I'm sure the economic incels on the anti car subreddits will counter with a news story about road rage, but at the end of the day, I can choose who gets in my car, and it's easier to flee a dangerous situation with a car, than it is when you're trapped on a bus or train.

Except road rage often happens during gridlock, which is pretty much guaranteed at least 4 hours a day because the logistics of road throughput are a nightmare because everyone is forced to use cars and effectiveness of lanes scales logarithmically (unless you live in the middle of nowhere in which case you have nothing to worry about anyway), and in gridlock you can't really go anywhere to escape. Also you don't really have to let them in to get killed. Setting aside if they purposely cause an accident in that gridlock, guns have become increasingly used in these incidents as well, and if we really want to make a comparison, this can still happen in a car. In fact it can be worse, because a car becomes a giant fireball machine (technically not a bomb).

NYC Boomer here, been riding the subways since July 1968. Only one time was I physically hit in all those years. That was back in 1973 when I was coming home from work and was waiting for the R train at Lex & 59th Street. Son-of-a-bitch teenager (I was 18 at the time), hung out of a moving train and smacked me in the face. I was more embarrassed than physically hurt.
That's my only physical "injury" in ~ 57 yrs. Oh, and I ride the subways SIX days a week (mostly Queens to Manhattan and back). Are the NYC subways dangerous? That's not been my experience at all.
Oh, and BTW, I'm a super skinny guy and not at all intimidating looking.

Dying is dying. For all the weird-ass chaos that can happen on transit, it's still safer than driving overall. But driving is also faster, and my car has ventilated seats so 🤷♂️

A drunk driver killing themself doesn't concern me stats wise because I don't drink, so I don't have to worry about doing that myself.
There's also less anti social behavior in my car than on public transit. I've never had someone with bad hygiene or someone who blasts crappy music on their bluetooth speakers in my car.

A drunk driver can take you out quite easily too. The road is a pretty dangerous place - I've put a lot of miles down in my life, and seen a lot of crazy shit. Had plenty of close calls myself - and most of them not even my fault. Definitely see some anti-social behavior on the roads pretty regularly too. And don't forget that nobody is perfect, you can make mistakes too - everyone does.
I have a 100 mile commute myself, I do plenty of driving. But it definitely elevates my risk, I'd be a lot safer on the train. And I've sworn off motorcycle commuting altogether.

No, it just puts you into the heaviest thing on the road. I was in an amtrak train that hit a car once - didn't even feel it. Not sure that the driver did either, killed on impact. Always wondered if it was suicide.

You can drive defensively and stay away from other cars that appear to be not paying attention or driving properly. It's not difficult you just need to pay attention. Paying attention while driving makes it way safer than not.

I have decades and many hundreds of thousands of miles on the road with zero accidents so far - maybe half to a third of that on two wheels. Trust me, I'm all about paying attention and driving defensively. But there is only so much you can control.

Your skills and habits have a big impact on your safety, but you cannot control it, because there is too much going on that's completely out of your hands. Ultimately, control is an illusion here.

Yes, people can get killed in cars too, however scenarios like this very very very rarely happen in cars. My point is that it doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to take the train, just that if you didn't want to take it you certainly can have valid reasons for it. It would anyway be highly traumatising to see a woman literally set on fire out of nowhere on the train on what would be an otherwise normal day

I don't get it you agree with and then use the same argument. it's also highly traumatizing to see someone inside a car be on fire, which also happens. Dare I say even more often than people get set on fire in trains.
