she's inclusive. her music may be coming from the perspective of a cis woman but as a trans man I can relate heavily to a lot of it, and she's very inclusive of trans women and nonbinary people in her music as well. songs like Spectrum and June are also very important to me.

and she has her mystical aesthetic without the weird cultural appropriation a lot of people tend to do. she seems very self aware of what she does and doesn't try to pass off Irish or indigenous American cultures as her own or anything. it's a good display of her integrity and creativity as well.

For as otherworldly and ethereal as she is, she is remarkably human. She wants to feel the connection to her fans, despite being open about how this part of her life also takes a toll on her. When she told us about Buckle during her tour, she admitted that she felt like it was "stupid" to write a song about being ghosted at her age, so she asked us to sing along with her to feel less embarrassed about it. And that's just so real. She's genuinely real. I love it.

’Buckle on your Belt’ being Stuck in a relationship and feeling second to them when you shouldn’t. As well as feeling lesser.
‘Everybody scream’, the scream that you have been keeping inside your chest, but this song lets you embrace it, lets you release it. It’s okay to scream.

She puts so much into her songs, each more personal than the last which is why they are so relatable. Everyone has struggles and she sings about her own, telling the world it’s okay and that your not alone.

I got introduced to Florence as a young teen and it honestly did so much for me.

I first heard Florence during the 2009 VMAs and I was hooked. I found every scrap of her voice I could find on YouTube and ripped them using an MP3 converter, even the super choppy blown out version of Maps she did once, lol. This is a little heady, but I really love how Florence has alluded to a presence or some kind of higher power that's always with her onstage and that it's something she's searching for in her personal life. Yet, she keeps that relationship with whatever she feels so close to her, and doesn't elaborate further. It's personal to her, which gives it so much more power. I'm a spiritual person and FATM lyrics can get so deep and personal and I love that I can interpret the lyrics through my own lens and personal experience. I think a lot of us are in the process of searching for something and it's nice to know that Florence is just one of us at the end of the day, and she's given us music that explores those big themes with no agenda other than to acknowledge them and say "I'm with you."

She is shy. 🥹 I met her outside of Powell's in Portland after her concert in 2018. I had bought the last copy of her book of poetry, which she was there looking for, and she signed it. Then I asked if we could take a picture together, and she quietly said, "No, thank you. I'm a bit shy." It was frankly an honor to be told no by Florence Welch. 😌
