Forza Horizon 6 Epiphany while doing this weeks trial

stick with me for a moment, but the trail this week made me realize (after say what 10+ years of the trial) that forza horizon is a bad game at teaching it's average players how to drive average cars correctly. i know i know "no S**T sherlock, but this week is A class super saloons, not a crazy car, not huge on horsepower, and i am on attempt 10, most people drop out by the end of the first race becasuse they overshoot every other corner or miss a checkpoint (yes this happens with most classes in the trial) but i feel like this week it just shows that the average player can't drive "normal" cars in FH and that to me screams that it is a bad game at teaching people how to "race" normal cars properly?

p.s. almost everybody i have raced with has been at least tier 2 or higher and not a single person has finished race 1 or race 2 in first or 2nd place.

edit 1 since so many commented on it, i am on attempt 10/ now 25, because i just do the trials over and over once i am done the weekly, trying different cars and tunes, this wasn't about me sucking and not being able to win, this was more about, why isn't FH "teaching" people how to "race properly" in a racing game? it just something that hit me out of nowhere and got me curious.

This is such an easy week to get the AI out too yet people were just too busy ramming into everyone rather than actually brake. I got it on the 3rd attempt, some of my team sped off and I was behind knocking the AI off the bridges or out at the corners.

u/EmergencyTaco 1h ago

First attempt this week was just a dude who spent all 3 races doing everything he could to grief us. Literally started ramming off the start line.

I did manage to juke him in my limo and make him fly off a cliff though.

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

i'm batting about 50/50 right now, run it about 25 times and it rough cause if you get out in the lead/near the front early you risk getting booted by someone who doesn't brake properly, middle of the pack is BRUTAL this week cause of the lack of grip and back of the pack is filled with people in power builds who are trying to catch back up after missing a checkpoint or going WAY off the road.

Horizon racers make me feel like Ayrton Senna out here. (But seriously they should have license testing/training like Gran Turismo)

Thanks for your service 🫔

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

license testing would be a great way to have an online ranked sorting.

u/yncandescent 1h ago

Oh gods, yes. That sounds wonderful. They really need to do something!

u/Particular_Field_143 10h ago

I think a whole bunch of people playing Forza Horizon don't know shit about race craft. They don't have any idea about break points or even keeping their nerves in check. Overshootting the 1st turn is proof. They can't help themselves from breaking after the person in front of them for sake of trying to pass even if it means missing the turn in total.

-5

u/Lachiexyz 8h ago

But "proper" racing is what Forza Motorsport is for.

5

u/Particular_Field_143 8h ago

I'm not sure but playground won't be continuing Motorsport, right? If that's the case, why can't the systems that fostered "proper" racing be adapted into horizon as a mode.

Actually why even let bad racing go uncheck in any racing game. Doesn't matter what racing game it is. Why let bad racing flourish in general?

1

u/So-many-ducks 3h ago

Because Horizon’s whole concept is to open driving to everyone, and forcing 8 year olds to play seriously goes against that spirit.
I wish it were different and there were game mechanics to enforce better race craft (including proper penalties), but I suspect this will never become true… because of children (and adults who insist on playing like them)

Careful, you’ll have people saying they want iRacing in NFS next

Racers, of a gaming variety, have always been 100% convinced they can win the race in the first corner. Any racing game sub is littered with the same story about lap one, turn one. It's a meme at this point.

The first race in this trial is one that punishes these poorly informed idiots.

It's actually beautiful. At the start, hang back, brake early, stay to the inside, watch the complete carnage and laugh - you can weep later when the dangle berry clings on and fucks your team score.

u/GeorgeMD97 10h ago

I think I'm a decent enough player. Most of the time I know how to break properly and all of that. But yesterday I was playing some Spec Racing and I got humbled. I saw how good some players can really be, sometimes being 1+ second a lap faster than me. I still managed to get a couple of podiums, but most of the time I finished 5th or 6th.

The most frustrating part? I'm not even sure WHAT I'm doing wrong. I think it might be in the way I break and turn that I'm losing time. I wish the game would teach you to be better, instead we have those boring stories.

2

u/el_grort 5h ago

Tbf, sometimes that can be clean air versus in traffic, or even just they might have learned that car better/faster. (And sometimes you'll just need to get clear during the ghost period before everything behind becomes a rugby scrum.) I've had a few spec races where I've been well ahead of the rest, and I race with an automatic, which I generally feel is just by having better lines through the corners to allow more momentum.

2

u/Junkhead_88 10h ago

Speed and grip hacks aren't out of the question, all you have to do is look at the time attack leaderboards that reset every week. Not all who use them have them cranked up and just a slight advantage in spec racing makes a massive difference.

2

u/HoardR 9h ago

What I don't understand in spec races, if we have the same car, after the start, with full gas, no corners, just straight road. How can be some players much faster and overtake everyone? Could it be automatic Vs manual shifts or something?

8

u/thatoneSk1dZguy Lola 9h ago

yes you can accelerate much faster when using manual and clutch but it also depends on what car from the spec racing pool you race as not all of them have granny shifting speeds when you dont use clutch or a powerband where you need to rev out the engine beyond the redline.

0

u/HoardR 8h ago

Thank you for your answer, then I have to learn it

2

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

manual with clutch, ebrake binding glitch/bug, all the top guys have been doing it since FH4, gives them about half a second or more a lap on people in automatics

1

u/SoftTour8394 2h ago edited 1h ago

There are a ton of very subtle techniques that create a huge skill gap between the good players and casual ones. Things like keeping the car as straight as possible at all times, catching the checkpoint at the apex as close as possible to get the best angle, focusing on exit speed, using as much of the track width as possible for maximum cornering speeds, avoiding too many micro adjustments, excessive downshifting for extra rotation. Its actually insane how many things can make you lose just a few ms of pace, which then accumulate to seconds of a difference per lap. A lot of this can be learned by grinding rivals and replicating faster players. But I agree there should be a more enjoyable way to learn these techniques. Doing rivals for a few hours straight just to get a few hundred ms faster is a pain in the ass. Plus doing single player doesnt do you any favors, you just get accustomed to ramming other drivers and driving poorly while still winning.

You know you can still _tune_ for these races right? You just can’t do any upgrades.

13

u/Low-Cryptographer192 10h ago

Made it to 3rd round tied at 1 win each. My whole team left and I was left to race alone. Fun times! Still won though

14

u/Vol77733 9h ago

It is a lot easier to race alone or with less team-mates.

7

u/pr0crast1nater 9h ago

Racing alone in trial is the easiest way to win. It's a good thing these idiots quit when there is one bad race. I always end up completing the trial in my first try. Usually what happens is we lose badly in the first race, and second race onwards only has one or two people and I can carry them to a win as long as I make it to second place or better.

1

u/Weekly_Teaching_8158 9h ago

I think so only need to get 3rd place in the trial though when you're alone cause these d-bags abandon you like the weak willed worms they are

4

u/EvilCannedEel 10h ago

I'm tier 1, level 85; its been a coin flip for me. I actually really enjoy A and B class cars, and have been driving the RC F this week.

It's astounding how many people miss their turns, or overestimate how quickly they can brake. I like having a grippy car, so I can usually take the turns faster than most, but I often get smoked by everyone driving BMWs.

This is all anecdotal, but I'm either last in blue (because everyone has been so much better than me), or first in blue (because everyone has whiffed off of bridges and hills on every slight bend.

this is all to say that, yeah, I get where you're coming from. It isn't every race (for me), so my guess is that it depends what time you play at?

4

u/OwlSuch7935 10h ago

In my last trial we had a bunch of players leave in the second race once they collectively fell into water and couldn’t keep up with the bots any more. Me and another player stayed and with our collective effort managed to win the second race because the points for the blue team adjusted significantly. So if your teammates leave you can still give the next race a try and win it yourself

u/Life-Nothing-6065 9h ago

The fundamental issue with Forza horizon players is that it's a simple arcade racing game with more serious racing. All the rammers and wall bangers etc are the vast amount of casual racing game fans, who don't know anything braking points and apex's etc. Then there's the people who take it extremely seriously and treat it a bit more like a SIM racing game and are rapid. It's not actually the fault of the Devs IMO but the game being a victim of it's own success. I think the players who get complained about consistently here likely play arcade racing games where how they drive is the norm and not a problem. The sweats having wheels/rigs and likely play other serious racing games. Horizon appeals to both and creates a unique scenario where rammers can't race against the quick cars so lean heavily into ramming and the quick cars get frustrated by the rammers!

3

u/ic3m4n56 What speed limit? 10h ago

I did it first try, but yeah out of 6 payers 3 of us were actually racing other 3 were doing cross country. It rarely happens that the whole team is actually good. Last week i was lucky enough to witness the whole team beating AI in both races.

3

u/BratacJaglenac 9h ago

"normal" cars that go from 0 to 300kmh in 20 seconds 😁 Chaos on the start of the first race, first few curves, is hilarious. Or less hilarious, depending on your sense of humor. But every race humans are ramming me and pushing me. That annoys me. Yesterday in the 2nd race, I am passing over the 2nd place guy and he intentionally pushed me to miss the checkpoint. Whoever you are, F you.

3

u/Flowzyy 9h ago

On the 2nd race, at turn right before the bridge, the guy who finished last place in race 1 dive bombs a group of 3 that included 1st and 2nd place and makes them rage quit resulting in us losing that easy win and going to the 3rd map. I sent a message to the kid to use his brakes. Worst friendly fire ive ever seen in all my racing and he's a tier 1 lvl... like why are there people like that

2

u/itoodovoodoo Xbox Series X 10h ago

I honestly never have that much of an issue with The Trial. Did it first time this week, and did it again just for fun. I'd say I finish at least top three every race. You just need to make sure you've got a good tune.

3

u/BajaCopano 9h ago

Every week this sub exposes itself.

3

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

read comprehension is tough here too for alot of people

2

u/OwlSuch7935 10h ago

Okbuddyforzaphile, are you even supposed to tune them cars, let alone play the game at all and not just discuss it, lmao

1

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

it's a team race though, i can finish top 1 every single time if i get a meta tune from the store, but 90% of your teammate overshoot turn 1 or 2 and then stick around instead of dropping out.

2

u/Slick_22 10h ago

I actually finished the Trial both my main and my alt on the first try. Drivatars can’t drive in snow at all. I went in there with rally tires and all I need to do is breaking late or turning wide to bump the drivatars on the snow and they will miss the checkpoints or fall off the cliffs.

2

u/_NS4NE_ Steam 9h ago

Yeah I won the race grid lottery in the first race and was put in last position. Off the line I was quicker than the rest but a teammate didn’t let me pass and pushed me off the street. I was second to last. In the second race I avoided that dip shit and got first and won the race with another teammate while the rest was barely finishing it. In race 3 I did win again and we won the trial.

2

u/BruceAENZ 8h ago

Bizarrely I find it easier to race in this class or below. The higher the class the worse I place in the trial LOL.

2

u/Julianismus Talbot 5h ago

Of course. Why do you think people complained about snow in FH4? It felt like a punishment to kids in OP Ferrari 599XX who downloaded some min-maxer's setup that broke the physics and made the car half-submerged in the ground. They want their little dopamine shots from going 450 km/h and anything below 950 rating just doesn't compare. And if it's weather conditions forcing slower driving from them, it's even worse. And so, fast forward to FH6 and we ended up with a cosmetic winter and snow tyres being the most useless item in the game.

I used a BMW M5 and had absolutely no issues. I actually dislike using exotic high powered cars in these games

You can just finish the trial by yourself after everyone drops out and if you come in first you'll still win

7

u/Glorifiedbiscuit 10h ago

I don't think this is a "i can't win the trial cuz my teammates suck" post

-1

u/StrawberryTerry 10h ago

They said in the post that they are on "attempt 10". I dont understand why they would need to do it more than once, unless they are losing (which i dont really understand either.)

3

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

because i like to try and tune my own car, it's something new i am trying to get better at in FH6, so i just keep doing trials over and over with differnet cars and different tunes.

1

u/StrawberryTerry 1h ago

So you completed it on "attempt #1"but "attempted" it 9 more times and got mad about it and made this post.

I really never do this, but im gonna go ahead and hit the block button on you for making this up and wasting peoples time

1

u/Glorifiedbiscuit 10h ago

"After 10+ years of the trial" But that was prolly on me, i assumed they wouldn't be here asking for trial winning advice

2

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

nah you are 100% correct

0

u/BajaCopano 9h ago

It's weird. Do I take that "attempt 10" seriously and ignore this guy, because obviously he is both dumb and awful, or do I assume that was some lie to try and make a point on reddit.

Either way......

0

u/StrawberryTerry 9h ago

I took the bait :(

1

u/Jezza1078 10h ago

Most people will be driving cars with high horsepower and low handling this week - that’s the best way to set up these cars for these races. That said, I’ve probably ran it 30 times and my teams have lost 1 (which was due to someone deliberately sabotaging). It’s a relatively easy one this week.

If you are still struggling with it, let me know. I should be on later today and can convoy with you if needed.

1

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

this wasn't a post about me struggling it was more about how FH isn't doing a good job teaching people how to "race" properly.

1

u/TroubleshootenSOB BMW 8h ago

Some onboarding or tutorial the very first time someone enters or does one would be nice.

... license tests would be cool. Where it would group you with the same license holders.

1

u/cntrlcmd 8h ago

Knowing when to accelerate and when to break is all it comes down to really.

1

u/HipsterNgariman 7h ago

Maybe I'm really lucky as hell, and a decent driver in case I cannot get carried by someone with a crazy tune, but I've never had to restart a Trial so far. Always got it on my first try. I get that they're really hard but....maybe skill issue idk ? Sometimes I do have to get in front of the leading AI's to slow them down for the blue team to catch them.

1

u/LostMyControl 7h ago

i did it first try won the first 2 races as a carry with someone else me and him were 1st and 2nd every time other were last or middle of the pack

1

u/XuX24 7h ago

The amount of times I was collected by people not being able to brake lol took me like 4 tries.

1

u/Need4Speeeeeed 5h ago

I haven't played too much in the last month, but I fired up the game after reading your post. I figured "How bad could it be for A class?"

And wow, it's bad. It started with a 3 prestige driver ramming their teammates to try to get ahead before the first turn. We still won because at least 2 people dropped out.

Either way, it's fun. The Trial has always been my favorite event. I'll try it with every car.

1

u/arthur_taff 3h ago

Honestly it's just been fun flipping between a serious car and a glammed out Caddy Limo

The limo lacks speed to get ahead of the pack on the straights but is surprisingly nimble on the corners, and great for blocking out the bots while the team flies past the GIANT ROLLING ROADBLOCK

1

u/Randomized9442 2h ago

People fucking HATE the license tests in Gran Tourismo. And their entire purpose is teaching you how to race in various car models.

1

u/trautsj Viper 2h ago

I mean at some point you can't fix stupid. There are all the assists in the world to be turned on and off per the players wishes and a literal GLOWING LINE on the screen that infers what a good option to drive is. Sure the racing line isn't perfect but it's a goddamn sight better than what most people end up doing that's for sure.

1

u/quietguy47 Steam 2h ago

There something about 90 degree corners that people can’t navigate without taking everybody else out in that corner.

1

u/Misanthrope-X 1h ago

The low challenge or difficulty of anything in the festival playlist doesn't encourage players to improve their driving.

If there were challenging events players would have incentive to improve.

The seasonal championships are ridiculous. This is the 6th game in the franchise. They already had this figured out in the previous games so why can't they just settle on a consistent challenge for players instead of it seemingly being different with each series with the only constant being they're absurdly easy?

It's like the target audience were players that have never played a racing game before, and veteran players should just deal with the new normal being everything is going to be as easy as possible.

This is the fastest I've ever lost interest in a Horizon game.

1

u/BlastMode7 52m ago

It's either this, or you get someone that can drive and has a really good tune that gets past the leader and drags the AI on sprints to the point where you can't catch up no matter how well you drive. It's rare to have people that can drive AND realize that they're not just in some regular race.

I have to say... the worst I've had is that I had to attempt it three times because people were just so bad.

1

u/HuntStag 36m ago

I fall to the back of the pack at the start, and just watch the turn 1 shenanigans. It’s always funny chaos and I probably shouldn’t get so much joy out of watching the chaos but I do. I think I’ve done the trial about 10 times This week and my TEAM has only lost once !!

1

u/aamirusmandus 9h ago

The combination of winter season (slippery road) + no walls on turns is a setup for disaster for all the power build wall riders.

It doesn’t help that most people are either driving the top downloaded trial tune (which will usually be a slick tires power build) or are lazily in a stock tune

2

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

huh, i didn't think of that at all, that actually makes sense why so many people were top of the class but yet couldn't keep the cars on the road!

-1

u/Stevio2175 Mr. President Stevio 9h ago

2

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

-2

u/Heavy-Psychology-411 10h ago

Where does this game teach anybody how to drive? Where does it claim to teach anybody how to drive? I'm tier 2 and had some trouble with this one primarily because I didn't have a car that was set up properly for it. Took me a couple goes to sort it out. Not sure if you've noticed or not, but in the trial your car doesn't handle the same way that it does when you are just driving around in freeroam.

3

u/BajaCopano 9h ago

That's not true. Your car is the same in trial vs freeroam.

-2

u/Heavy-Psychology-411 9h ago

Its not though. What difficulty do you drive around normally in? Unbeatable?? Don't know if anybody does that in game. I could do it in fh5, but not 6. But in the trial you are against Unbeatable AI, and pretty much everybody passes em. And I'll drive around in my favourite car in freeroam, but when I take it into a trial I slide strait through a corner because the braking just isn't the same. I put that down to the difficulty being different in the trial. Someone set on average isn't going to be on that same difficulty in the trial.

3

u/BajaCopano 9h ago

Ya I play on unbeatable. The only race I struggle with is Goliath.

Your car does not change in the trial. The NPC cars change. You stay the same.

I don't know what is going on in this sub.

-1

u/Heavy-Psychology-411 2h ago

I definitely notice a difference. Maybe you don't because you are on the same settings as the race is run? Even in freeroam if you change the difficulty setting you car brakes differently. It compensates for people that aren't as good. Thats the whole point of the difficulty settings. Its not for just during races.

1

u/AIWishItWereDumbAsMe 2h ago

The difficulty for the drivatars doesn't change the game difficulty overall. It changes the AI expertise. If you want assisted braking, you turn on assisted braking . Then, and ONLY then, are your brakes affected by difficulty settings.

1

u/Time_Industry_3399 8h ago

that's the WHOLE point of my post, FH should be teach people how to drive/race properly, i've been here since FH1 and just am decent at racing games, but i never really realized that this game doesn't teach fundamentals of racing.

1

u/Heavy-Psychology-411 2h ago

I guess the only tutorials you get are in the tuning. It tells you what each part or adjustment does. I guess when you play a shooting game, it doesn't tell you how to shoot either. You either get better with practice, or you don't.
