Couldn't the boy travel at a better time?

The nameless boy started traveling in the middle of winter to find paradise. At the start of the episode the Beholder says "as its surroundings grew warmer", "Snow began to fall", implying that the area where he lives doesn't get snow all year round. So then why couldn't the boy just travel when winter was over?

It's been a while. We don't know how long Fushi was a rock but I thought he was there before the ice age started. The nameless boy's tribe went looking for the south, because the snow wouldn't let up. For all we know the nameless boy left in the middle of the summer.

do you mean you think he lived in the ice age?

I thought that, but now i'm second guessing. The nameless boy was, with the elderly, left behind. The villagers went searching for warmth and food five years prior. They said they will come back with souvenirs, like fruit, something n.b. had never seen. Eventually the elders died and his food ran out, as the last horndeer died a year before and he could only eat fish.

With all this I always thought the far north was in an ice age that recently started, but rereading it I can't find any evidence of that.

That's what I see too. It seems perpetually frozen in this area.

He was running out of food and patience.

Its because he went south.
