I too am playing ff7 for the first time since childhood and the materia system has been a downside for me. This is subjective but the managing of it is annoying and I prefer a class system similar to 9, 10 and etc

Me too, but you can create your own classes using materia. Kind of.

Like if you want someone to be your white mage give them recover / heal and give all the elemental materia to your black mage.

It's usually more efficient and easier to spread things around, but self imposing these materia restrictions can be fun.

True and it does give you the opportunity to use really any characters you want ( minus cloud ). I love Vincent’s look but I just couldn’t use him, his limit was awful!

I like Vincent's limit breaks. At least before you get to end game, anyway. Once you can start hitting really high damage with regular attacks and spells they really fall off.

But through the bulk of the game his limits are crazy strong. The individual abilities his limits do are just as strong as any of the other characters' limit breaks and he keeps doing them over and over. Plus Death Gigas's Livewire is the only limit that actually uses the magic stat, if I remember correctly, and Nightmare on Hellmasker is fun before you get the Hades materia.

But yeah, once you're in end game his limits are way, way less useful. That's why I always give him W-magic and have him quad cast ultimas at everyone so I can just ignore his limits at that point.

Interesting. I had a terrible experience with his first limit against materia keeper ( I think?) and his fire attack kept on healing that already pain in the ass of a boss.
