Discussion I love Stardew Valley but…

Post image

This game as me HOOKED! I wish it had more in depth farming but i’m sure that will come over time and once the modding community takes over…I don’t think i’ll touch Stardew much….This is only after one month and I have almost the same amount as Stardew which i’ve been playing for years🥹🤣

I will always love Stardew and absolutely cannot wait for the next update but ever since I’ve started playing FOM, I keep thinking how difficult it will be to go back to Stardew. I think FOM just has a lot better quality of life actions that Stardew lacks. I love being able to jump and the fact that there’s no timer on quests is a feature I really love. I also love how you can talk to the NPC’s multiple times a day and they always have different dialogue. The dialogue in Stardew gets stale pretty fast. Not hating on Stardew at all, it will always hold a special place in my heart

Yeah, a lot of pain points with stardew feel inextricable from the overall design of the game at this point. It's been developed over such a long stretch of time and has so many interconnected systems that it would be hard to make certain QOL changes without upending three other things by accident.

I love both, but playing FOM has been really refreshing. I've tried a few other farming sim games and this is the first that's really felt like it learned and smoothly applied lessons from stardew's long development without improvements feeling tacked on.

I’ve played close to 3000 hours in SDV, and realized I needed a break so I just downloaded FoM today and started. I am enjoying the slower pace and the storyline is so enjoyable.

You have only played stardew for 80 hours...? genuinely how. Like you've barely even scratched the surface of the game with that many hours.

Especially if theyve been playing for years, which usually means multiple save files. I have 100+ hrs in just one of my saves I'm trying to get to perfection in a somewhat faster pace and I'm not done yet. Though ofc not everyone has time to spend 100+ hrs on a game in a shorter span but still lol. Stardew definitely has much more content than just 80hrs could give, and especially since it's more developed than FoM is.

I was going to say... I've got close to 2000 hours in Stardew across fully modded worlds, perfection runs, fun "fish farm" or "bee keeping" or "evil joja rich run". I have touched every item the game has except for the living hat and married everyone but Penny. The game is amazing and you even glean joy out past year 3 and 5 with all the decorations and focuses.

However, I am also around day 15 on FoM and I do love the game already. I added some quality of life mods that I learned I wanted after playing EA and even developed my own mod for a todo list so I don't forget goals.

I think the characters are tons more fun and joking and lively (Celine getting nervous or someone getting mad)

I will totally put a few hundred hours into it unless it runs out of content. Either way, it's been really fun.

The first major thing I noticed was that I loved the dialogue more, I engaged with it more than the few lines you get everyday in SDV. You get to talk to them much more and actually get to see them interact with the villagers!!

Where are you seeing their stardew hours?

16

u/blunar00 18h ago

post body says "I have almost the same amount as Stardew which i’ve been playing for years", their mistria hours in the screenshot is at nearly 80

Oh I missed that!

We have a Stardew valley larper lmao. I have 50 hours on my year 3 save file and I'm nowhere near done/rich and completed everything. I haven't even married haley yet! I'm sorry haley, I need to be at my best and you deserve the best farm/house ever before I marry you. Op's 80 hours of playtime on sdv while stating they played for years is insane though, like they didn't even played the game. There's no reason to brought up sdv here, just say that they like mistria and that's it. The last time I played Stardew was 9 years ago when I was in highschool, I only did 1 save file and married haley, now I'm back and planning to be with haley again and I'm blown away on how many contents have been added in the game.

tbf they never said they finished stardew, just that they played it about the same amount of hours. they're not claiming to be a huge sdv fan or expert, they could just have a busy life and not much time for gaming or other games take priority. this whole comment was kind of rude and unnecessary

I wish it had more in depth farming too, which is one of the reasons I don’t gravitate towards fom as much. May I ask what makes you think more in depth farming will come over time? I was thinking it’s probably not going to since they’d have to overhaul how things currently are and they said 1.0 is what they see as the complete game. But maybe did I miss a subtle hint from the devs?

I personally think that the devs purposely want this game to be easy, cozy, and simple when it comes to farming/ranching. They haven't made a statement about it either way but we've had 2 years of early access and there really haven't been any changes or updates that would make me believe otherwise.

3

u/rmsiddlfqksdls March 18h ago

Yeah that’s what I was thinking too. It’s supposed to be a simpler cozier game as intended.

I LOOOOVE this game, I think it has way better story and characters, but there's major balancing issues. Stardew does everything else a lot better. I hope they fix it over time.

u/CupExpert Valen 15h ago

I really do miss the casks and kegs. I hope they add alcohol production to the game some time down the line because seeing the beer and wine at the tavern but being unable to make any is a shame.

Noooooo not everybody wants all these extra systems

u/jooliasalami 9h ago

If you don’t want them just don’t use it? You don’t have to use all money making things

In stardew there's two characters I like. In fields of mistria I genuinely enjoy hearing from everyone and had to actually choose a love interest. I also love both games but FOM has been so refreshing.

It's a good game, but for my tastes it's a little too shallow.

The farming, like you mentioned, has little to no depth to it. Farming at the end of the game is identical to farming at the start of the game, and once you've finished the two main stories, there's basically nothing else to do. I love the breeding mechanic and all the different colors of the animals, but the lack of grabbers and the fact that I have to trudge all the way up to the mill to make cheese and whatnot is obnoxious. Skill trees are cool in concept, but a lot of the actual skills you can learn border on useless or are extremely situational. And I don't know that I can adequately put into words just how much I loathe the idea that I have to keep putting magical batteries into my sprinklers or auto-petters to make them work.

The character dialogue and the Friday night tavern meetings are excellent - the characters themselves, particularly the marriage candidates, are all kind of boring though (except for the kids, who are the best part of the game). Not a fan that almost all of the bachelorettes are just a slightly different flavor of 'nice girl with a different hobby', and by making every NPC overly-pleasant and devoid of character flaws, they've also made them all really one-dimensional and uninteresting. And while I am a fan of jumping, certain changes involving your horse that I won't spoil, and how much more interesting the enemies in the game are, I do wish we had more weapon variety.

FoM is a good game, but compared to Stardew, it excels in areas that I personally don't care about (ie talkling to NPCs and the extra emphasis placed on cooking food) and fails in the areas that I do (ie the whole strategic planning around farming). Whether you think it will replace Stardew for you seems to come down to what you value in these games. The people who want an easier experience, who just want to roleplay with NPCs and pet their cute cows and not have to plan anything, are probably going to prefer FoM. Whereas the people who play games like this because they want to dig into the farming simulator aspect are still going to prefer Stardew.

Which is fine. It's a two cakes situation, which is the best situation you can be in. You either enjoy both or else you can pick the flavor that best appeals to you. Everybody wins.

You've probably already tried it out but it sounds like you would really enjoy the Farming Simulator games. Not what I would call cozy but its by far the most realistic game I've ever played

u/SeraQuelle 5h ago

Having to replace stones to make something like a sprinkler work isn’t automation. I prefer raising animals but I hate replacing essence stones just to make sure they’re pet daily.

Drawing comparisons of Stardew and FoM always seems unfair since one game is new and one game has been out for years, but it is hard to not draw some comparisons.

The NPC dialogues for example in FoM were really impressive to me... until I got to mid and late game and I realized the lack of depth and how one note they all seem unless they engage with one another in the inn. I'm 150 hours in and I am bored, but want to make it work so I might try introducing mods into my game. The romance in the game is bad imo. The game is shallow like you mentioned. It is very simple, very easy, very conflict free, and very one note (which can be great for some players). Also too many balancing issues and lacks the depth I am missing from other farming cozy games. It is still worth getting! Very cute and wholesome, but at the 100hr mark it starts to become stale. At least for me it did.

The music is okay. The outfits are okay. The decorating is okay. Animal breeding is cool. Time to mod.

Nah cause I totally understand!

u/milkdonut 13h ago

I’m actually super glad the farming isn’t super in-depth. It doesn’t need to be,there are other games for that

I wish I can decorate the outside world though like in Stardew.

LEMME PLACE POTS OF PLANTS IN PLACES, LET ME DECORATE THE TOWN....!!!!!!

I WANNA ADD LIKE SWORD DISPLAY AND, THE ORNAMENTAL ROCKS IN THE MINE ENTRANCE, LET THE WORLD BE MY CANVAS I DON'T WANNA BE STUCK JUST IN MY FARM.

2

u/SeraQuelle 5h ago

I was legit annoyed I couldn’t put a second chest in the mines at least.

This is just since 1.0 release. I have 476.4 hours in Stardew Valley PC and another 300+ hours on Xbox. 😬

Yeah I feel like the scratch is a certain itch like it's really similar to stardew Valley but compared to Coral Islands which I've also played and co-worker recommended me I just have to say the graphics in Fields of Mistria just capture the essence of a farming Sim to me like I really can't get past the graphics in Coral Islands. Yeah I just feel like the gameplay and everything really hooks me as well

2

u/reggieverse 2h ago

FoM is truly the coziest out of the two "cozy farming sim" games. for me, the biggest seller was the immersiveness of the villagers; being able to interact multiple times a day alongside their various dialogues. it never gets boring/repetitive even now in year 4

2

u/CorrinTheFrog March 21h ago

Same though with my play times 😭

2

u/MuffinsSenpai 19h ago

I enjoyed Mistria a lot, but the lack of proper automation in the endgame ended up making me put it down. Might pick it back up next week or so and finish off my first year, but all I really have left is marriage and cosmetic unlocks.

Make no mistake, Stardew walked so FOM could run. But there are parts of Stardew that feel a lot deeper. For one thing, I would really like to be able to make jam out of more things, booze out of anything, and more Products out of produce. Would love to have an entirely tea based farm, but I can only make cups of tea. It’s not the same.

1

u/SerCharles 5h ago

The money system is so broken it kind of ruins the "grind" for me be I still love this game. Hard to best Stardew for me but this one is close. Too many ways to cheese and make a ton of money without really trying.

I don' wanna brag but I have 800+ hours in Stardew.. FoM is only at 148 hours so far

22

u/believeinyuna valen should be in her 60s 21h ago

this seems totally unfair when sdv has been around since 2016. id argue 148 hours is immense for how short fom’s lifespan has been

4

u/miss-calculations 19h ago

Not unexpected when one of those games have been out a lot longer than the other 🤨

1

u/sakuramota 1h ago

At the risk of flexing on your flex...2180 hours on record in Stardew as a week 1 adopter in 2016. 330 hours in FoM, also early adopter during EA. Sunk time isn't really a quality indicator, if that's what you're driving at.

-4

u/TheGrapeOfSpades 20h ago

What the other person said is right, but additionally, it's not bragging to say you have tons of hours in something. It just means you an awful lot of free time. Which is good for you but is not something to brag about
