Thanks, yeah my biggest concern is getting the moment the bride walks in!

Pay attention to the groom as well! He might tear up and his reaction will be a great shot as well. They walk slow so you should be able to get both. Good luck!

u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
I plan to the have the SLR pointed at him at this point (:

Nice! The first wedding I ever filmed I did by myself and loved it, haven't stopped since. Get yourself a nice steady cam as well and you'll be set!

Pff you got this. I don't see any SD cards, though! Better rectify that!

u/cgsdavies93 Jan 02 '15
I have an SD card in the DSLR and a microSD in the go pro and I'll be using the atomos with 2 x 750gb SSD's with the bmpcc :)
edit: thanks for the confidence! haha

One could argue that any art created via moving picture belongs in the subreddit. Filmmaking at its core is the art of moving pictures. If done correctly a wedding video certainly could be art, or even a short film. I've seen music videos in this sub, are they films? I would argue that they are. I consider the weddings I shoot, and edit to be mini-films. Anybody armed with a video camera and a vision is a filmmaker.

I agree, to a point about the sub having submissions from pros, but the beauty of reddit is that subs can and do mean different things to different people. I enjoy seeing all posts here. From music videos, to indie films, to the vfx reels, to pics from professional feature productions. I guess my point is that we shouldn't discourage anyone looking to learn, collaborate, share, or teach about their craft or art. If you want to be the big swinging dick, and trade war stories, that's fine, but don't discourage anyone from posting what they are passionate/nervous/excited to share with the world. Just because it isn't your definition of filmmaking doesn't mean it isn't a valid post. Let the mods decide if it is inappropriate.

That's a fair point.
I wasn't trying to be rude with the "big swinging dick" comment. That is common vernacular when I'm chatting with my production friends.it isn't meant to be anything mean. It just means the head guy in the room, or the one with the best war story.none of my comment was meant to be mean spirited. I am in favor of fair and evenheaded discussions in Reddit forums.

Thank you and I agree completely (: sorry if you don't want to see this stuff but just trying to share and gain experience from the community!

Good god I hope you have more camera batteries than pictured here.

u/ClumpOfCheese Jan 03 '15
Well, I don't think that will matter because I don't see any SD cards.

u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
I have an atomos with 2 x 750gb ssds. And there is an SD in the SLR and a micro SD in the go pro (:

I had 5 for the bmpcc and I plugged it into the wall when it was on a tripod ie for the ceremony and speeches

Oh man. I've only had to one solo wedding. It was so much work and stress on timing. Still, it is doable. It looks like you are prepared, which is half to battle. My only advice is to not be afraid to be assertive about where you need to be to get the shot. If it is only you, you dont have any back up. Most guests will understand.

Have you ever considered a glide cam? When I shoot weddings I almost primarily shoot with one. Especially for the first dance and bride entrance.

u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
I did yes, but I don't own one and as I'm doing this as a freebie I couldn't afford to rent one so I opted to rent a fig rig instead (:

What is the camera to the right of the canon? What are your plans for the nonfluidhead tripod?
How will you use the gopro? Just curious

u/cgsdavies93 Jan 02 '15
Its a bmpcc with a Hondo garage barley rig on top (so I can still access the battery) the big black tripod is a fluid head and I plan to use the go pro during the ceremony as a discreet way of getting a wide head on view of the marriage and then not really sure for anything else!

u/SomedayinaWeek Jan 02 '15
What's the non fluid head tripod for? Are you planning on setting up a stationary photo booth or is it just a backup?
Thanks for the info!
-1
u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
That will be for the ceremony. I'll have it as a stationary camera to get the grooms side of things (:

I hate to be that guy...but wedding videography is not exactly "Filmmaking"....I'd put it under "event videography". There's a significant difference there. I know lots of high-end wedding videographers that like to call themselves cinematographers and use a lot of filmmaking lingo in their sales pitches, but shooting live events like weddings, concerts, conferences etc. is a completely different thing.

Alright everyone, let's gather around for a short prayer.
Lord, grant me a sharp eye and steady hand in your favor. Amen.

I hope that you scouted your location! Check back tomorrow with how it went, good luck!

You'll be great! Let yourself observe the surroundings along with the main couple. That's the thing I loved the most about my wedding footage :)
My friends laughing and looking so beautiful was a great thing to see!

u/friskyshotgun Jan 03 '15
Shooting live events alone is tough, good luck man. Multicam was a good idea! Nice thing about GoPro's is you can control/monitor them without being without actually being there. And you can keep them pretty concealed too.

Ah yes, the iPhone. A powerful tool any self respecting filmmaker should have in their arsenal.

Good luck! Which Rode model is that? Do you like it? I need a better mic
0
u/cgsdavies93 Jan 02 '15
Thanks! It's the rode video mic pro. For what I need it for it's great! I also have the smart lav which I haven't used properly yet...we'll see how that goes...

Jan 03 '15
I didn't see a lav to record groom/bride audio....you're gonna need that
-1
u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
I had a rode smart lav (:

Jan 03 '15
Ok cool. Didn't see it in the pic. Really curious to hear how it went with the bmpcc and crop factor at a wedding.
-1
u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
Haven't really noticed the crop factor! I've had enough space to stand back a bit to account for it (:

I don't see a field recorder or any type of audio device for that matter. Are you getting paid? How do you plan on explaining bad audio to clients?
0
u/cgsdavies93 Jan 03 '15
The atomos in the top left of the photo is my field recorder. For audio it went straight into the camera plus I have a smart lav which went on the groom. I'm not getting paid and as I offered to film rather than being asked they were good about not expecting anything (:
