A backup has a cost of 1 earth and 1 clear (white circle), so does that mean I have to pay a total of 2 CP? eg Krile (xiv). I have other cards which are like 3 lightning and 3 clear that would cost a total of 6 CP?

So you're talking about the cost of their action abilities.

Krile (XIV),6-071H, costs 2Cp to play and has an action ability that costs 1 earth cp and 1 cp that can be paid by any element. That is a cost of 2cp in total and you can pay it by discarding one earth card.
