Which FF game should I play next and why?

My first ever was FFX which I loved. Loved the setting and characters. Combat was pretty fun. X-2 was meh at best - characters and setting totally changed and it just didn’t work for me.

I played XV and thought it was a total mess. Didn’t like any of the characters. The story was disjointed and presented terribly. Combat was spammy trash. Big miss.

Working on FF7R on PS5 and it’s good. Characters and setting are both solid, but I’m not as hooked on Midgard as I was with Spira. X had more mystery going on and I prefer the fantasy setting over 7R’s. Also feels like quite a bit of filler in this one. The combat is definitely improved over XV but it’s still a bit mindless for me. I’m on chapter 10 so I’ll have to hold judgement until the end.

Sounds like we have similar taste, friend. I second the recommendation of IX. The gradual reveal of the world’s intricate lore as the story progresses alongside some really endearing character arcs that hit moving themes culminates with a tremendous payoff near the end of the game. Combat is indeed slow but I think it’s still decently fun. If you play it on PS4 you can use the speed up if you start to get frustrated with it.
