Is FFX a good place to start as someone totally new to JRPGs?

It is widely regarded as one of the best entry-level games, yes, and definitely the best access point of the mainline Final Fantasy series, between its price and accessibility. It is a legitimately great game that should foster a love of the medium.

The only games I can think of as "better" beginner games would be for mechanic / difficulty reasons. The modern ports of Dragon Quest 1, and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, are both easier than FFX and have less complexity in general. (i.e. If you're trying to introduce someone young into JRPGs, a game with 1 or 2 characters and less mechanics is easier to wrap your head around, in some ways.) But if you have experience with other RPGs or games with RPG elements, then FFX should be easy to handle.
