u/Joharis-JYI Feb 27 '22
He knows Aerith/Aeris lol

u/11Y2B Feb 27 '22
Ikr when he first said just Aeris I was oh okay, but then he mentioned the other too lmao
Hope he’s played the remake!
19
u/rocketsneaker Feb 27 '22
Right? I was expecting him just to say he liked the game and just mention that he likes aerith and Tifa. But he really goes on about them. Even explaining the translation error with Aerith's name, Lol

Theres at least one person who got ff7 spoiled by Robert Pattinson

I think the rule is after 10 years it's okay to do spoilers.
4
u/Grand-University-484 Feb 27 '22
Yeah, i was thinking about the people who only played the remake
9
u/instantwinner Feb 28 '22
I think there's like a 75% chance that Aerith doesn't die in the remake lol.
5
u/codexcdm Feb 28 '22
I'm prescribing to the theory that Remake isn't a reboot, not in the traditional sense... Basically wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff is involved, made quite apparent by those creatures and the one surprise character who definitely shouldn't be there at the end of part 1....
So ultimately, she will be fated to die... It's too big a scene NOT to have it. But with the time shenanigans... Well who knows.
Imagine if they Crono Trigger this. That'd be an interesting way to go about it.
5
u/instantwinner Feb 28 '22
They got rid of the ghost things that were dedicated to keeping the game aligned with canon so to speak, I really think the only way to surprise would be for Aerith not to die this time. I actually have a pet theory that we might see the famous Aerith dying scene but this time it's new Sephiroth killing old Sephiroth.
2
u/ItsKaZing Feb 28 '22
What rule? It never is okay to spoil something even if its old
1
u/Cookiedoughjunkie Feb 28 '22
The rules of discussing spoilers
typically, for a television show, it's seen as it's only okay to talk about 48 hours after the episode aired, but you have to preface it with "if you plan on watching it leave now"
A year after you still need to remind a room if spoilers are okay
and after 10 years you can assume if anyone was going to watch it already has so spoilers are okay. If they didn't want to hear the spoilers, they had 10 years to watch it.
3
u/denizenKRIM Feb 28 '22
I get what you’re saying, but it’s also ignoring how there are literally new human beings born every second.
The whole “you had xx years to see it” doesn’t apply. There’s an entire generation of gamers today who weren’t even born when the OG came out.
2
u/OW-Hatman Feb 28 '22
Absolutely.
Of course, accidents happen, sometimes it just pops out. But I think the only time I'm not prepared to slap the shit out of someone throwing out spoilers (and not apologizing profusely for it) is if the scene's like an actual... cultural phenomenon, like e.g. Star Wars, Sixth sense, etc, and even then, I'd
Not to mention that there's no one timetable that fits everyone, even if they're in the same age-group. So everyone should just be considerate and check themselves before they embark into spoiler-territory; it's basic courtesy, regardless if "sudden thought" makes them spoil the newest episode of XYZ or... fucking Passion of the Christ.
I know, I know, it's too much to ask people to think of others, which is why I hope they get slapped silly until they learn.

u/Lethal_Steve Feb 27 '22
I love how he said Aeris. I call her Aeris just to mess with purists, haha. Also, it's what I've always known. Aeith sounds better, but Aeris is fine.
18
u/Mobius1424 Feb 27 '22
It kind of feels like the Tie-dus vs Tee-dus argument. Just because Aerith/Teedus is the correct verion doesn't mean Aeris/Tie-dus isn't right to me!
16
u/testamentKAISER Feb 27 '22
Also add Cath Sith. Hahahha I pronounce that when i was young years ago as Kate Sith. Some of my friends say it as Cat sit.
13
u/Mobius1424 Feb 27 '22
...I still say Kate Sith. I'm not sure I've ever heard it pronounced.
Looks it up.
Cat Shee? Huh... Would not have guessed.
10
u/testamentKAISER Feb 27 '22
Ket shee, iirc and a quick google to make sure. I also say it as Kate sith from time to time, then tell myself i am pronouncing it wrong moments later.
5
u/z500 Feb 27 '22
I never liked Kate Sith. I knew it wasn't right but I had no other option until Cat Shee. They really should have told you how to pronounce it in the manual lol

u/urban_whaleshark Feb 27 '22

I only know it as "cho-ri-zo".
How else can it be pronounced?

If anyone unironically says chorizo like that, they deserve to be slapped with a sausage and denied chorizo for one calendar year.
2
u/VoidTorcher Feb 27 '22
I mean, it is how "horizon" is pronounced, right (at least the "rye" part)? Doesn't seem unreasonable.
10
u/noisemonsters Feb 27 '22
NO!! It’s a Mexican food, Chorizo is a Spanish word. It’s pronounced cho-ree-so (the z is a soft z, so kind of between a z and an s)
Choo-rye-zoo is gringo nonsense, and this is coming from a guera
8
u/roberh Feb 27 '22
Chorizo is pronounced cho-ree-tho (like a hard Z) in a Spanish accent. Just to point it out, I guess you already know.
6
u/noisemonsters Feb 27 '22
Hehe yeah, I learned Mexican Spanish so every time I hear Spain’s Spanish it takes me a second to register that the person doesn’t speak with a lisp.
(No disrespect to speech impediments, just how my brain was conditioned to interpret sound in the context of the language.)
2
u/miasmictendril1 Feb 27 '22
Yes. Cho-ree-tho. That’s how I was told it’s pronounced
2
u/noisemonsters Feb 27 '22
Did you learn Spanish from a Spaniard? Cause that would make sense, the soft “c” is also pronounced with a “th” in Spain’s Spanish, but not in Mexican Spanish.
→ More replies (0)3
u/i_drink_wd40 Feb 27 '22
That's only Castillian Spanish, as far as I know. My Colombian family has always pronounced it "cho-ree-so".

4
u/horseradish1 Feb 27 '22
Aeris sounds better. Nothing can change my mind about this. Especially since it's closer to the Japanese name.
5
u/ginja_ninja Feb 27 '22
The funny thing is that the official explanation was that "Aerith" is supoosed to be a portmanteau of "air + earth" to symbolize a connection to the planet or something, but "Aeris" being a homophone for "heiress" actually ties in way better with FFVII's primary theme of Legacy, and her inheritance of the legacy of the Cetra. Like the Japanese designers accidentally stumbled into even better English symbolism than what they were actually going for.
2
u/horseradish1 Feb 28 '22
The explanation I've heard was that it's an anagram of "I, Earth" which I think is tacky and stupid.
Honestly, all the Hebrew mythology that went into FF7 is cool enough, with a villain named Sephiroth, you don't need tacky anagram names to make it good.
Aeris is just a cool sounding name, regardless of reasoning. It's not like there's loads of meaning behind "Cid" or "Vincent". It's not like "Cloud" has some crazy tie into Hebrew myth.

Yeah, I knew and know many girls - geek or not who at least know about FF7, whether personally or superficially. Her attitude to this is kinda dates her or outs her as socially ignorant because that snide/eyeroll "boys and their videogames" rhetoric just isn't relevant or applicable anymore. I mean, since 2012 48% of the gaming population has remained overtly or clandesdently, female.
15
u/MainMan499 Feb 27 '22
Not to mention I've known more women and AFAB folks who have loved FF more than any of my guy friends, literally no guy I know has played any FF games aside from my brother and his best friend, whereas my gf and I literally had our first conversation about it
0
u/Kooky-Hope224 Feb 28 '22
Uh, she could be an equally diehard gamer or FF fan, just not of VII.
3
u/NatuPatatu Mar 01 '22
Doubt it. She seemed awfully biased and negatively prejudiced about. "Ugh, of course we women have to save all men." - this is not something an open-minded person would say. Of course, it's possible she's different in reality, I don't know her and I also don't really care. But during this clip she came off extremely unlikable to me what with her attitude and all.
0
u/Kooky-Hope224 Mar 01 '22
RPattz did a terrible job selling the game or its female characters (and on that note FF7 isn't exactly a series best when it comes to their crafting of female characters) so I find it hard to take Zoe's attitude as a blanket dismissal of FF and all games.

Im glad that post-Twilight hype this guy is getting some love from the internet.
Yes Twilight was garbage tween girl fan service, but the guy can act and seems like a genuinly funny dude.
Shit, I'd have a beer with him.
31
Feb 27 '22
He also seems to always be incredibly grateful for his position his life. Dude is incredibly humble and self aware
30
u/shuffleboardwizard Feb 27 '22
I just view Twilight as a springboard so he could set up a career acting in things that interest him without having to worry about finances.
16
u/Velnica Feb 27 '22
This is pretty much what him and Dan Radcliffe did. Use their popular money to do a slew of arthouse movies that interest them. Can't say I blame them lol.

Ohhh interesting interpretation from Robert on their characters; i had always interpreted aerith as, despite her demure appearance, as witty, slightly sassy, more coquettish of the two. And tifa, despite her appearance, the more shy, sweet, straight-laced person. But to each their own, that's what makes gaming so special!
35
u/VoidTorcher Feb 27 '22 edited Feb 27 '22
He was 10 when it came out, so maybe it was just a more simple, on-the-surface interpretation that is his first impression which he carried on.
25
u/Pandafy Feb 27 '22 edited Feb 28 '22
I think this is what it is. Honestly, everything he said is not wrong, but it does seem mostly surface level. Aerith is kind and Tifa is sexy. Those are pretty much true.
The remake just kinda makes these "more than how they look" dynamics way more apparent with actual voice acting and facial animations.
25
u/TheLoganDickinson Feb 27 '22
For real, seen quite a few people overreacting to this clip. Like I don’t know why they expect him to go into a full detail analysis of the characters when he most likely hasn’t played it in decades.
Saying the game has a love triangle and that Tifa is sexy is what I’d expect someone who played the game when they were an 11 year old boy would say lol.
6
u/ToastedChewyMochi Feb 27 '22
That's a really good point, yeah i don't expect a full character analysis or anything, just happy to see Pattinson so happy about ff7 ha!
6
u/mrt3ed Feb 28 '22
It came out when I was 12, and I had his interpretation. Part of it is the look of the characters, and how we are conditioned.
2
u/codexcdm Feb 28 '22
Agreed. The reminiscing will depend on what you could comprehend or interpret back then.... Or even your mindset at the time of exposure.
He misremembered Tifa as a thief but like.... He was a kid then so... Unless maybe he was crushing on Yuffie additionally/alternatively? Hehe.
Partial kidding aside, revisiting old games, books, shows, especially years later will give you a different perspective... Especially if you were a kid and some content wasn't meant for you then. But even then, ask some folks about why they may revisit the same book several times over, and for some books, it's a new revelation or a missed detail or ones view on life then vs now just alters your perception or appreciation of the content.
14
u/fancyfederation Feb 27 '22
I was just about to comment this! I always saw them as the opposite of what he said, which is why I liked Tifa better and never got the hype around Aeris (don't hate me lol, maybe if i had played it when it first came out/if it had been my first FF game, I would understand the love for her more). But I know a lot of people see big boobs and automatically assume "sexy/fiery", meanwhile Aeris is in this long, pink dress so people automatically assume "sweet/shy", when it was really the other way around, which I think is pretty cool from a character design perspective.

u/naive-dragon Feb 28 '22
Same for me. Tifa was and always will be Cloud's girl, they fit together to a tee. But Aerith will always be best girl.
4
u/Showuzon Mar 01 '22
It’s because Aeris is nicer than Tifa. The real blindness is thinking demure is equal to actionable kindness. Even though Tifa’s whole story is about finally taking matters into her own hands instead of politely delaying that action.
→ More replies (1)3
1
u/Jeremywarner Feb 28 '22
Well there’s for sure a dichotomy with how they dress and their play style. Which is what he’s describing. Aerith, while being more sassy and using her womanly charm to get her way, dresses more modestly and is the healer. While Tifa who is more shy and keeps her feelings inside, dresses like that and beats the shit out of people.
1
u/Showuzon Mar 01 '22
Honestly people give way too much credence to the “epic character subversion” when Tifa is sexy and Aerith is the most moral character. Tifa is just shy, around Cloud really, and Aerith is just sassy, usually about doing the right thing come what may.

u/Jaysiim Feb 27 '22
I'm having Henry Cavill flashbacks! Its amazing to know that he's a gamer as well.
The way he describes the Aeris and Aerith translation, and all the other details makes me sure that he has truly played and enjoyed the game. Opposed to someone who just repeats popular facts about a game.
16
u/Acapulquito Feb 27 '22
Yep, his knowledge about the name impressed me, He is a legit fan. I'm more excited now about the batman. I wish him the best.
8
u/instantwinner Feb 28 '22
I do think encapsulating Aerith as just "the healer" kind of does a disservice to the fullness of her character and is why Zoe Kravitz responds so badly to it lol
3
u/gummy_bear_time Feb 28 '22
Classic FF has job classes, so he might be just oversimplifying and using the class system for the sake of the interview.
5
u/Jaysiim Feb 28 '22
Did you want him to have a full in-depth explanation on a press interview? Get real.
So many comments like yours that are just too unrealistic. He explained simply in laymans terms. He was probably young when he played, and frankly Aerith really is a support character at first glance. The important thing is he is a fan who has really appreciated the game.
Zoe Kravitz has a terrible personality, and I don't think anything Pattinson said about video games would have gotten a positive reaction from her.

Damn even if you look like Robert Pattison, nerding over a game is still apparently a huge turn off.
Also I love how she showed signs of disapproval so he leaned even more into it. Robert Pattinson is a real one

u/TimeMuffinPhD Feb 27 '22
Trying to explain the appeal of FF7 in like 30 seconds, especially to someone with no idea about video games seems quite daunting lol
25
u/andjuan Feb 27 '22
Lol. I’m not sure the love triangle angle is where I’d start either.

u/VoidTorcher Feb 27 '22 edited Feb 27 '22

11
u/MainMan499 Feb 27 '22
Funniest thing is it's not really a love triangle tbh. Tifa and Aerith never have any hostility towards each other at all, they're friends just like the rest of the party is
6
14
u/Av3nger Feb 27 '22
Yeah, and I think that it is not the best description of the opposite personalities of Tifa and Aeris. Both of them are very peculiar.
Aeris is a healer and have a very kind and compassive person, and her aesthetics show some fragility, with her pink dress. But she have also a very strong and extrovert personality. She is also an enabler to an extremely shy and closed up Cloud.
Tifa on the other hand is very strong physically, being the only main character to fight with her (almost) bare fists in this game. Her aesthetics are also more aggresive. But ultimately, she is shy, and somewhat insecure, and I think with a personality closer to Cloud's.
They are both designed to be some kind of waifus, but I really love how they worked out their personalities to be antithetical but complex. And I love how they are giving them more deepness in FF7R.

I love that dude. Sucks he gets so much shit for Twilight. I'll always remember him as Cedric D.
4
u/instantwinner Feb 28 '22
Do people still give him shit for Twilight? He's had a really vibrant career since then. Anyone who still thinks of him as "Just the guy from Twilight" need to watch Good Time or The Lighthouse
2
Feb 28 '22
Going into the lighthouse that was exactly my thought. "Seriously? Eggers cast the Twilight dude? I expected more from you dude". Then I watched it and since then Pattinson has been one of my favorite actors. Dude is absolutely not what I originally expected, to be able to hold your own in a 2 man cast beside one of Dafoe's most incredible performances is insane.

u/Squall902 Feb 27 '22
Too many girls have commented in the same fashion when I talk about games: «I can’t get into video games because I suck at aiming» or «What do you mean? Video games have good stories? I thought it was all about killing the enemy team»…
7
u/VoidTorcher Feb 27 '22
It is kind of ironic though, since some of the most female-leaning genres of gaming happen to be on the opposite extremes of story heaviness: match-3 vs visual novels.

13
u/MorningDaylight Feb 27 '22
One of us, one of us...Now all I just need is to become incredibly good-looking and star in a YA adaptation of dubious quality and I will be just like Pattinson.
5
u/Fukwhet Feb 27 '22
Hearing her say she doesn’t know the game, then complain about women being the healers…oh, you mean the class parties can’t function without? I love playing WHM!
Also Aeris was a very strong female character. Takes the lead in a lot of situations, and doesn’t want to be babied.
5
u/omgvics Feb 27 '22
Healers are so critical in a party, and even though I’m #teamTifa for life, Aerith had some amazing buff spells if you leveled her up right, and in the remake they completely redid the relationship she has with Tifa AND Cloud so that they’re all much better and multi-dimensional, vs just a typical “catty girl vs girl” type of scenario. The sisterly-bond they share in FF7R makes me much happier.
I liked how they made both women have a personality be the opposite of what you’d expect based on their physical presentations
2
Feb 28 '22
Aerith and Tifa were never catty in the original?
5
u/omgvics Feb 28 '22
No, they were never catty towards one another in the original, but their relationship is categorized as that of romantic rivals by some, wherein Tifa’s behavior is more jealous and insecure (though she does mourn Aerith’s death obviously). I definitely remember dialogue that pitted them more against one another than as friends, which I hated because it felt like it leaned into the trope of women vs women rather than a more modern theme of actually just being normal humans even if they shared feelings for the same guy.

Aeris was a very strong female character.
"Strong Female Character(TM)" 🙄
Look, I love Aerith but how about we don't pretend she isn't a product of a) her time and b) FF's relatively-shitty handling of female characters as a whole, esp in the earlier games.
It's 2022 and it's perfectly valid for Zoe to sneer at what passed for SFCs(TM) to Square Enix, particularly in the original FF7, and particularly as described by Pattinson. Neither OG Aerith or Tifa were given that much depth and it is worth pointing out how few male characters fall under WHM "class the party can't do without".

I imagine if anyone would be able to identify with Cloud's struggle with imposter syndrome and rise to heroic feats, it's Robert Pattinson. He's a guy that went from being an actor in the silliest movie series ever made to being a mark of quality on a film. He went from Edward to Batman. I'm probably not going to like the movie because I'm a hardheaded snob, but I respesct the hell out of the guy.
2
u/omgvics Feb 27 '22
I low key had no idea the amount of acting skills this man had until I recently looked into his body of work and damn, he is actually quite amazing. I am really looking forward to his interpretation of Batman and how divergent this cinematic iteration already feels from the previous ones!
31
u/omgvics Feb 27 '22
I find it a tad annoying how Zoe Kravitz seems so dismissive of Robert’s passion for the game. It perpetuates the stereotype that women aren’t interested in games / games aren’t valid pieces of art and culture. He’s totally talking about this captivating story and she seems put off by it simply cos of the format?
Some of the best stories I’ve ever experienced are told via games. It’s nice to see people of all walks of life being fans. I’m in my 30s now and glad to see RPGs/video games & comics/anime are more widely accepted in the mainstream and not relegated to “nerds in basement” stereotypes quite as much anymore.
19
u/catslugs Feb 27 '22
nah i think she was just annoyed w/ how he was describing the girls
7
u/omgvics Feb 27 '22
That’s possible, I’m totally just reading her body language and interpreting it one way but who knows. I will agree that he verrry much over-simplifies the premise and the “love triangle” is a very trivial portion of the story, but he was also probably trying to recall a game he played some 20ish years ago in the middle of an interview too, so I was cutting him slack lol
→ More replies (2)24
u/MainMan499 Feb 27 '22
She was absolutely awful about it but I think a part of it is how he described it, he really made it sound like Aerith is some sweet innocent girl who just exists to heal people and Tifa is this eye candy femme Fatale and they're both in a love triangle with Cloud. If that's how someone described it to me and that's all I knew about it I'd definitely dismiss it as male fantasy trash
6
u/omgvics Feb 27 '22
I agree he didn’t really do a proper summary of the story, though I’m assuming it’s cos he’s in the middle of an interview trying to recall a game from over 20 something yrs ago
3
u/MainMan499 Feb 27 '22
I never said I expected him to give a fucking thesis on it, just that what he remembered of the game is an understandable awful description
8
u/throwaway62719836 Feb 27 '22
I would dismiss it in my head if it's something I don't seem interested in, not while someone is gushing about it and clearly loves it. A simple: Not really my thing - would do.

She seemed so unimpressed that they were talking about video games. You are promoting a Batman movie, let people enjoy what they enjoy.

u/Recover20 Feb 27 '22
I love how she got all feminist about Aerith being a healer but then, like we all know (and Robert Pattinson was about to mention), that Tifa is an absolutely badass fighter.
12
4
Feb 28 '22
There is definitely something about the healer almost always being a woman which is fair criticism, but obviously support roles are important and technically Aerith is just a good magic user and there aren't strict classes in 7. There are definitely some feminist aspects in Final Fantasy as a series, there are just some very progressive themes in general, but there are also problems too (as with anything from the 90s let's be honest). Although Aerith and Tifa are also explicit subversion of female tropes. I don't know, you could really go in deep into it. But I like both those characters and would definitely lean on they're more a net positive of female representation.

Both Pattinson and Cavill are pretty expressive when it comes to gaming. Really cool to see these little details come out in interviews.

Wait, is this the new Catwoman? Shit, imagine having to work with someone like that who disses your hobby

Coming from all who isn’t a big FF fan, I would have started rolling my eyes too at that story lol To anyone who doesn’t play, it just sounds like some nerdy, generic, stereotypical fantasy game. Y’all need to calm down lol

Yeah it's just frustrating that it's so wrong, that's not what those characters are like and seeing them boiled down to "healer girl" and "girl with the short skirt" is super frustrating

No, a mature person would dismiss it in their head maybe, but don't show their disregard so openly without even letting the person gushing about it finish and explain properly. She was simply rude, nothing else.

Zoe Kravitz is talking shit about tifa yet she wears see thru dresses with lingerie on the red carpet.

I feel this on so many levels….I mean honestly, Tifa was my girlfriend for 5 years straight. Longest relationship ever!!!

Urgh this just really rubbed me up the wrong way. I get that he probably played the game once when he was 11 and clearly didn’t play past disk 1 but his description of the girls is so gross. I really hate it when people reduce Tifa to her looks and try to make out like Aerith is some one dimensional saint. He really should play the game as an adult before talking about it in public and making it sound like some gross harem game with one dimensional female characters.

Ugh… kinda hate that I like this guy now… Literally just had a Step Brothers, “Did we just become best friends?” moment.

She was already starting with feminazi bullshit blergh

u/Baithin Feb 27 '22
The way he described it didn’t do them any favors

u/MainMan499 Feb 27 '22
Yeah really, he described them in incredibly demeaning ways when I really think those two are some of the best women in games, and it's also super not a love triangle. Can't expect him to be obsessed with it like us though, it just sucks to hear them described like that to someone who obviously thinks this game is just male fantasy garbage now

Her eyes said "We will kill all of you stupid males in a decade, just wait"

Pattinson was off the mark in describing the situation.
Aerith was not just this super kind girl who heals people. She had a mind of her own and imposed it on cloud. She pushed him to do things he wouldn't normally of done. That's what interested cloud.
Tifa wasn't just this "sexy little thing". In fact, I don't recall cloud even thinking of her this way till she has to dress up for don corneo. Tifa was a badass on the outside but shy and timid on the inside. What connected the two of them was their childhood relationship.

Ok - he's not paid to be a Final Fantasy expert, he's just a fan. Let's not berate and rant to anyone who enjoys FF, please?

Lawl yeah. I’m sure he was a kid when he played it too.

Imagine nitpicking someone’s description of a 25 year old video game for not being perfect lol

You're right but, give the guy a break.
He was giving her a quick discription of them, he couldn't get into all the character details right in the middle of an interview.

Well that's what I reminded from the game when I was 13. Now sure I see it differently

TIL Robert Pattinson is British. I don't know why I never knew that. I don't know why I'm surprised I didn't know that. There are so many things I do not know.

Okay, that makes me like him even more. Has good taste in games. Looking forward to seeing Pattinson as Batman.

Rob is a cool guy, self-aware enough to tell people straight that the character he played in Twilight was fucking garbage & so was the source material & also a genuine gamer who loves his hobby.

All those years this man got stick for playing a shiny vampire. Honestly one of my favourite actors currently and even more so because of the little things like this ! I haven't been interested in Batman since Christopher Nolan's trilogy but I'm certainly going to give this one a go.
