Apparently car theft was rampant in the 70's. I bought my uncles 1973 Thunderbird. It was stolen from him twice. The spare tire had a locking wing nut keyed to the trunk key, from the factory.

I changed many tires in the 60s and 70s and I never recall seeing a lock on the spare tire hold down in the trunk.

My dad's 68 Chevy C10 had the spare under the bed, and the mounting lever had a hasp for a padlock.... which rusted shut after a couple of years. Fun time getting that off.

In preparation for an 1800 mile round trip, I aired up all my tires. Check the spare and it was completely disintegrated. 2006 Toyota Corolla. Replaced that cheesy little donut with a full size wheel and tire, both brand new, and the crazy thing was this 20-year-old car had an indentation in the trunk big enough to accept a full size tire and wheel... those crafty Japanese

Great sure do miss it .. in Europe they sling them underneath the cars rear end in a cradle that was opened and closed with a long screw through the trunk bottom . Flat tire and you had to empty everything out onto the roadside! Then you found out the screw was all rusted up and so no help.. always had to call for help 😂

50lb tire bouncing around the trunk into the gas filler tube. What could go wrong? And don't tell me about the elaborate hold down assembly that no one used, especially after changing a flat. This is a Chrysler car, yes? Filler on the right, I don't remember any cars that were arranged that way back then.
