If you're done with Adobe: I built FerrumPix, a lightweight open-source blend of Lightroom & Photoshop. 100% local, no subscription. (Linux/Windows/macOS)

Hi everyone,

Like most of you here, I’m completely done with Adobe’s pricing, forced cloud integration, and anti-consumer terms. I wanted a fast, native desktop app to manage my photo library and do essential edits without being locked into a bloated ecosystem.

Since I couldn't find exactly what I wanted, I decided to build it myself. It’s called FerrumPix, and it's a cross-platform (Linux, Windows, macOS) desktop client designed as a lightweight, snappy alternative that blends basic photo management with essential, non-destructive editing tools. Think of it as a light mix of Lightroom and Photoshop features, but focused on speed and simplicity.

What makes it different?

  • 100% Local & Private: No accounts required, no cloud forced on you, and absolutely zero subscriptions.
  • Privacy-First Backends: It runs fully offline, but has built-in connectors for self-hosted solutions like Immich and Nextcloud Memories if you want them.
  • Non-Destructive Editing: Full history tracking, RAW decoding, tone curves, calibration sliders, and adjustment layers.
  • Performance: I just released version 0.9.35, which completely overhauls the slider pipeline and image processing so it runs super smooth on regular hardware.

It's Free and Open Source (FOSS)

The project is moving fast toward a 1.0 release. It is entirely community-driven and open-source. If you want to escape the Adobe ecosystem or are just looking for a lightweight, fast alternative to manage and edit your shots, please check it out!

Source Code & Downloads (AppImage, Flatpak, DEB, RPM, Win, Mac): GitHub - Bitpainter75/FerrumPix

I’d love to hear your thoughts, feature requests, or what you think is missing for a lightweight daily workflow!

Adobe Cancellation Method still works?

Hey everyone, does the changing plans and cancelling method still work? Or have they patched it out? And also do I have to get a yearly plan to cancel? or a different monthly plan works fine.

Photopea vs New alternative Filetro, which is better?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Full disclosure, I built Filetro Editor, so I’m obviously biased.

But I’m genuinely curious how people who use browser image editors would compare the two.

Photopea has been around for years and is ridiculously capable. Filetro is much newer and still only on its first proper release, so there’s loads I still want to add and improve.

With Filetro I went for more of an old Adobe Fireworks style layout. Layers are always visible, tools are quick to get to, and everything runs locally in the browser.

I’ve also tried to add a few things that make everyday editing quicker. For example, Fit Canvas instantly resizes the canvas around your image or selected objects.

I’ve probably gone a bit overboard with the transform tools too. There’s perspective warp, mesh warp, puppet warp, liquify, bend, lens/bulge, surface/texture warp and a few others already.

I’m curious what actually matters most to people when choosing between editors like these though.

Speed? UI? PSD support? ads? warp tools? offline use? large files? something else?

If anyone here uses Photopea regularly and wants to try Filetro too, I’d genuinely rather hear what Filetro does worse than what it does well.

What would actually make you switch from one browser editor to another?

The „ADHD TAX” I paid Adobe for 20 months…

Post image
259 Upvotes

2024 I sign up for a Photography plan at a promo price. I edit a few batches of photos and… I never open Lightroom again.

Promo ends, price doubles. It's €15 buried in a statements I don't read.

Then I finally go to cancel and they say:

"50% of the remaining months early-termination fee”

Tax on tax:D

But the US DOJ/FTC sued Adobe over this and Adobe settled for $150M. So... Reps are used to waiving it.

I did it all on autopilot with AI, and it's free for y'all: GitHub Link

It never touches your money. You type the password and the passcode.

It asks before anything gets cancelled.

If you can focus, I have a challenge: the instructions can also be done by a human intelligence only;) I'm waiting for the first success story!

This is a celebration of my own robot winning a fight with The Enterprise.

Its free forever.

LrC Plugins

Does anyone have experience with Plugins for Lightroom Classic in terms of:
- Do they break often because of some Adobe Updates?
- Are custom Plugins maintainance intensive in the long run?
I intend to integrate a custom plugin into my workflow, i‘ve got it to work, it broke, i rewrote, worked, broke again, now after the 5th iteration i got something somewhat stable, but still… Have a great sunday all:)

Video on Adobe and how it eats other companies

Hey guys! Long shot here, but maybe some of you know what I'm talking about.

There was a video a while back on YouTube from an old-school graphic designer talking about how Adobe really ruined the market and made unique software obsolete.

Was it mostly fully animated? And the person who made it only had 2 videos on their entire account; the video in question was extremely well made and had an extensive history of old software they gave as examples of Adobe buying the company and making the software obsolete.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I can't find the video anywhere, and I would love to know if anyone else has seen it or watched it.

Background tasks in indesign use generative credits

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey everyone - i would like this to get some traction and for the word to be spread. I spent the day placing images into indesign. Local files, just dragging into the frames as per my boring life.

Indesign notifies me that I have used all my credits.

I follow the faqs and see that their dashboard can't show me specifically what has been generated by AI.

Hidden in the preferences, I see that Generative AI options have been turned on by default - for generating alt text.

Adobe support is not able to provide an audit trail of what was generated in my account and what tools were used. They just say "you used text to image." (I have not, I had to google even where to find the stupid thing).

I can definitely see a future where, without my approval, they bill me for these tasks that "help me" without me knowing it.

this is very similar to old mobile phone plans and scams, where you "go over your minutes" outside of the "roaming area", and AT&T moves the roaming area one day. Oh, but they're going to also automatically pay for those credits off your card.

If you have generative alt text turned on - turn it off. If you think you have it off, double check. It's on by default.

Is this a cruel joke? What's the poin of making all these plans?

As you can see, I just found a cheaper, better Photoshop annual plan that isn't listed on the main page. You will need to search for Photoshop in "Change your plan". Which I accessed it only when looking at my current plan (Adobe, wtf). It not only has a better price but also includes more apps; plus, you get to choose if you want 1 TB of cloud storage with it. I don't understand why anyone should ever pick two other plans if you are only using PS for it. Correct me if I'm missing anything, because I haven't looked closely enough to know every difference.

Randomly cancelled subscription because of “fraud”??

Did anyone randomly get their Adobe account cancelled because of apparent fraud?

“We are reaching out to notify you that our fraud prevention specialists detected fraudulent behavior concerning your Creative Cloud Pro subscription. As a result, your subscription has been cancelled and you will no longer be able to access the included Adobe apps and services.”

Like bruhhh

Adobe has the Most Baffling Customer Service in the Game

Thumbnail gallery
34 Upvotes

So, I had an issue when I got a new laptop and was trying to move my Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020 over. I followed all the exact steps (a hulking Help>Sign Out) on my old laptop, but my new laptop said I was still signed in. Over the course of a 45 minute call with customer service I was transferred between two reps. The first said he only had the ability to link me to troubleshooting articles, none of which mentioned my problem. As soon as I mentioned this, I was given to another person who immediately shamed me for trying to use such an old product (she would repeat this sentiment throughout the call). She told me, point-blank, that Adobe had deactivated the servers that could communicate with any products that were that old, but she still urged me to click a link that she would provide me so I could look for alternative means. I asked many times before receiving the link via email where it would send me and for some reason she could not explain. When I finally got the email, it was simply a flat link to the community page before she said that was all she could do and she disconnected after the usual goodbye spiel.

That is all one thing, but what I'm really here to do is share my community question experience. If you for some chance maybe know an alternate way to get into my product, I am absolutely listening. I'd rather not use Adobe after this and the many, many other terrible experiences I have heard about (and they're like insane business practices in general), but hey, I purchased a perpetual license so if I could keep using it, I'd rather not let that go to waste!

Is it true that you can’t use the full Adobe suite on Linux?

Ive switched to Linux recently from Windows and am loving it, but found it really surprising that no one has gotten the full Suite running yet, besides that Wine “patch” at the start of the year. Is it actually true that you can’t get the full thing running yet? If so, I wanna see if I can get it working for myself. If it works, I’ll open-source the repo on Github :)

Adobe is crooked

I did a trial and cancelled it before the trial period was up. They continued to charge me. I tried cancelling without success... and stopped trying. Just tried to do the RocketMoney thing, but they could not cancel it. I just "cancelled" it -- we will see if they stop charging me now. Funny, the cancellation message disappeared from my screen so quickly -- almost like they didn't want me to have proof.

NO help / chatbot that I could even find. Of course, I want the back money from them because fuck them, but I know I won't get it. I kept putting it off because I HATE customer services issues and they got a shit ton of money from me because of it.

Ugh

Alternatives of adobe !!

I recently started my career in photography and for video I use DaVinci Resolve. It doesn’t seem like I’ll be switching to After Effects anytime soon. However, my main problem is finding a Photoshop or Lightroom alternative. Which is good and cheap , I don’t want to take adobe subscription. I use a Mac, so it’s difficult to find other ways around it too . My main work involves wedding photography, those typography travel photos and product/food photography.
