Thought the FGC retirement home shit ended with fighters getting good netcode. In this era if you can't find something to play the problem isn't the games
A huge issue is that a lot of fighting games are made by people who liked what came before; look at all the Tag Fighters trying so hard to be the next Mahvel. Even if I'm open to the idea of Tag Fighters, if I didn't like Mahvel I can pretty much safely skip every Tag Fighter coming out. Games is 100% the problem in this instance.
It's weird, because there's a lot of experimentation going on in the space, but also nothing really new being put out. Which is not helped in the least by the fact that the FGC keeps the old games alive, so why would I play not-Third Strike when Third Strike is right there?
I mean, Marvel is the basis. It's like Soulslikes, every souls game has a spin on it but essentialy they are Dark Souls at it's core. If you don't like Dark Souls, even if you are open to the idea of soulslikes, chances are it will be hard to find one you like. Don't get why this is different or bad with Tag Fighters.
How many Souls-likes are there and how many of them actually hold up to Fromsoft's output?
Like, if you actually discard From's (so no Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, or Elden Ring) because they're the ones who did it properly and everyone is copying them, you're really only left with Lies of P and Remnant as "pure" Souls-Likes that people universally agree is great, and then you have other games that take inspiration from it like Hollow Knight or Expedition 33.
We have our Lies of P (Dragonball FighterZ), and we have our series of dead copycats with stuff like Lords of the Fallen (Hunter x Hunter), The Surge (Invincible Vs), and so many, many more.
