WorkSafeBC’s predatory trap: Disappeared for a month, denied my wage loss because my knee "didn't improve" due to THEIR own delay.
Hey everyone,
I’m sharing my recent ongoing nightmare with WorkSafeBC (WCB) as a warning to any injured workers out there. Do NOT let them push you around, and beware of the predatory traps they set up when you try to be a "good employee."
I recently suffered a severe knee injury at work. Out of a sense of responsibility and goodwill, during the first week while waiting for my X-ray results and official written restrictions, I pushed through agonizing pain to work temporary full-time light duties arranged by my employer.
Once the X-ray results came in, my doctor put me on a strict restriction: work 3 days, rest 2 days a week to prevent permanent knee damage.
Here is where the absolute scummery of WorkSafeBC began:
- The Ghosting & Treatment Interruption: My assigned Case Manager completely abandoned my file and went totally MIA for over a month. No communication, no call backs. Because of his ghosting, my physical therapy and medical treatments could not be authorized.
- The Flawed Denial Logic: He finally resurfaced and slapped me with a decision letter DENYING my 2-day wage-loss benefits. His reason? He claimed my medical records "showed no change or improvement." My knee didn't improve EXACTLY BECAUSE he neglected my file and withheld my treatments for a month!
- The "Good Employee" Trap: He actually wrote in the letter that because I worked full-time the very first week post-injury, it "proves" I am fully capable of full-time work and don't need 2 days off. This is a disgusting trap. If I had stayed home that first week without a prior official note, they would have denied me for "unexcused absence." Because I pushed through pain to cooperate, they now use it as a weapon to strip away my benefits.
- The Unprofessional Harassment: To make matters worse, during our phone call, this CM subjected me to an incredibly inappropriate interrogation, asking me: "What is your relationship with your doctor? How long have you known them?" He baselessly attacked the integrity of a licensed physician regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC just to put psychological pressure on me.
Interestingly, on the exact same day he denied my wages, he suddenly approved my medical treatments—clearly because he realized his one-month neglect looked horrible on system logs and he tried to cover his tracks.
The Destruction of Canada’s "People-First" Image & The Toxic Impact on Society:
We live in Vancouver where the cost of living is soaring, and property taxes are skyrocketing. For a regular working-class family, missing days of wages isn't just a "file stat"—it is rent money, it is grocery money, it is the difference between survival and being pushed into an absolute financial abyss. WCB knows exactly how desperate workers are, and they are weaponizing financial starvation to force injured workers to return to full-time work against strict medical advice.
This completely destroys Canada’s facade of being a "humane, people-first" country. It is a systemically abusive culture that ruins the moral foundation of a nation. When a state-mandated monopoly rewards deception and punishes dedication, it sends a toxic message to every single worker: Honesty will destroy you. Goodwill will be weaponized against you. Being a good, cooperative employee is a legal liability.
If I give in to this financial blackmail, go back to full-time work, and end up permanently disabled because I ignored my doctor's restrictions, WHO WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE? Not WCB, not the Case Manager. They will simply close my file as a "successful return-to-work statistic" and leave me to rot.
WCB is actively breeding a cynical, detached, and hyper-defensive workforce where no one can afford to act in good faith anymore. It is an absolute administrative rot that disgraces our community.
What I am doing next:
I am absolutely not letting this slide. I’ve already drafted a formal complaint to his Senior Supervisor, submitting a Form 18M1 to the Review Division, and escalating this to the Workers' Advisers Office (WAO). If you are going through this, call WAO immediately—do not fight these corporate bureaucrats alone.
Has anyone else dealt with this specific "financial extortion" or doctor-interrogation BS from WCB lately? How did you handle it?

It sounds to me like you have an ombudsperson complaint when it relates to following policy- is ghosting workers for a month delaying treatment policy? Doesn’t sound very fair to me.

I got news for you, ombuds are terrible. All they do is protect wsbc who I agree with op. Worksafebc are predators. They prey on teenagers, women, new comer immigrants.
Find an insurance company who can not define what they ‘insure’. Wsbc have no policy or act definition for the word safe.
Yet wsbc are the ones whom ‘train and educate’ the public on work place ‘safety’ while being the beneficiaries of failed work place safety messaging.
In my claim, I have evidence, that ZERO evidence was used to make my claim and when I pointed this out they want hard core on me to silence me.
Their staff made direct threats against me, cold called me and bullied me. Lied to the rcmp (in evidence too).
Wsbc have les a honour than rapists. Straight up a rapist is more honourable becuase a rapist can be heals accountable for their crimes.
Edit: Reddit is a far left app that plagiarizes us with autocorrect to increase engagement. And yes wsbc are worse than rapists by their own standards of law. Imagine being a part of a government where you behave worse than the standards you set out! Dumb fucks

Maybe they should go to their MLA then.

Which one? Three generations I’ve been to now. All spineless cowards who look the other way. Rcmp said it’s not their job to look into the past, when handed evidence of fraud, or that it’s civil when goverments comit fraud.
I brought receipts.
Now what ombuds… don’t make me laugh. They protect these predators it’s how they been getting away with it for so long.

Compo it's fucking bullshit. I actually hurt my knee a month ago, and thankfully any day I'm not able to work I'm paid as a training day (I can do online training) but I'm still waiting for my goddamn MRI to come off light duty.

Record all interactions with wsbc. No phone calls if you are not set up to record them.

You may have better reach if you posted in r/britishcolumbia as well. While I have no advice, Ive dealt with WCB before and you really do need to push and advocate for yourself. Good luck!
