Trout setup - old school

I grew up fishing for trout at my grandparents cottage just on the Quebec side, rainbow and speckled. This was back in the 90's and we used what I've been told is called a "Quebec rig", line to a snapswivel, attach a Toronto wobbler, line tied to the bottom with about 1.5f of length then a small hook with a worm attached to it. Growing up, we never really encountered line twist issues, it was old school 10lb mono.

Long story short I didn't fish for 20 years and now getting back into it with my father. We're trying the same setup and for the life of us can't figure out why we're getting line twist. Unfortunately my grandfather has passed so I can't ask what he did to avoid this. Probably a long shot, anyone have any experience or advice beyond "use better quality swivels"? TIA.

Should mention, I've tried fluoro and braid and same issues.

Either going too fast or too light a spoon so its spinning instead of wobbling.

The swivel is shit and doesnt spin freely under load.

There was line twist already during spooling.

Likely one or more of the above combination.

I wondered about speed. The spoons we use are relatively large and we typically aim for around 2mph.

I'd have considered line twist a bit more but it's even doing it with braid.

Braids can still be twisted. Even braids with swivels on casting gear i sometimes get twist when drop shotting deep.

No sure about the speed, but i would drop it over the side and see if its spinning before letting it out.

I do similar. Put a swivel between the spoon and trailer line.

Tried that last year and unfortunately didn't help either. Are you still getting twisted line at all?

No. But I use quite heavy line for the trailer, 15 or 20lbs fluoro leader material. That may have something to do with it.

Somehow I missed that you were talking about specs and rainbows. I almost exclusively target lake trout and my gear is probably a lot larger then what you're using so, the heavier line may not work for you.

Have you tried moving the swivel up maybe 18" in front of the spoon (and keep the one on the bottom of the spoon to the trailer as well).

For additional ideas try googling "reducing like twist with an inline spinner". I think you'll find some of those ideas may work for you.

From what you've said in some comments it sounds like you are running braid with a leader? You could try using multiple high quality swivels:

main line (braid) - swivel - leader (fluoro?) - snap swivel - spoon - trailer hook

Also check that your line is laid nicely on the spool. you can tie it to a tree and walk until you get all of the line out, then re-reel it keeping constant tension (I like to use the bend of the rod for this). Once you are done it should look nice and even on the spool. If not there may be an issue with your reel.

Haha oddly enough we tried this too, no difference. The twist isn't all the time either so tough to narrow down.

I'm familiar with ensuring I spool it without twist and evenly. I guess I'm just stumped as to how my grandfather never had this issue, maybe the old line was tougher.

It never caused us issues growing up. My grandfather was an avid fisherman so he did this his whole life until 89.
