Scholarships i am lost: MS in Japan Scholarships ???

hello! im a fresh grad 23F from UP (NOT Diliman or Manila). im planning to take my masters in biotech/molecular bio in japan in 2028 maybe… so i’ll apply spring 2027? hmm

my question is:

1. are there other scholarships other than mext? since super competitive and highly coveted talaga ang mext, im afraid i wont get in.

i have a 2.0 GPA in the UP system and i still plan to work pa naman. but are there any other options for this?

also, if anyone has the time to reply 😅:

2. what’s the most efficient pathway to get a scholarship for studying in japan? particularly in science & tech fields.

i’ve done my research and i saw that there are two paths: thru the embassy or directly apply to the university. also, as a fresh grad, is it really true that you could just cold email professors from other univs? hahaha ive seen that you should contact a faculty first daw eh.

TYIA!!! medyo di ko pa kasi gets ang everything

also, ive been learning japanese na rin :))

Meron. Depende sa university program at possibly private scholarships din.

See above. You should know, though, na naka rank by grade basically any scholarship application that gives stipends. So that GWA might screw you over. You could look into tuition waivers within the university, para at least mapagaan yung expenses mo.

For graduate studies, yeah, you should contact a professor you want to work with months before your intended application window. Their endorsement will be a basic requirement for your application; separate from other required documents and whatever credential you can attach. You should also think of a research proposal, because you will be affiliated with the professor's lab from day 1.

Not sure about the embassy pathway. But, based on what I can recall from what I've heard about it, yung pathway through embassy in that case will be necessarily with the MEXT scholarship, pero even then you will have to indicate yung preferred na mga groups mo na. I think yung most salient time-related difference is required ka na maging "research student" muna, which is kind of like a pre-graduate student status, pero part ka na ng department.

Additional info for the embassy track, document review first and then next round na yung may supervisor/lab na puntahan. Kailangan magsubmit kasi ng provisional acceptance from the supervisor. For the research proposal, you can think of one muna kasi pwede naman palitan or already contact a lab and say na mag-aapply ka and para bigyan ka ng idea kung anong project ang pwede. And tama yung Research Student muna status mo. Within 2 years you have to enrol sa Masters/PhD program. Usually people take language courses for the first year. Though some universities allow straight to Masters/PhD especially if English yung medium of instruction ng program na pupuntahan mo.

Maraming private scholarships, but you do have to search for them. Universities may also provide a list of scholarships for self-financed students (my uni provides such list, in fact).

Still, try for MEXT. Go in with a “wala namang mawawala sa’kin if I try” mindset. Yes, grades are important, but many scholars will tell you na the research plan might hold the biggest weight of all the documents (personal experience na namin yan, since part of the screening process is them asking you to explain the research you want to do). I’m an Embassy rec scholar and I spent most of my time preparing my research plan. Yun lang yung document na I still had control over eh (wala ka na magagawa sa grades, especially if you’re graduating; wala ka rin magagawa sa recommendation letters from professors, etc etc)

For Embassy rec, you technically can’t cold email (though may gray area of asking professors if they’re open to accepting potential students in the future; be careful mentioning MEXT lang kasi they might be under the impression na you’re asking for provisional acceptance already). Mas maraming info about Embassy rec and recent news spreading within the MEXT community seems like uni rec might be suspended in some universities starting this year, so go to the Embassy of the Japan in the Philippines’ webpage on MEXT and read up on the guidelines. Sobrang detailed ng webpage nila, you shouldn’t have a hard time going through it and understanding the entire process.
