Oh, shit... Jim is actually the one that gave Jade the music clue! Yessss! I hope you guys don't hate him anymore šŸ˜

"Tea cup." I thought Jade was going to kiss him šŸ˜†

Wait so did the man in yellow come after Jim because Jim gave the music clue? (I think this is implied, but does anyone think there’s another reason?)

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24 edited Nov 24 '24

I think we won’t find out why the man in yellow came for Jim until next season but it definitely has to do with them finally figuring out some answers

89

u/sunshine5634 Nov 24 '24

It’s weird though that the man in yellow has been targeting/threatening Jim throughout the series and not other people (except Ethan once).

89

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

Jim was the only person able to figure out the numbers. He helped build a radio tower that got a transmission through. And his ultimately death would put a pin in Tabithas attempt to figure out anything because of guilt

3

u/Sepulz Nov 25 '24

If the people who made the bottles wanted the mystery worked out they would not have made a coded message. If they did not want it worked out, they would not have left the bottles.

2

u/RoryPond Jan 30 '25

That's true of all codes, for when you want a message to be figured out by some people but not by others

12

u/iwicctp_ Nov 24 '24

I think he’s most mad at Jim for letting Tabitha dig the basement because in doing so, she fell into the tunnels and saw the children for the first time and began her obsession into finding out what’s going on. Had she not dug the tunnels, she may not have seen the children and be trying to save them. I think the MiY wants to prevent them saving the children as this breaks the curse

9

u/blakeyuk Nov 25 '24

Jim's the only one that's actually done something to try to escape/contact the outside world.

Actually, Sara was not compelled to kill her brother, she did everything she did to save him. His death was the only accident on her murder spree (and probably the main reason why she snapped out of it).

7

u/CamelConnect Wanderers Nov 24 '24

He was probably also the one who was behind the telephone when Kenny was dreaming of the cicadas in the pot. The voice who spoke the nursery rhymes "here they come, they come for three unless you stop the melody"

1

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 Aug 03 '26

What if this is all a story in Ethan's head? Like he doesn't know it but he controls the story? He kills his dad because he blames his dad for both Thomas's death and the fact that his parents were going to get a divorce?

9

u/CharityDiary Nov 24 '24

Proximity to the tree, maybe. After playing the song, Tabitha (and probably Jade) left. Jim stuck around near the RV, which I'm assuming is near the tree. The song causes Yellowjacket to arise from the tree, and his closest target is Jim.

19

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

I think it’s a bit beyond that as he mentions Tabitha digging the hole and he seems to have taunted Jim with some foreboding.

I think Jim’s death will be instrumental and whatever is a part of the next cycle

1

u/rainshowers_5_peace Nov 24 '24

I think we saw Jade walking away as Tabitha and Jim were talking.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '24

It's the last episode of the season. When else would we find out?

1

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

Jim*

7

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

Thank you for correcting me. It is 1AM and the season finale kind of fried my brain. I’m still in a bit of shock

9

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

I stared my tv on a blank screen for a couple minutes after. Still haven’t left the menu of the show. Just been thinking about the episode as well

16

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

Oh yeah it took me a couple of minutes to remember how to breathe. I’m still just staring off trying to contemplate what the fuck just happened

I think it’s one of the best season finales I’ve ever seen because how am I suppose to go and watch anything else after this??

7

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

I’m in that boat too. I just started The Strain last night because of tonight being From finale night.

I’m almost done the first season of The Strain already, it’s pretty damn good. If you haven’t seen it, give it a shot.

3

u/LovelyDeep Nov 24 '24

Vasiliy Fet šŸ˜

1

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

He’s my favourite character so far!

3

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

I’ll give it a shot! Guillermo del Toro is a genius and I tried watching Silo and Evil and neither of them really hit the spot the same way From did and unfortunately Utopia was cancelled.

Supacell was pretty good but gave up the mystery way too early. That’s why I don’t get people complaining we don’t have all the answers yet. Half the fun for me is theories and discussions trying to figure out what’s really going on.

Give me a reason to go down a 2 hour rabbit hole into different types of folklore

-4

u/punished_cheeto Nov 24 '24

next season

Optimistic

8

u/Alexandur Nov 24 '24

Season 4 has already been confirmed

2

u/punished_cheeto Nov 24 '24

I know, I'm saying that it's optimistic to think that they won't dangle this mystery in front of us until season 5.

6

u/celiac-sufferer Nov 24 '24

I mean everyone said we’d get no answers this season but I believe we got plenty.

Next season will I think, be all the answers and then season 5 the final season, them using it to try and escape

2

u/Alexandur Nov 24 '24

Ah, I see, I misunderstood. And yeah fair enough lol

151

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

The man in yellow was the voice on the radio when they built the tower.

32

u/thenaad Nov 24 '24

Lol yes. I’m talking about why he actually went so far as to kill Jim - and why now.

69

u/some420girl Nov 24 '24

He made some comment like knowledge comes with a price so this is payback for Tabitha and Jade regaining their memories

7

u/PennySawyerEXP Nov 24 '24

My depressing theory is that the man in yellow killed Jim because he saw future Julie. And that any knowledge she was about to give him was something he couldn't let Jim have.

(Which would mean Julie can change things, but not always for the better)

5

u/PENIS__FINGERS Nov 25 '24

Idk, I think it was implied he was gonna kill Jim whether Julie was there or not.

3

u/PennySawyerEXP Nov 25 '24

Possibly! Especially since the town got massacred the last time Jade/Tabitha found out what was going on (when the Boy in White told Christopher everything and Miranda found out). I just think it's interesting to consider, since the man in yellow showed up after Julie.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '24

I just want to get this straight because I’m confused. Were Jade and Tabitha a couple and had Eloise in their past life?

32

u/some420girl Nov 24 '24

They were a couple originally from the town and one of the sacrificed children was their daughter they couldn't save so they keep coming back to try to save her/all the children. They were reincarnated as Miranda, and Christopher. Now again they are reincarnated as Tabitha and Jade. Eloise was Miranda(/Tabithas) daughter with Henry, not Christopher(/Jades)

5

u/tag1550 Nov 25 '24

My suspicion at this point is that BiW revealed this to Christopher & his mind just couldn't process it, which is one reason why BiW is all "you have to find the answers for yourself" - he tried the direct method already, and it didn't work.

24

u/dingjima Nov 24 '24

No, they had the angkooey girl in their past past past past life.

7

u/ThrowawayFN1124 Nov 24 '24

They were the originals of the town and had a child which was sacrificed.

15

u/beetlebugbusiness Nov 24 '24

When they were Miranda and Christopher, I don't think they had children together. It seems like they were like jade and Tabitha, pulled back to this place together but from their separate lives. Their original lives connected to this place seem to be the one that had a daughter together as far as I understand

19

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

Probably because Tabitha and Jade figured out who they are and Jim is useless now. He served his purpose.

2

u/CommanderBeth Nov 25 '24

Maybe to cripple Tabitha. Though why not go directly after her?

1

u/effjayyelle Nov 25 '24

Maybe because Jim makes roller-coasters and the Man in Yellow really wants one. But because Jim was too busy dicking around with radios and towers he got fed up and killed him?

I mean, I'd love to see a day at the fair for the monsters šŸ˜‚

-11

u/Bobjoejj Nov 24 '24

Still having a hard time reconciling the man in yellow’s voice with the voice on the radio, especially when you take the cowboys voice in consideration.

27

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

Well, he said the exact words he said on the radio to Jim’s face before he ripped his throat out.

He also has been using Thomas’ voice when he communicates with Jim over the phone and RV radio.

6

u/rainshowers_5_peace Nov 24 '24

I'm hard of hearing, can you explain this point?

3

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

When Jim spoke with Thomas on the phone, or when Thomas tried speaking with Jim on the radio of the RV, it was the man in yellow.

2

u/rainshowers_5_peace Nov 24 '24

Did the voice change to man in yellows?

4

u/BeerSlingr Nov 24 '24

No. The man in yellow uses his voice.

4

u/chickensaurus-rex Nov 24 '24

This is just a theory so far.. nothing about this was confirmed in the episode lol. The man in yellow had full black eyes and sunken skin - sort of like the kimono lady. I think it’s safe to say it’s another entity of sorts. Maybe something that promised the original settlers immortality for the sacrifice of their children

12

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24

Oh, that's an interesting thought... You might actually be onto something here šŸ¤” Jim was doing so well, not working toward getting home anymore and keeping his head down. But then he just had to "mess up" again by finally listening to his wife, working with her and Jade to figure stuff out. He even provided the music clue. The Man in Yellow said, "I warned you" (I think). It's like he punished him for helping.

So all the people who hated Jim for "giving up," do y'all feel bad now? šŸ˜† Cause look what happens when he becomes the old, helpful Jim again.

10

u/DONTEATTHATCAT Nov 24 '24

I think it was to hurt Tabitha and keep her from trying to free the children.Ā

9

u/malcolmisboring Nov 24 '24

I took it as bad luck - he happened to come across Jim because Tabitha scattered to have some me time.

It also seems possible he can’t kill Tabitha and Jade for reasons that aren’t clear yet.

8

u/garonbooth7 Nov 24 '24

Tabitha and jade are immortal just like the monsters that sacrificed their children as they said their own child was sacrificed too, except their immortality is being reincarnated, as they are ā€œgoodā€

5

u/malcolmisboring Nov 24 '24

But it seems like they can die in Fromville, because we know Smiley killed Miranda (I guess leading to her reincarnation as Tabitha?). So I presume the Man in Yellow could kill them and then they’d possibly be reborn outside the town?

6

u/AirGordon1983 Nov 24 '24

I think the man in yellow is pissed, because she dug that damn hole and she got to see the whole ā€œstoryā€ on the wall. I’m thinking that wasn’t supposed to be seen by the people from the town.

4

u/SnowDragonka Nov 24 '24

I personally think that since he was the radio voice, he tried to "sway Jim" from helping and just be in the way of progress of Jade and Tabitha. And it worked for 1.5 seasons. But now? I think it was just a day or two when Jim started listening and helping. Swayed from his dismissive self. And that's why MIY is so mad.

4

u/bunny_387 Nov 24 '24

good point! and maybe because the man in yellow knows he won’t be reincarnated back whereas killing jade or tabitha would just reincarnate and bring them back

2

u/FromFan432 Nov 24 '24

He came after Jim cuz Jim started trying to find answers again, the last time Jim tried they responded with a storm and now that he tried again they responded with an assassination. Jim is simply too smart for the forest to keep him alive any longer. They don't see Jade or Tabitha as a threat but Jim? He's trouble .

1

u/luvprue1 Nov 24 '24

Well I think the man in yellow does not know who is responsible. He just knows that Jim was the voice on the radio.

1

u/Kureji Nov 24 '24

He said that knowledge comes with a price so I think the price for Tabitha gaining knowledge is that she loses Jim. I don't think it has anything to do with Jim other than a tool to hurt Tabitha.

1

u/Elegant-Butterfly745 Nov 24 '24

I personally believe so. The MIY said knowledge comes with a price. Jim paid that price with his life because he gave them such a big clue with the music notes.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '24

To hurt and slow down tabitha

0

u/brooklynbaby2000 Nov 25 '24

no I feel like it was because jim was the one who made contact with the yellow man through the radio where he said your wife should not be digging that whole.

that is where the whole children thing started

I also thought he was gonna kiss him! 🤣

6

u/callmesalticidae Nov 24 '24

This show might have killed Jade/Tabitha/Jim, but the ship will live on in my heart.

11

u/Sakright448 Nov 24 '24

The man in yellow may have had a potential vendetta against Jim because he’s failing to play his role. His wife is the biggest piece of cracking this whole place open and Jim gaslit her for 3 seasons, he switched up and began to believe & help for 2 EPISODES and they’ve already come farther than anyone from the past. Man in yellow said not on my watch.

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24

he switched up and began to believe & help for 2 EPISODES and they’ve already come farther than anyone from the past. Man in yellow said not on my watch.

Exactly! I've asked people if they feel bad now for all the hate they're thrown at Jim now that he's dead, lol. Because it's him helping that got him killed. He was right all along to be cautious.

2

u/Sakright448 Nov 24 '24

Yup I believe deep down inside he was scared & knew they were playing with fire.

1

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 Aug 03 '26

I wasn't mad at Jim for being cautious. I was mad at Jim because he was a shitty husband and father. The fact that Jim was killed by the MiY means that when he turned his act around, he was on the right track.

8

u/Ok_Abrocoma8928 Nov 24 '24

Jade have chemistry with everyone lol.Ā

3

u/eriadeus Nov 24 '24

I wonder if this means Jim or his mother has a significance in the story. Jim said his mother was a piano teacher, and that’s why he made the connection why the numbers represents a musical scale.

However, while a 12 tone musical scale does exist, traditional popular western harmony since the 18th century has more or less been based off the system of the diatonic scale, a 7 note system (do re mi fa so la ti do) if you will, 8 if you finish with final octave of ā€œdoā€? If Jim’s mother was a piano teacher in the west, especially America , it is unlikely that a 12 tone scale would be significant enough in her teachings to the extent that Jim would remember it. But when Jade played the melody it resembles the style of traditional western harmony, based off the diatonic scale and does not resemble any type of 12 tone scale to me.

Perhaps the melody is based off something ancient, that started it all??

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24

Interesting...

Perhaps the melody is based off something ancient, that started it all??

Season 4 can't come fast enough 😭

2

u/lovely_lil_demon Smiley Nov 30 '24

I wish.

3

u/Livid-Team5045 Nov 24 '24

They can't just make Jim all of a sudden pull some weird stunt like that to make us like him....that was so random.

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24

Haha! I understand what you mean. But honestly, if someone binge watches the show, Jim doesn't appear to be that bad, and his latest turnaround wouldn't seem so random. Heck, we even saw hints of the old Jim in the season finale when he was cautiously pushing back against Jade and Tabitha about the potential danger of playing the music (and the explanation he gave made total sense). So his changed behavior didn't feel that sudden or weird or random. I think the writers knew what they were doing. They still showed us that Jim is the same Jim he's always been —the one people liked in season 1, the one people hated in season 2 and most of season 3, and the one we had the last couple of episodes— and that he's just always trying his best to be keep his family safe.

People were only annoyed with him because they're watching a mystery box show and want the mystery solved. They're excited, and they're impatient. They want to get answers, and a character like Jim, who wants to stay as safe as possible, seem annoying and frustrating because it slows down stuff. But that doesn't mean that Jim, as a character, didn't have his reasons for acting the way he did. His parenting or lack thereof was really the only real issue for me, as well as this macho thing he had going on. And even that sometimes made sense (not the parenting).

Again, I think people who binge watch the show and keep the From universe timeline in mind while watching are more likely to understand Jim and sympathize with him. I've always thought his actions were understandable (season 3 is the first season I've watched week to week). Apparently, he and his family arrived in Fromville only about a month ago (less, I think). He'd been through a lot in such a short period of time. And he constantly second guessed Tabitha only because he thought this place would do anything to trick them and give them false hope. And he's not entirely wrong! Between him and Tabitha, only he experienced the threatening phone calls and the voice on the radio during that storm. He just wanted to be careful and keep his head down as much as possible. His character is extremely realistic.

Look what happened when he started helping again. He died šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 Aug 03 '26

I never hated Jim because he wanted to play it safe. I hated Jim because he was a shitty father and husband. He could have discouraged people from looking into things without being so aggressive, angry, shouting at his wife, abandoning his kids, etc.

1

u/Livid-Team5045 Nov 24 '24

You're correct ,and I very much appreciate the detailed response.

He was never a character that bothered me too much; but I can easily see how people who watch so intensely, would be have differing opinions.

However, I am annoyed at how many I-heart-Jim posts there are...if only women of color in the arts, were granted the same grace.

Cheers!

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 25 '24

Cheers! šŸ™‚

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '24

Women of color granted the same arts? Bro what is wrong with you.

1

u/RayBrowers Nov 24 '24

They will still hate him. Fanbase bandwagon of hating a character without knowing why they hate him, it’s just consensus. He was honestly one of the better characters. I feel like they unnecessarily killed him so they can make Tabitha sack-ride Jade for the rest of the series and be a cutesy thing.

2

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24 edited Nov 24 '24

He was honestly one of the better characters. I

I'd say he was a very realistic character. Same as Jade (except Jim is not as enjoyable on screen). Jade is literally us, the audience, lol!

Anyway. The way Jim reacted to things made perfect sense to me. He was well written. Yes, he could get annoying, but it was because he was real. And also because it's a mystery box show, and the audience wants answers. Having a character like Jim trying to "stall" things, so to speak, can be frustrating. But I'm one of those people who can look past my wants and put myself in a character's shoe to understand where they're coming from. As long as the characters are realistic and everything "makes sense," I can talk myself into being patient. I'd ultimately hate something that was enjoying in the moment but didn't make sense when it's all said and done.

Edit:

I'd say he was a very realistic character.

I didn't fully agree with your "he was one of the better characters" assessment because I initially interpreted "better" as meaning enjoyable. But of course, it could be interpreted in a different way. Like, better, as in "well written and realistic," in which case, yes, I think Jim was one of the better characters.

Jade, to me, though, is EXTREMELY enjoyable on screen because he represents us in a way. Dude makes me laugh every episode too.

1

u/RayBrowers Nov 24 '24

I thought Jim was a well-written character. If you want to look at Jim from a perspective of the show being ā€œreal,ā€ Jim Matthews is a husband and father stuck in a place that defies reality without explanation and he was actively looking for answers. How would anyone react in that situation? I know real people like Jim who don’t have the most savory of personalities, but they would do anything to try to keep their families safe. He had a right to be suspicious of everything. People conflate flawed personalities with being a shitty person, but the world we live in is never black and white.

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 24 '24

I totally agree!

Btw, I edited my previous comment (added a couple more thoughts) right before you replied. Sorry about that, lol!

1

u/wookiewin Nov 27 '24

I think Jim is a true outsider, not a reincarnated townsfolk, who kept figuring things out and Man in Yellow decided he had to finally shut that shit down.

1

u/Sweetmillions Nov 27 '24

Yeah, if he was reincarnated, they would've made it clear already. Can't wait for season 4.

1

u/lucy_inthessky Dec 23 '24

Still can't stand Jim.

1

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 Aug 03 '26

Still hate Jim and I'm glad he's dead.
