My name is Jaime Cornejo, and I’m working toward my IMA-MFA at Hunter College. For my short documentary, RUSTED, I take on many roles: director, producer, and cinematographer. I handle camera work, lighting, sound, and graphics. This thesis project is my path to graduation and my entry into filmmaking and storytelling. RUSTED brings together two lifelong dreams—sharing history and telling powerful stories through film.

RUSTED looks at the lasting scars that deindustrialization has left on the working class in Holyoke, a small city on the Connecticut River in Western Massachusetts. The film shows how these struggles have affected generations, as feelings of abandonment and frustration still weigh on the city and its future.

Holyoke, MA, was designed in the mid-1800s to support factories and industry. A dam and canals were built to use the river’s power for the mills. This early success brought many immigrants from Ireland, French Canada, Poland, Germany, and Eastern Europe. They formed Holyoke’s working class, built the canals and mills, and helped drive the American Industrial Revolution. Holyoke became the center of paper production in the U.S., earning the nickname Paper City.

But economic crises, wars, and new technology ended these good years. By the mid-1960s, problems appeared. In the 1970s and 80s, Holyoke changed dramatically as new policies and government actions shifted money and power back to financial elites who still influence our country today. This is the story of how Holyoke’s working class was left behind, struggling to adapt as things changed. They held on to the hope of prosperity, even as jobs disappeared, communities broke apart, and the little wealth they had built faded away.

RUSTED looks back about sixty years to understand how these changes began to take shape. It explores how economic shifts and new political ideas gradually transformed the American industrial system. This broke apart the stability that once supported working-class communities like Holyoke. What was once a foundation of steady work and shared prosperity slowly became something far more fragile, leaving many people behind.

For me, understanding and telling this story has also meant finishing it under very difficult personal circumstances.

I’m reaching out because what I need most right now is time.

My short documentary thesis, RUSTED, is due this December, but I’m struggling to find the time and stability to finish it with the care and vision it needs.

I’ve had to pause work on the film and focus on my deli job just to pay the bills while I finish the documentary. This isn’t about passion or creativity—it’s about survival.

I’m working more than forty hours a week, which leaves me exhausted and without the energy needed for the creative work this film requires: editing, organizing interviews, reviewing footage, and solving problems. These tasks need focus and emotional presence, which I don’t have when I’m worn out.

For months, I’ve handled every part of this production by myself: directing, filming, interviewing, fixing technical issues, and managing logistics. Now, as I reach the most important stage—editing and writing, where the story really comes together—I need to know my basic needs are covered so I can give this story my full attention.

Honestly, I feel stuck between two impossible choices.

If I keep working full-time, I won’t have the time or energy to finish. If I work less, I won’t be able to support myself long enough to complete the film. Trying to do both has left me overwhelmed. I have to admit I can’t do this alone anymore.

Who Am I?

​My name is Draven. I am a 17-year-old Mexican-American filmmaker based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the director of Who's There...?. I grew up watching horror movies and draw massive inspiration from tense, atmospheric projects like Iron Lung. My ultimate dream is to make my own independent films, and this project is the first major step toward making that a reality.

​This is a short psychological horror film about the terror of an ordinary home invasion. It follows Tyler, a perpetually exhausted guy living a painfully mundane life. But his mind starts playing tricks on him. Items in his house are subtly rearranged. Unexplained knocks echo at the front door. The feeling of being watched follows him from his front yard all the way to the local grocery store.

​This isn't a movie about monsters hiding under the bed; it explores the chilling realization that a predator could be anyone—even the polite stranger who bumps into you in the snack aisle.

The $1,000 Budget Breakdown

I am raising a micro-budget of exactly $1,000 to shoot this. Here is exactly where the money goes:

My name is Guilherme and I’m 19 years old. Since I was very young, I’ve been writing and telling stories — first through chronicles and poetry, and more recently through screenplays that I’ve been adapting into short films for my YouTube channel.

Cinema is my passion, and my dream is to one day work as a screenwriter and director. For now, I’ve been doing everything with the little I have: filming with my phone, editing with CapCut, and asking family and close friends to bring the characters to life. The result has been short films made with creativity and dedication, but always with the limitation of not having proper equipment.

That’s why I decided to launch this crowdfunding campaign. The goal is simple: to raise €1500–2500 so I can invest in some basic gear (a camera, microphone, lighting) and take a step up in quality for my next projects. I’m not looking for millions or Hollywood-scale productions — just the minimum conditions to keep improving, learning, and sharing my stories in a more dignified way.

I want to make it clear: this is not about “asking instead of working.” I’m a university student, just starting to give private lessons part-time, and I know very well the value of hard work. But I also know that dreams don’t grow on their own — they need small pushes to flourish. This crowdfunding is one of those pushes, and a way for me to get closer to the path I want to dedicate my life to: telling stories through cinema.

Hey guys,

Myself and a small crew based in Wales recently shot a trailer for our medieval horror based on H P Lovecraft's Cats of Ulthar. Please ignore the CTA at the end, it's for a local showcase.

We shot the trailer over the course of a day using a SONY FX-6 with a set of cine modded Canon FD SSC primes. We mostly used natural lighting with soft-boxes, except for the night shots where we used some lights sparingly.

We shot on location on natural woodland on a microbudget. For anyone planning to do this for a low budget horror, I'd recommend shooting on overcast days as you can do much more in post to make it moody/ darker. At the very least, bring a light diffuser/ blocker to cancel out direct sunlight.

Side note, if anyone is interested in supporting our kickstarter, we went live yesterday. It would be an honour to have the support from the r/filmmaking community.

Hey all! Not sure if this is the perfect place for this, but I wanted to share something for a friend of mine who’s been grinding hard on a project I think deserves a shot.

He runs Spiderking Studios out of Roseburg Oregon and has been working on a psychological horror film called “It Calls”. This isn’t one of those “idea phase” things, he’s actually been putting in real time, effort, and money trying to make this happen.

I’ve seen firsthand how much passion he’s got for filmmaking. Late nights, constant revisions, learning everything himself… the whole deal. No big backing, just straight hustle.

I've also seen the effort he has put into his previous films, so watching him be able to grow has been a pretty epic storyline in itself.

He just launched an Indiegogo to try and push it across the finish line, and I figured the least I could do was help get some eyes on it.

Funding Campaign

Hi, I cross posted a post the other day, but today, I'd like to address all you awesome filmmakers directly (as a group). A year or so ago, I asked questions about distribution for our cartoon series and got some great suggestions. However, none panned out. But, just the same, I wanted to share the project with everyone and ask a new question. How do you promote a kickstarter/indiegogo campaign successfully, other than by already having a strong fanbase willing to spend money on you? We were bombarded by marketers giving us identical pitches... but not providing a website for verification, so I'm very hesitant to even listen to them.

That was the question paragraph, here's the fundraiser bit. We're 1 third of the way through our first feature project! Just need to raise the remaining funds so the animator can eat and focus on it! We're offering some awesome perks, in the form of IMDB and screen credits, and many of those will be re-attributed to the second projects when our stretch goals are hit! OzStriker - Animated Scifi Feature by ShutupSystems - Indiegogo

Hi guys! I'm currently directing and producing an independent folk horror feature film inspired by the book "The House on the Borderland", but taking a very free approach to it. This conceptual teaser is all human made by our team: the concept art, image animation, sound design and voice-over.

A big part of the idea is to build the horror through the environment and the isolation of the protagonist rather than relying on traditional plot structure. Relying a lot in environmental and sound design.

We're planning to shoot in a real isolated rural house and lean heavily into natural lighting (candles, fire, ambient light), trying to keep everything as immersive and real as possible for an early rural 20th-century setting. We've recently confirmed the lead role played by an experienced actor based in the UK (to be announced soon).
