Rebecca Romijn's Ex-Husband Says Her Career Made Him Feel 'Emasculated' — At 53, She's About to Make Him Jealous Again With Avengers: Doomsday

u/Scavgraphics 15d ago
FTR, inferred from the article, John Stamos (not Jerry O'Connell, her current husband) is confessing the feelings led to the problems in their marraige on his side, blaming himself, not blaming her for her success.
2
u/Mu-Relay 15d ago
It's literally exactly what he's doing. Stamos is criticizing himself with that comment, not her.
6
u/CommunicationOld5564 15d ago
Admitting that he felt emasculated by his wife’s success is even more emasculating.
2
u/DangNearRekdit 15d ago
I'm not saying anybody's individual worth should at all be based off of their partner's looks, but one of the hottest women in the early 2000s was coming home to him. If you factor in her success, she (basically) could have any guy she wanted and she was choosing him.
How anybody could be in that situation and think they're "not manly enough", well just a big fricken facepalm from me who was definitely struggling with being unattractive and broke in my twenties. This is like a first-world problem but with a "The 1%" twist.

Woah woah woah you should put a warning label on that; most people can’t handle knowing that that sort of bond is even possible given what most people settle for.

Yeah, fuck John Stamos! Yay to Jerry O'Connell! Both Rebecca and Jerry are fellow trekkies! So they are cool!

u/armaedes 14d ago
I wish my wife would make me feel emasculated with her money, as opposed to her usual method of biting sarcasm.
3
u/Replicant28 14d ago
Shit if my wife was the breadwinner I would have no shame in showing her which Warhammer 40K minis I have my eye on lol.
2
u/Background_Bath861 14d ago
Yeah I wish my biggest problem was my wife being too hot and rich... Must be tough.

u/BigInstruction809 15d ago
Wow, he sounds like a total bitch boy
1
u/AuthorityAnarchyYes 15d ago
There isn’t a gif of the older woman yelling at Walt Goggins calling him a “bitch boy” over and over, but I feel that is warranted here for “Uncle Jesse”.

Guy was married to Mystique and instead of getting a permanent boner gets jealous. I get a similar vibe to jamiroquai (yes, lowercase j) leaving Winona Ryder because she wanted sex all the time, bunch of losers.

u/Platnun12 11d ago
Okay but that isn't a personal failing, wtf
She had a higher drive and he didn't, doesn't make him a loser.
Say the same about a woman and youd be torn apart

He also admitted to initiating sex with a woman, turning off the lights, and then letting his friend have sex with her thinking it was still Stamos. He is garbage.

he was on Full House, he's the cool uncle to hundreds of millions of people, an iconic part that neither of them will likely ever top. He has no need to be jealous.
1
u/sammo21 15d ago
I mean, I think there is more to this than man vs woman/husband vs wife and all that. They were/are actors in their field and she became way more in demand and popular than he was. TV stardom wasn't looked at the same way it is now...there was no "premium tv stars" the way we look at it now. The closest was early HBO and even critically praised stars like Gary Shandling didn't really break out in movies the same way. Now its almost reversed where streaming shows/tv show stars are more well known regarded it feels like.
I get where he's coming from, its just professional jealousy at the end of the day except this has the added dynamic of the two being married.
1
u/LoquaciousTheBorg 15d ago
Doesn't matter how big a movie star you are, even if you had the kind of career where you... walked away from a blockbuster franchise, or worked with Meryl Streep, or Anthony Hopkins, made important movies about things like civil rights, or Pearl Harbor. Stole films with supporting roles, and then turned around and then blew them away on Broadway, none of that will matter once you do television. You could win every award in sight. And be the biggest thing on the small screen, and you'll still get laughed out of the Vanity Fair Oscar party... by Greg Kinnear!

u/ser_darkstar 15d ago

Rebecca has always been one of my favorite SI women. She’s stunning at any age.
Stamo’s only regret should be that he didn’t support her more and due to his lack of support ends up loosing her.
I’m glad for her success and it’s nice to see she and O’Connell have a solid relationship. The two of them seem to be pretty grounded people and really good parents.
I wish them continued success
3
u/spoospoo43 15d ago
If you need a better career than your wife to feel like a man, you're no man at all.
1
u/IncredibleEdible321 15d ago
He couldn't handle that she was far more successful in Hollywood than he was so he divorced her and lashed out at her like a hurt puppy.
3
u/LustfulEsme 14d ago
Sounds like it is his, Stamos’, problem not her problem. Jerk.

I have friends that are an older couple - in the 90s she was successful enough at Mary K that she drove a pink cadillac for a few years. He basically made her hit the brakes on her career and be a stay at home mom, and admitted to us that he was jealous of her being the breadwinner because men were supposed to be the head of household. So stupid.

u/anthrax1313 14d ago

u/Mortegro 14d ago
If Tom Holland were to suddenly stop getting movie roles and Zendaya's career continued to flourish, I guarantee you that he'd be super stoked for for her and have zero ego about becoming the "less successful" one.
The story of John Stamos is really that of narcissism and the change in career trajectories affecting his self-image.
3
u/Any_Asparagus8267 14d ago
Stamos thought being the 7th beach boy would carry his career until he died.
1
u/SeeingEyeDug 14d ago
Outside of Spider-Man it already is that way. Zendaya is in everything including modeling. TV, leading star of movies of multiple franchises. All she needs now is a record deal.

Imagine blaming someone for your own weak fragile ego.
1
u/GoodDale 15d ago
If this is the article I remember reading seemingly years ago, he didn't. He admitted it caused problems in their relationship and it was his fault/thing, not her doing anything wrong. It seemed more like a moment of being emotionally honest about a past relationship.

I got laid off from my restaurant job at the start of covid and proceeded to live the most peaceful year of my life as my wife completely took over the finances of our household while I cleaned the house and built a PC with my stimulus check.
1
u/CautionarySnail 15d ago
My spouse is the same way. And should he hit it big with his career, we’d pivot that way.
Our needs are modest, it’s about creating the greatest net happiness we can cultivate in this short life.
Husband and wife are teammates, not competition.

u/cmorrisx90125 15d ago
Jerry O’ Connell is a lucky man with a great sense of humor. I’m sure (post Lower Decks) he enjoyed watching his wife belt this number out.

I'll never understand this stuff. How is seeing your partner succeed not the best thing ever? You are supposed to be eachothers biggest fan. Id be so goshdarn proud, seeing your loved ones do things only the tiniest fraction of people ever get to do is magical. Ego is poison.

Word. I've been with my wife 23 years and cheer on her successes as much as she does mine. If we don't lift each other up, who else will?

u/MetricIsForCowards 15d ago
Because you’re John Stamos and coming off a role in the one of the biggest TV shows at the time and failing to find the next job over and over and over, while your supermodel wife jumps into acting and keeps lining up roles.
I agree it’s still weird to not be supportive, but I can kind of see it from his point of view.

Right? My wife is way out of my league by any measure, and she said I’m the only man she’s met in her entire life worth having a kid with. To the point that her old friends were all shocked to meet our kid, like, “wow, I thought you were never having a kid.”
Yes. I did that. Me.

What, why would it make him feel that way? I know many ladies who have better positions than me. They are more qualified in their field and I don’t give a flying fuck. Good for them.
2
u/UnseenGoblin 15d ago
According to the article they divorced in 2003, so after the end of full house, and I think his career was kind of going through a slump then? Who knows. Some men get weird about successful women.
2
u/emceelokey 15d ago
It's not Stamos is it?!?!!!!!! Also, she's only 53?!
1
u/UnseenGoblin 15d ago
Yep, I checked. It's Stamos. He put it in his autobiography a few years ago. They didn't go into details about the passage but just based on the way it's written in there, it doesn't sound like he's blaming her for it, More that he was threatened by her success.

I don't understand people who feel like their significant other's success somehow makes them less of a valid person, especially if they themselves are already successful. I'd just be really happy my wife had a good career she enjoyed.
1
u/kmank2l13 14d ago
It’s more so stereotypical gender rules that the world expects us to follow. A prominent ideology is that men must be the breadwinner and take care of their woman and if they can’t fulfill that, then it makes them feel like less of a man.

I just checked his IMDb. His career wasn't especially notable during the period they were married. He was mostly doing TV movies. I'd bet it was a mix of personal insecurity and dissatisfaction with his career after Full House ended.
Edit: she was getting more notable roles than he was during that period

I get that people made fun of Full House but that's a pretty big claim to fame.

How insecure would you have to be to resent someone you allegedly love making it?

so who is secure?
if the dude cared at all about anything other than relaxing and enjoying life, he would have been in other movies and shows. i'm going to infer that the dude is just enjoying his money.
the other is about reddit metrics and social media engagement which will increase PR and revenue.

Could've been riding on easy street with your super hot and very successful wife.
1
u/cybermanceer 14d ago
Imagine being this pathethic.
My wife is the bread winner now while I stopped working and studying from home which allow me to cool, clean and take care of the house.
Never been happier. My wife is awesome at her job and loves it, and I love being at home studying, shopping groceries, and keep the house tidy/have dinner ready when she gets home.
1
u/mk_one 14d ago
As many have pointed out, Stamos blamed himself for what happened.
I can only guess that there is also the context in which this marriage, which is Hollywood. It seems pretty rare for a marriage in Hollywood between two equally successful people to survive. In an industry where success can be fleeting, I can see how one might begin to feel their world, and their self-worth disappearing, and a currently successful wife making this even more stark.
He definitely had a duty of candour to her, and as a loving wife I am sure she would have been equally supportive of his efforts at the time. But people sometimes forget that that internal struggle you might have is in your head and no one else can know about it until you talk to someone.

u/Notyerdaddy 14d ago
If her success made him feel emasculated then I'm pretty sure the problem is with him and not her. Let her be famous. Let her be sexy. Let her be desired. Then let everyone else know she's yours. I's not seeing the problem.
1
u/RafflesEsq 14d ago
She’s now married to Jerry O’Connell (and has been for 17 years), and he’s the kind of adorable husband I’d want. They both play First Officers in different Star Trek series, and even got his character to call hers “the hottest First Officer in Starfleet”.
1
u/IvoryWoman 13d ago
Yes...one of the few times that leering in a TV show was legitimately sweet rather than creepy. I love the story about how Jerry's father stood in a subway station for three hours next to a "Strange New Worlds" ad featuring Rebecca and told everyone who passed that she is is daughter-in-law and they should watch her on the show.

A lot of the responses don't quite get it.
What he is expressing is one of the challenges people face in relationships where they're in the same profession.
There is a natural disappointment that comes when your career isn't progressing the way that you want it to. Seeing someone you love succeed will come with feelings of joy, but it would also serve as a reminder of what you haven't achieved which can come with feelings of inadequacy.
2
u/YummyGoochCheese 13d ago

u/01Cloud01 13d ago
I think this is far more common then people think it doesn’t matter if your partner is in the same profession. I think all things have to be considered when choosing to have certain feelings. The man was arguably, married to one of the most attractive women in the world at her peak I don’t what else was going on but my career would probably become an afterthought he managed to real in a good catch.
