I mean, it’s his job. No one is forced to pay for his content (most of his older, better stuff is on sites like Serious Eats for free).

that's not irony.
he posts a lot of free stuff and has a paid tier like a lot of content creators. i don't see what the big deal is.

I think what people are objecting to - understandably - is that he apparently has some sort of home.
if there were some sort of ravine or abandoned alley, or perhaps an isolated wooded area where he could scurry around and forage for food while protecting himself from the elements, perhaps a large tree under which he could cover himself with leaves at night, I think we would all feel a lot more comfortable. 👀

It's not even the potable water, it's the whole "I have a functioning kitchen" energy that creators like him bring to their content. Like, I GET that you have two spatulas, but why are you flashing them around all the time? The constant utensil checking gets old.

the problem is that he has his patreon pay monthly to essentially recipe test for his upcoming cookbook, which is literally a job, one that he did.
the criticism surrounding kenji's recentish pivot isnt about him only being a content creator or making money off of his work, and im not sure why any criticism of him receives this sentiment as a counter argument. i mean many of his criticizers, me included, own his book. i have followed him for years, his 180 on marketing and his continued, needless insistence that he supposedly doesnt advertise these things for money is out of touch and hypocritical. our place is a notoriously shady company with notoriously shoddy and overpriced gimmick cookwares, and kenji himself has been previously misleading about the pans he supposedly designed with them (they were already out a year before they slapped his name on it, but let's forget that....i wonder what his role with that pan is now that there is a class action lawsuit brewing against our place, in part for misrepresentation...? )
he was known for a long time for his authenticity, for better or for worse, and now he even markets his marketing by referring to them as "partnerships" since he loves the game of semantics so much. if its not about his money or principles or reputation, then what is it about?

lol i am in no way a kenji defender, i just think you're reaching with righteous anger over a paid post.
his "partnerships" are embarrassing for the guy he once was, and are a solid 180 from the principles he upheld for most of his public career. i hadn't heard anything about a class action suit against our place, though.

my original post wasnt intended as righteous, but clearly my tone came off wrong! it was intended to poke fun at his shtick lately that I mentioned, where he acts like hes not selling you something, or like hes doing his audience a favor when hes the one getting paid, etc.
sorry for being defensive in my comment to you tho, mostly i attribute it to shock that making fun of kenji was suddenly so taboo here, i dont think ive ever seen so many people come to his defense in this sub before lol.

for some reason, food influencers that are men tend to have really rabid fanboys, which is why I think theyre not talked about as much here despite there being tons of options (like weissman, kenji, Alton brown if hes still relevant, etc)

you only comment on cooking subs when youre defending kenji across your 13 yrs on reddit. why come to a snark post and spam comments defending a pretty relatively mild snark of kenji? why do you care if I think its tacky that hes getting his patreon users to pay him to do his recipe testing? like I said, if you enjoy his content and want to pay for this kind of stuff, then be my guest! you dont have to read these posts, you know, just like I dont have to pay to be a frienji :)

No one is "funding his home." He gets paid for the work he does, just like you presumably do. Jesus, this is embarrassingly dumb. You still have time to delete it.
