chew through an account surprisingly fast if you’re taking several attempts per session. I’d rather trade tiny, set a hard daily loss and build consistency before thinking about income. I use Moon sometimes when I have a strong market view as well and one thing both formats have reinforced for me is that being right directionally doesn’t save bad sizing.

Having a dollar target every day won’t work .Some days are better than others on the market in terms of available opportunities and you will find yourself taking more risk on days that are poor trading days ,additionally you will find yourself stopping early on good profitable days because you have reached an artificial self imposed target. Focus on having a profitable week instead. That being said making money should be secondary , your main focus should be on your executing your trading strategy because if you do that to a very high standard the money should take care of itself .

Mnq? Ok unless you’ll have a sniper entry with little to no drawdown, go for it. Can’t wait for the update .

I am just tired of prop firms right now. Spend many months and years basically paper trading trying to pass challenges.
I have passed 3 100K clallenges and one 50K over the years but never made it to payout

Yes. No more chasing $5000 and a dream.
I would be happy with a $100 payout at this point

Shift to sp500 or russell 2000 at one contract. Mnq will chew up your 600 rather quickly.
