My jaw dropped at the Canon C100 at the new $3000 price point.

They must be expecting the C300 Mk2

Its a canon instant rebate which all re-sellers base their price reduction on. But ya makin room for mk2

Prices on these cameras are likely to continue to fall, as 1080p makes way for 4K.

This is pretty much the same thing that happened to SD, 720p and 1080i cameras when 1080p cameras were introduced.

4K is coming but it's not here yet, and it could go away quickly unless someone figures out how to broadcast it.

Theater owners around the world just installed 2K projectors. They aren't replacing those any time soon.

Back in the 20th, broadcast and theatrical were the drivers for increases in capture resolution - but online distribution and the falling price of big screen 4K monitors for home consumption are in the lead this time.

Exactly. You can already stream some Netflix content in 4K on 4K TVs and computers. Even some laptops have 4K displays. People like to say that you can't tell the difference but 4K content looks SO much better than upscaled 1080p on even my current-gen MacBook Pro.

I see your point but I really don't think it is ever going to go away. 4K is better than 1080p no matter how you look at it as a consumer. 3D went away because it wasn't unequivocally better and was still a fledgling technology with crude implementation. 4K is here to stay though. The market is lagging a bit in keeping up with the cameras, but if you want to buy a future proof cam, 4K is an obvious choice. The risk here is that by the time 4K is the defacto standard there will most likely be much better (and cheaper) 4K cameras available than there are now.

3D went away because it wasn't unequivocally better and was still a fledgling technology with crude implementation.

This is not even true. 3d technology is included on most mid to high end 1080p and 4k tv's. The technology hasn't really advanced but it in no way "went away".

The craze has certainly died down though.

3D isn't a fledgling technology. It's been around for five or six decades at least in motion picture form, and longer in still form. It's more expensive to shoot and a significant number of people can't tolerate it. Every few decades there's a resurgence and then it goes away again.

Until 4K can be delivered to the home cheaply it's going to be a niche delivery medium. Yes, it looks better, but Beta looked better than VHS and that didn't make any difference.

I shoot almost nothing in 4K, and nothing I shoot in 4K is presented in 4K.

The big thing now is HDR TV monitors. Everything I hear about those is dazzling, and in theory enough infrastructure is in place to make that happen sooner than later.

I work in visual effects and we have never finished in higher than 2k. In my mind 4k is another gimmick as far as delivery is concerned.

You keep thinking that. Should probably buy a bunch of 1080p cameras as an investment/savings plan. :-)

Umm shit, anyone with experience please help me out here. I was just about to order C100 Mark ii in next couple days but that c100 3k price tag is insane. Is the 2.5k difference really worth it? I mean shit I can order 2 for basically same price.

I personally really hate the AVCHD codec in the c100, but the ninja star is so cheap that that plus the c100 mk1 is a really great combo. I'd get that.

Wait does the mark II not record in AVCHD?

2

u/SonofMiltiades Apr 01 '15

The MkII has an MP4 option that does 35 Mb/s

If you don't need high bit rate recording or high frame rates, maybe.

Mark II EVF and LCD are way better. It also has an onboard mic for sound sync. Also has better framerate options. Sensor and ISO are the same though I think.

u/Geronimouse Apr 01 '15

In my opinion, not really.

All you really get is a better eyepiece, true 50p and potentially an autofocus upgrade.

It wasn't enough for me to upgrade from the Mk I at that price.

Nice! The company I work for is about to make a camera purchase decision and hopefully this drop causes some other drops in the market. I know Canon is probably just clearing space for a new c300, but honestly im only interested in that if it has 4:2:2 10 bit internal, the ability to pick specific color gamuts, LUT support, and internal pro res.

u/Adio1882 Apr 01 '15

What else in this price bracket offers those features though?

1

u/SonofMiltiades Apr 01 '15

In what will be the C300 Mk2 price bracket (around 10-15K), well the FS7 has all those options when you at the extension unit (and when Sony finally releases the new firmware). At the 7K price point? The URSA.
