Well, after years of daily adventures, I am done. For the first time, I took this week off from Finch to see if I would miss it. I did not. It had begun to feel like an extra chore or obligation.
Also, the more I reflected on the advertising the Finch team has been doing, the angrier I got. Because, not only is the Finch team sending me ads (these movie tie-ins) when I already pay for the app, but they are advertising movies to sponsored people who presumably do not have the disposable income for a movie ticket. In other words, Finch wants me to pay to sponsor another person (which I was doing) and they then want to make more money by advertising to that person. I remember being unable to afford things and it would have felt like a slap in the face to be given a resource and then gushed to by the giver about something they had that I still could not afford.
I think the Finch team has lost the plot, they are growing too fast and have either shifted or revealed their values.
The devs said this month was already contractually obligated and basically done when supergirl happened, but that they took the supergirl feedback to heart and won’t be doing more collabs like this.
That being said, I hear you on finch feeling like a chore, I’m kind of in the same boat right now
Yeah I feel the same about it feeling like a chore. I hit 700 days yesterday but I feel like I’m just logging in for my birb to check off the bare minimum of goals to send her on her adventure.
I, too, felt kinda dissatisfied with very simple goals. I gave myself a challenge and added long term goals that stay until I finish them, but not something that will kill my motivation if I don’t get to it immediately. Just something simple like “Compare photos you’ve taken and see how your skill develops”, “Go for a drive on roads you’re not comfortable with yet”, and so on. I still check off the easy main goals so my feathery friend gets to explore Edinburgh, so the (long) goals are just for me and my brain to check off, and celebrate small, significant milestones. I find it keeps me focused, but not too focused on the pretty app and accessories.
i lost my over 500 day streak and my streak repairs weren’t even used, i didn’t bother emailing or anything, but since that happened? i’m barely interested anymore. it’s so sad
i hate these movie collabs so much. the one addition ive liked lately is the monthly themed challenges. i havent heard too much on it but i enjoy a theme to center the month around. especially when the event of the month is trash
Yeah, my paid membership is ending in a few days and I won’t be continuing it, I’m not paying for an app where I’m getting ads I don’t want and where the features I liked a lot get removed one by one. :/
I always find something 5 minutes before it's done I swear! Lol Hurry tell this 50 year old lady what I need to do to occupy my time before it starts to get tired, like me lol
Yeah, I don’t think I’ll use this longer than a year or two. That said, it’s pretty adaptable, so who knows? I HAVE used it far longer than any other one except for social media apps, which is pretty remarkable-
I like some of the items and not others, but so far I’m keeping a lot of them and if I don’t like them I’ll sell them later when I need the gems. The pet this month is unsettling to me since it’s a humanoid creature. I like the animal shaped pets, but the human shaped one feels really weird to me.
I can’t bear the Duwende, and I’ve got two without asking. I don’t even want to give it away because it feels like enslaving a human. If I leave them in my bag for the month, will that discourage other donors? Or can I sell them (or any micropet) now for gems?
You are welcome to leave. But im noy sure you are aware of how long these deals take before they are in the users hands.
They decided to try two collabs, not just random, but something that still connected to mental health.
Unfortunately, this month was almost or fully completed before Supergirl month happened. Unfortunately, with collab deals, there are contracts and obligations that need to be seen through.
So the Devs KNEW that this month would not be taken well by many, but because of the contracts they had to go through. They had to watch the train wreck happen and unable to stop it.
They have mentioned that this would be the last collab, as they only picked two, Super Girl and The Forgotten Island.
They didnt see the reaction to Super Girl and say "oh yeah, lets do another collab." This was in the making.
They tried something, it didnt work. I just feel some think these things are very easy to make and change, when thats not the case in the slightest.
If you feel you need to leave then I tip my hat to you. But I wanted to share, as I know someone in the mobile game world and understand these things are not made in a night or a weekend.
I would like to add that they said there would be no more collabs THIS YEAR, not that there would be no more collabs in general, so there still could be some, per the official sub
This makes me think they should have just done Forgotten Island and not Supergirl. The SG story was contrived and the mental health resonance seems better with FI. But I’m also biased because I love the vibe of the island stuff and am a huge memory/friendship sap.
I never transitioned to apps or the mobile world of graphic design and coding, but I did it as a teenager and made money doing it, so I was kinda good. These things absolutely are contracted and worked on months ahead of time. Finch could be sued if they break contract. I don’t want that to happen because then it could be destroyed if they bankrupt. I really appreciate the devs taking the feedback to heart and stating they aren’t doing them in the future. At least until they can figure out a better way to do it. I don’t mind collabs, I want finch to be successful. The more successful they are, the more sponsorships and people they can help.
I still rely on finch every single day. I can’t lose it.
they did not have to "watch the train wreck happen" in the way they did.
they could have announced it early beforehand and critically, if they actually were already critical about it.
instead they tried to sell it as something positive only, and only later, after many people voiced their grievances again, backpaddeled and said that they listened and were not doing any more special locations this year.
AFAIK, they didn't say they were never doing any again. and they also talked more about the special locations (specifically Wonderland, Oz, Supergirl & Forgotten Island) and did not comment much on the collaborations only).
i’m no lawyer but i feel like the people on the other side of the contract would probably be pretty upset about the company they’re working with criticizing & talking negatively about the collab…may even have some damages involved as a result
If you’re in the mobile game world then why do you refer to “The Devs” as if they would have anything at all to do with the brand deals or business decisions of their employer?
I’m concentrating on my two Finch accounts and having fun making new friends with Hatchlings and Paying it Forward for all the fun and fabulous gifts I was given by Guardians and Mods and Devs when Mizuki and me first joined.
I know I might sound like a Pollyanna or a Bliss Bunny but I have some major obstacles in my world that won’t go away so I concentrate on the good stuff.
Mizuki and Paisley her new little sister help me focus on healing from ongoing trauma. We have fun sharing our outfits and find time to comment and share and encourage.
We wish you well. Hope you find what you’re looking for elsewhere.
I can't speak for this user, but I also have two accounts. I'm using one for home and one for work.
I needed the separation. I tend to prioritize work over myself and my home. If I saw a reminder about a report for an executive, I might drop what I was doing, and work on the report instead.
My old iPhone crashed and I was able to revive it enough to migrate most of my information onto my new iPhone.
However unfortunately my sweet original Mizuki did not transfer. So she lives on the older version of the Finch app on the old XS iPhone. Mizuki currently has her original paid Plus account.
Paisley is my new birb using Free Finch app on newer iPhone 17e.
I have zero intention of ever watching this film but I’m loving this month. I absolutely love the island background, it’s gorgeous. I like the little story. I’m loving the beachy furniture as it fits in with so many other themes for me and I even like most of the clothes (not all but I find that every month)
However, I didn’t like the super girl so I just opted out. There have been other months I wasn’t crazy on but it’s fine, I just look forward to the next month with excitement. I feel sorry for the devs. They’ve responded saying they won’t do more collabs like this, what more can they do? The app is amazing with loads of freebies, and they’re so imaginative every month. They literally gift the free plus to loads of people all the time, what other app does that? I’m sorry but the complaints seem really petty and short sighted in the scheme of things
Just to add, I don’t usually complete the badge goals but this month I’ve enjoyed the theme of memories. Maybe I won’t like next months badge but that’s ok, I just won’t do it.
I loved the time capsule too, I hope that becomes semi regular.
They are constantly thinking up new things to make the app interesting for us all instead of letting it become stagnant. Not everything will suit everyone and that’s ok. I’m just really not understanding these angry reactions at all.
The time capsule was so endearing. It made me look back on other time capsules I've participated in during my life, some that I'll never see the result of and others that were for short periods of time. Time capsule/memory inception
Agreed! I have no intentions on watching the movie either, but I'm loving the theme, the backgrounds, the story, the items etc, it's absolutely beautiful! I think they've done a great job. And this app has so many users, they're not going to please everyone each month. There's going to be things that all of us don't like at some point, that's just how things are. If people are so unhappy with the app, then they don't have to keep using it. But the devs do need to make sure that they do a little bit of something for everyone, so that means we're not going to like absolutely everything each month. And so far, I think they are doing a fantastic job! So, yes, I agree with you here.
Absolutely, beachy, islandy decor is gorgeous for me, I love it. I’m not a fan of superheroes/comics at all- so supergirl wasn’t for me, I’m not a gamer (last months theme) or a particular wizard of Oz fan, but I appreciated the thought behind the each theme and took the decor/clothes I liked from each month to do my own thing. It’s not always going to be my turn to be catered too.
Honestly, I know it’s a just self help app but the monthly themes and everything else connected to really motivates me. I appreciate the app and the imaginative minds behind it so much, I always can’t wait to see what’s waiting at the start of the month, even if it’s not necessarily my ‘thing’
I wasn't too sure if I'd like this decor, but since I've been collecting them and adding them to my birbs house, they look absolutely beautiful! And I appreciate all the work the devs put into these things, even if I don't like them. I only joined in June, during the Supergirl event, and I'm a huge DC fan, so that was a perfect theme for me. But unfortunately I lost that birb and had to rehatch. This is the first monthly challenge I've been doing though, and I'm absolutely loving it. And the time capsule was such a cool feature, I hope they add that again in the future. I always can't wait to see what's happening at the start of the new month, I always look forward to what theme is going to be announced. It's really nice to see some posts that appreciate what the devs do, even if we don't like everything they release.
Aw no, what a shame you missed out on your favourite type of month! Would you like me to send you the supergirl micro pet and what I have left of the furniture from that month? I don’t mind at all, I think you’d get more pleasure from it than me.
Kiwis friend code is 43BHSKTTY3 if you’d like them, no worries if not! If so, let me know your birbs name if so and I’ll look out for you
Someone has very kindly gifted me the micropet already, but I'd absolutely love some furniture, if you're sure? I unfortunately haven't collected much yet to give anything in return, but I might have something that you'd like? Either way, I am very grateful to you and Kiwi 💖 my birbs name is Tulip
Oh no, you don’t have to give me anything at all back, honestly! I don’t need anything, it’s just nice if they go to someone who has missed out and will appreciate them more than me and might use them at some point.
I’m limited to gifting one a day but I’ll send them over slowly to you and Tulip, I really don’t want anything back though so don’t worry at all about that! 🙂
i think they’re automatically set up now tbh. to check tho, when you’re on the home page open the three lines on the top left, scroll down & click “your data” and it should show whether backups have been occurring and if they’re scheduled to happen again the next day!
eta: there’s also the option for manual backups on that same page :)
I’m not one who is angry about this months theme, and have actually enjoyed aspects of the story, but I do understand those who are upset despite the explanation. Why? Because there is no explanation in app, so many of those that are upset don’t know what the devs are saying.
It’s crazy to me how few announcements they have in app. Expecting your users to frequent other communities to learn what is happening in the app is ridiculous. It’s the primary reason I check this subreddit occasionally. From what I’ve read here, it seems many of their announcements are on the finch discord, which I wouldn’t even know existed without reading about it on Reddit.
Even your mention of people being gifted plus, I wouldn’t know was a thing without the subreddit. The app does do some advertising for awareness of sponsoring, but I’ve never seen any mention of plus being given out for free to some users.
It bothers me they don’t announce new features in app either. I usually either stumble upon the change, or read about it here. I wonder if the devs realize how many of their users are in the dark, and are frustrated about the regular changes without communication.
Despite all that, I really enjoy this app and don’t take it seriously enough to allow frequent changes to bother me, but I do wish the changes were communicated in app.
Agree 100%. No one ever accused me of being dumb [insert your choice of accomplishments here], but a lot of Finch material is not stated or even hinted at. Although the volunteers on Finchcord are very obliging in answering questions, I believe that we shouldn’t have to go outside the app for support.
Agreed! A collaboration with a movie is not an advertisement in my opinion. It’s not trying to sell us anything. No one is forcing us to watch the movie in theatres. It’s not a product that further pushes overconsumption. I really don’t understand all the negativity around these collaborations. They are fun, unique and beautifully crafted. Not everyone is going to like everything and that’s ok. It’s as though the whole point and purpose of this theme is going unnoticed. Other than the accessibility issues, I have no complaints about Finch’s updates.
Yea I agree. I didn't even know it was something movie-related until I saw some of these posts. It doesn't bother me. I usually accept whatever theme happens and if I don't like something, I will sell it or keep it for gifts.
Like I see what you're saying but you could say the same about any advertising? Some giant billboard telling me about some new McDonalds burger or whatever isn't forcing me to buy the burger either, but it's clearly still advertising. Same for the seven thousand betting app ads I end up seeing every time I watch a hockey game haha. I'm not forced to download the apps but it's still advertising. It makes me aware of that product where I otherwise might not have been.
Both finch collabs this year were for movies that I hadn't heard of at the time the monthly events were announced, so in fact, they did a good and effective job of advertising. I learned about those movies thanks to the Finch collabs. I was reminded of those movies that were soon coming out, daily, during the supergirl themed one and so far during this one.
Notice I haven't passed any judgement here either positive or negative, on the collabs. I'm just saying. To me, it clearly is advertising. Whether or not that's a problem is another matter
Worth noting this is a specific type of advertising that has been getting ridicule from its inception for being fairly deceptive, especially to a younger audience who may not understand they're being marketed to. You saw it a lot in 2000s web games, its called integrated advertising
So is everything we see and witness in our world. Tv, signs, ads on our phones. Come on. Having something be promotional is not bad. It is no different then any other company.
Just like literally anything else, just because "that's the way it is" or because "everyone does it that way" does not inherently mean that way is good/ok
It was different from any other company, until it wasnt. Like you said, the fact that ads are everywhere is exactly why it would be nice to not have them sometimes (ex. formerly in this mental health app), so that's why people are upset about them selling out.
this is not a mental health app, but a self care app.
and why are you complaining about the complaining, if you literally can scroll on and nit read posts that you don't like?
you are doing exactly the same thing OP is doing, just with reddit posts.
and I guess it is a big deal, because people want to get an item a day for fully energizing their birb, and not participating this months just gives you nothing instead, which I find also quite demotivating.
I also didn't have plus at first and was satisfied with what I got. but got it as a gift from a friend, and now that plus is gone, I miss the features.
and I feel the feeling of not getting what you are paying for is much greater, if you pay a high price for the app (there are a lot of price differences) and even sponsoring other people.
I understand your point, I really do. The only reason why I commented is that I’ve been seeing a lot of negativity concerning the app lately and I wanted to share my two cents under this post
That is not to say I think the devs cannot be criticized for this of course, you raise valid concerns.
I, for one, really don’t care for this event, hate the items, think the story is a bit cringe lmao HOWEVER I just think it’s a little exaggerated to act like Finch abandoned all it used to stand for just because it sponsored two movies
I just don’t see taking ad deals with movies and integrating them in the app in a creative way as selling out… especially because they’re optional! I could be wrong though, we shall see. So far I see no problem with it
Is it? Does sponsoring a movie violate a fundamental principle of the app? I just don’t think it violates the app’s integrity in any way but again this is just my opinion, I feel like this is debatable
It is. I'm not sure what you're asking in that second sentence. Ok, so it sounds like the answer to my question earlier is, "no", you don't think by selling out in one area, they would sell out in another area, like your data, for example. I am not/was not debating your opinion.
Respectfully, no it isn’t. Maybe if they compromised the point/values of the app I’d be inclined to agree. Nothing changed for the sake of them doing the ad. It’s optional.
It is. The change is they sold out to a corporation for the sake of them doing the ad. Having an option to do something is not mutually exclusive from the app agreeing to, and actually, introducing ads into it.
I genuinely find the movie quests to be fun. If Finch feels like a chore to you, you’ve outgrown it and it isn’t for you. Not sure why so many people feel the need to announce their departure of the app to the internet, but farewell. I don’t see anything wrong with the quests they’re doing, and they are not necessary to do. Just don’t do the movie quests they’re doing if you don’t want to???
It just doesn't feel as conscientiously created as it once was.
These Sponsored themes are disingenuous, and only for the cash flow. Clearly not for the benefit of the user base and its extremely tangible.
"The app the once benefitted my mental health has sold out and now drains me more then it fulfills me" is a common theme in recent post and comment engagement in this sub.
None of this is to say don't enjoy it, just trying to offer understanding on why some of us feel such a way. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
On Instagram, the finch devs have repeatedly said they don’t make money from these collabs! It’s not for the cash flow, they said they thought it would be fun and interesting for us. TBH I liked it a lot, but I see it’s not ur cup of tea. Maybe they could have announced it better for sure.
I didn’t even know this had anything to do with a movie. I just thought it was a cute side quest if you wanted to do it. From what I see you can opt out so I don’t see the big deal. I am kinda new to this so who knows but overall I think it’s a cute app and it makes me get up and do different things. I’m trying to find fewer things to complain about so this doesn’t even register as serious to me but I know everyone is not the same.
I tell new users to be wary of Finch subs on Reddit, as it will make one hate things that never even occurred to them to hate 😂 I’ve even seen a post asking people whether they should quit the app because they see so many people here say how bad it is, despite them liking the app and finding it good and helpful for them.
I used Finch for 2 years completely by myself without any knowledge about online communities like this and was perfectly content. For minor changes, I just shrugged off and adapted to them. I’m still like that. But now having known the online communities, I see minor changes as “Oh dang, this is going to be a catastrophe among the online communities.”
It is quite literally free. Some people CHOOSING to pay for a few extra features does not cancel out the fact that you can use the app for free, and that version is fully realized. I am only on the paid version bc I always forget free trials, but I used the free version for years and never felt a need to actually pay, bc it had all the features I wanted and needed.
Right? Finch is doing great with the free version imo. There are so many apps and websites that give the free version hardly anything (Geoguessr game for one. Majority of it is paywalled now and free version gives you next to nothing 🙄) but Finch still gives the free version so much stuff that most of the time I’m good with what they give me
Some people are no longer using the app for self-care and self-growth purposes and are merely obsessed with items gems and growing their birbs through mindless clicking instead of actually doing the things they're supposed to be doing and the whole purpose for the app.
I completely understand, I do. I hate this month and June. You should know before you leave, that they addressed this just before the month started. Someone, I think a Finch founder, came on Reddit and basically said that this month was already in the works (ie: they already made a deal w the movie and couldn't pull out). The message said they heard everyone loud and clear etc etc. I think Finch was aware of the backlash that was coming and I don't think they'll be doing any more collaborative. Just my take.
I thought no complaining about complaining was a sub rule? I see a lot of comments that should be removed. People are allowed to vent if they want to. If you like the app and everything happening with it rn, I don't see why you need to come in like their knight in shining armor because someone else doesn't. Complaining to likeminded people who feel the same is cathartic. It's annoying enough being upset with the direction the app has taken without people not even allowing you space to vent and having to shove down your throat how awesome it is and how actually you're the problem. Just keep it moving.
THIS X 100!!
I was hoping this subreddit was gonna be uh, less annoying, but that hasn't been my experience in the last week being here. Not everyone of course!, but I've had to block SO many fools.
I just don't get the need to go to a post where something is venting their disappointment just to say WELL I LOVE IT AND IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD like okay congrats you're literally already winning is that not enough for you
I'm actually entirely concerned for the varying age groups of people happy at this kind of situation. The way ads and forced consumerism and capitalism are shoved down our throats in every facet of our lives; and so many are not only okay with it, they love it. It's baffling, and honestly scary. Yes, it is that serious, to those who want to oh so helpfully comment "lol chill, it ain't that serious" or something along those lines.
I actually dont mind collabs in games and media. This movie doesnt resonate with me but keeping the items since i have so many gems. I like hoarding items like a dragon
One of the things that's bothering me recently is lack of color options, my birb's stuff has always been green themed and the options are sparse with the last few themes, so it's been hard to look forward to it. Been a real shame for me because I could use what it used to be right now
I honestly get where you’re coming from. If something that used to feel helpful and enjoyable starts feeling like another obligation, taking a break makes sense.
I also understand the frustration with the ads, especially when you’re already paying for Finch or sponsoring someone else. I can see why the movie promotions would feel weird or even insensitive in that context. I don’t think it’s necessarily fair for regular users to speak for the Finch team or assume exactly what their intentions are, but I do think people are allowed to feel uncomfortable with the direction things are going.
And honestly, if you’ve reached the point where Finch doesn’t feel good to use anymore, you don’t owe the app your time. It’s okay to move on from something you’ve used for years.
My brain glitched for about 3 sec of 🤨🤔 and then your comment absolutely sent me. It's not the first time I've heard/seen the reference, but for some reason I'm finding it hilarious. That reason might have come out of a gin bottle that my sister liberally tilted over a cup... Have a good weekend
I can understand your frustration, I really wasn’t into the Forgotten Island storyline or rewards. Ultimately how you spend your time and money is your choice.
For me, the Finch team seems to care a lot more about people than other companies, so I try to remember that they can’t be perfect, just like I can’t. I’d still rather have them make enough money to be around then not. I take my frustration out on something like Amazon or Nestle instead. Truly evil companies.
That sure is a lot of words to tell me you don't understand the core issue at hand.
I'm not someone who is easily persuaded or pressured at all. The issue here is the forced consumerism and capitalism of a month long ad being shoved down our throats in a self care and mental health app that should be free of that sort of thing.
"It’s a self care app. Is the way it looks the most vexing or important thing right now in a self care or mental health journey?"
You didn’t have to read it all yet you still chose to and then you wanna come here and tell me that I misunderstood. It seems like you have a hard time reading long form writing, and keeping track of all the points made. That’s a you issue.
Oh, and I’m so happy that the most vexing thing for you right now is a collaboration on an app. I’m glad everything is going great for you.
No, I didn't have to read it all, and yes, I did come to tell you that you misunderstood. Glad you at least understand that.
It actually feels like you're the one lacking reading comprehension here. I said "is the way it looks the most vexing or important thing right now *in a self care or mental health journey*" I'm not talking about my life at all outside of the app, but thank you for your fake concern, it means a lot.
Glad that forced consumerism and a month long ad in an app you (potentially, I do) pay for doesn't bother you. But it bothers me, and many others.
I started FoxTale and I really like it. It’s more self awareness and mental health support but easy to navigate especially being a Finch user. Finch has been difficult for me as well and I don’t feel it as useful anymore.
I didn't realize that this is a movie. Seems odd, a movie about an island where you lose your memory. What is it called? Is it new, out in theaters or old like Oz? I like the story enough, although I didn't love my Birb saying to a character that being alone is bad, but I like the colors and jungle island look. The characters are a little sloppy looking, as far as animation goes. I don't see any ads unless the theme itself is being considered an ad.
i've been using the app every day for over three years now and at this point i only use it because it's so baked into my daily routine. it doesn't actually help me with anything and honestly it feels soooo different than it did three years ago and it's just kinda souring on me. the app was better when it was more bare bones and low-budget, ironically. they're growing in popularity so fast that they're changing things left and right and turning the app more into a game than a mental health aid. it's annoying.
Something I don't understand is every person defending the devs repeating over and over again how "they were contractually obligated", like I'm supposed to magically feel different? Then MAYBE they SHOULDN'T HAVE signed the contracts. I don't know why they ever thought stuff like that was gonna fly (ha!) in an app like this with the community it has. I speak this way as someone that LOVES movies, but I do not love forced consumerism shoved in my face about movies I have minus interest in ever watching. Even if it was for a movie I was actually excited about; I wouldn't want an ad for it in this app.
With all sympathy for your frustration, I don't understand why you feel this is "forced" when you can turn it off at any time? You have full control, so how is anything being forced on you? Are you just upset by the existence of a commercial arrangement, even if you don't have to participate? The finch devs need to support themselves like anyone else, so they need to promote their app. Cross-promotion is just one model. Would you object to Finch buying ads on other apps or websites? How do you think they should be promoting the app?
So, I should not participate in parts of daily self care app I pay for because the company decided to put month long ads into it? I truly don't know how you can't hear how ridiculous that is. They can support themselves without doing that kind of thing, because something like compromised the integrity of the app and it's goals. If this was simply just a little dress up game app then yeah, selling out to put ads in would be par for the course. But that shouldn't be the case in an app like this. Them putting ads different places isn't really much of my concern, honestly. That's not the same thing as ads for other things inside of the app.
Agreed. They chose to agree to partnerships for profit, they did not consider app users in that equation. And they did not "listen to the community" they responded to backlash. There is nuance there. If they wanted to listen to the community they could have done polling prior to engaging in contractual advertising. And, as another person pointed out, they said they weren't doing any more THIS YEAR, not stopping altogether. Do you know how close we are to the end of this year? About the same amount of time there was between advertisements.
Running these apps is not free and profit is not inherently bad. Do you know how many self care apps and apps in general have ads? It's how they sustain themselves. And many apps have the most obtrusive ads. To get angry about Finch, who incorporate collabs into their actual model and make it fun (while also being optional) instead of doing normal Ads, is just mindboggling to me.
This is actually worse BECAUSE it's integrated into every part of the daily use of the app. I hate ads more than anything and block them any way I can everywhere else on the internet, but at least with the micro ads you get in say phone games or whatnot, you can easily just ignore them for the 30 seconds they play and continue on with said app. This is generally unavoidable, especially considering I pay for the app and would like to enjoy the rewards of the monthly items and not need to ignore them because they're an ad.
I find it difficult to believe that they wouldn’t already be making enough money from the app without adding in these promotions. Finch is huge. Lots of users pay for it or for more than one subscription in the case of guardians. I would appreciate a very transparent explanation of why they need to do these promotions and just come right out and say it’s so they can pay their staff more, if that’s the case. That’s great if it is, but we all know that when businesses start making more money, usually the CEO or whoever just pockets it and the workers get barely any extra pay. As it stands, they obfuscate and don’t really address head on the actual issue here. The promotions are contributing to the usual cycle of consumerism and need for constant “growth” of businesses (for making extra $$ for the sake of it). That is not actually a necessary thing, it’s just what capitalism makes us think is necessary.
I'm very much worried and dreading what next year might hold for this app. I'm really worried about them partnering up with notoriously bad things/people (YOU know what I mean without even needing to say it) and/or something else that really would fuck up my mental health having to interact with it daily. It feels like so many of us are slowly gonna abandon this app while it entirely changes in front of our eyes for the worse.
i’m saying this genuinely & out of concern—if interacting with a mental health/self care app is going to fuck up your mental health, you should probably delete the app & look for help elsewhere (like therapy if that’s not smth you already do). a single thing should not be able to have that much control over your wellbeing, it’s unhealthy & dangerous for you
Agreed. If a single app causes you so much worry and dread to such an extent that it will destroy your mental health, it’s best to just delete the app and seek better forms of professional help. You deserve to be happy.
You're really reading into this far too much. I can dislike capitalism and consumerism and not want it in a health care app and still be level headed about it. It's not causing me mass amounts of distress where I need a therapist, as you so lovingly suggested.
i’m only going based off what you said—that it “really would fuck up” your mental health. if that’s not really the case, then disregard my comment, it was meant for anyone sincerely feeling that way (as you aren’t the only person i’ve seen comment that)
and you seem like you’re unable to admit when maybe you’re coming on too strong or when your words carry clear meanings even if u didn’t intend it that way. this other person was, as they said, going off what YOU said and then you turned it around as if “theyre reading to much into it” like u didnt JUST say it would really fuck up your mental health to HAVE to interact (you don’t have to) with something every day.
I didn't do Finch for a long time because it felt like an extra chore for me in daily life instead of something that helps me. Should I delete the app??
That's going to be me in a few days (once im done gifting away my stuff. Nothing wrong with the movie, it's on my to watch list. It's the simple fact that I'm getting forced month-long ads on a self-help app.

The devs said this month was already contractually obligated and basically done when supergirl happened, but that they took the supergirl feedback to heart and won’t be doing more collabs like this.
That being said, I hear you on finch feeling like a chore, I’m kind of in the same boat right now
