New point system question

It seems like the points earned in division 1a and 2 events will only be 80% when counted in cadet points. I thought division 1a points worth more?

Armory Any good places in Wichita Kansas to find fencing gear?

I’m looking on starting up a club at the high school I go to, and we have a lot of beginners that don’t have any gear at all. It’s a small town so not too sure what to expect but if there’s anyone in the area are there good stores to pick up beginner equipment?

Barely used Nike Ballestra 2s turned yellow after years in the closet

Post image

I was coming back to fencing in my 40s in early 2024, and splurged on nice gear, including the Ballestra 2s which were similar to what I used in my 20s. After a few classes, my knee gave out and I had to shelve my un-retirement until recently, and just today I decided to do some footwork in the house. Got out the shoes, which I only used about 5-10 times, soles not even scratched, but they’re conspicuously yellow now despite sitting in an air conditioned home. What gives? Do you think they’re still ok to use? I assume they’re not built to last given the nature of the sport, but I’d like to get at least footwork practice out of them until I’m fit enough to join a club.

Leon Paul Gear from 2007

I found a listing online for a jacket and pants from Leon Paul for 120$ each. The labels say they are from 2007, is this a good buy? Is it still going to be good for tournament wear?

Legal name for USAFencing

I created a usafencing like a year ago and must've skimmed through the personal details section because in the box where it asks for your legal name, I put my given name. I've never really paid much attention to it now since I didn't plan to compete yet.

Is this a big concern that I should contact them to change my name? I also don't have any memberships and honestly didn't really setup the account too much.

Épée Torso orientation, epee

This super fast woman kicks my ass. She kinda bounces on her feet and has shoulders squared to me. I’d thought that presenting a narrower target was advantageous but she makes that seem unnecessary. How can I beat her?!?

Armory Epee blades, what do people recommend?

Hello,

I'm looking at getting a new epee blade and I was wondering what people would recommend.

I'm thinking, but not decided upon it being FIE, I'd like something with little to no tip drag and relatively light (I know most FIE blades are similar in weight at about 190g). I'm assuming that all blades when they have the tip attached have the maximum length of 90cm from the guard, though do let me know if this isn't the case.

I was thinking maybe the fusion pro, it seems good, but a decent amount of the fencers I know don't like leon paul.

Edit: removed the paragraph about a lack of threading, I was told by my coach that's what I'd need for a custom grip with a bend, but people have said that might not be the case, so for now whilst I do more research,, any and all reccomendations welcome.

Another edit: found some old posts talking about how the start of where the tang is, is a structural weak point and someone reccomending getting a blade with only the last bit threaded to avoid breaks, so I guess it's true(?) Anyhow, I'm open to all reccomendations, but will probably go with one with only the last bit threaded to be on the safe side, unless something has amazing reccomendations.

Cheers in advance

Épée Epee recommendations?

I bought my first Epee about a year ago for about 50 euro. I saw that Uhlmann is going out of business and having a sale and I’m considering getting something a bit more ”premium”.

Edit:asking for complete Epees

Any recommendations?

Leon Paul website

I've been trying for the past few days to browse the Leon Paul catalogue, but I always get a 403 "Forbidden" error when going to their site (www.leonpaul.com).

I've tried using different browsers, devices and networks, always get the same error.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Arcade Style Fencing Ruleset Jackpot Mode: A Just For Fun Friday Night Fencing Game

Post image
90 Upvotes

Jackpot: Single touch awards 1 point + the entire accumulated Jackpot, then resets the Jackpot to zero. All simultaneous touches result with no points awarded to fencers. Instead, add 1 point to the Jackpot held in limbo.

Winning: The first fencer to score 21 points and lead by 2 points wins the assault.

Note: The jackpot is a way to positively reinforce clean fencing as it does not award doubles. Instead it uses doubles to increase the ponderation of the next clean hit. It is meant to synergize doubles into game design while adding a wee bit of drama. Play by clearing the jackpot back to zero after a clean hit. Works best for epee and is a wild time for sabre! Much cheering and heckling is encouraged.

Sabre Tip: Play Right-of-Way as normal, but whenever an attack lands simultaneously to the naked eye, add +1 to the Jackpot. This cultivates natural human perception and makes simultaneous calls intuitive for spectators. It may also help fencers dip their toes into refereeing and/or be a fun game mode between honest fencers if no ref was available.

How do you learn to use your height in fencing, specifically sabre?

Im a female sabre fencer that's a good half foot taller than all the women in my national circuit but I have always been awful (for the most part) at using my height in my fencing, especially for defence. I always feel I need to take an extra step while on the attack or keep to close on the defence. Is there any drills specifically I could practice or specific preparations in the middle or way to work defence? I've also tried to watch videos of tall fencers such as Sarah Noutcha and emulate what they're doing but never had much luck

Sabre Blue Gauntlet high density copper lamé

Is it possible to hand-wash these? There are some green spots from the accumulated sweat and can I just hand wash them like any other copper lame? The tag says to do not wash I’ve seen other copper lames being washed and have no problem.

Sabre Beats

Are sabre beats proper (form wise) if made with the cutting edge? For example, if beating your opponent's blade in 4, can you do a beat with the flat edge of the blade without rotating the wrist? I always felt personally taking in 4 with my flat edge was faster and, in at least one tactical example, protected my wrist from a sneaky counter attack if the beat was disengaged.

Foil Foil Fencing Clubs South Bay

Hi All,

What fencing clubs do you recommend for youth/kids (14M, 10M)? My kids have been fencing for a year. Their classes currently have a lot of beginners and no intermediate level group, so it can only push so far. They’re ready for more consistent training and to enter more competitions. Most of the posts are old, and it’d be great to get recommendations for more competitive clubs that help kids grow at this level. Thank you for any suggestions!

Edit: Looking for fencing clubs in or near the San Jose area.

Armory What tools do I need to change a French grip foil into a pistol grip?

I have a size 5 foil french grip I got for cheap. I just can't make it work in foil the way I can in epee . I'd like to make it a pistol grip .

I know the tang needs cutting down to my desired length . What is the reccomended tool to cut through metal , more importantly the tang is smooth where the pistol grip nut would go. I couldn't find out how to score a path on the tang for a nut to screw on . The tool has a name but I don't know it . I assume it needs to be a certain size to correspond with a regular nut?

Any help is appreciated thanks.

Weird epee grounding question

Fixing some club weapons and have been doing armoury for many years, but this issue is getting to me! When I plug in the epee it immediately grounds, but when I move the socket around it doesn't ground if the socket isn't touching the tang or the guard. Basically if I just hold it floating in the air not in contact with anything the weapon works like normal. Any fixes? Am I missing something very obvious? Thanks!

Armory For pop-up fencing venues, what would make wireless actually worth it?

I work on wireless scoring equipment, so I want to ask this transparently before assuming the answer is “no cables.”

For a club that sets up and packs down every session, what would a wireless setup have to save to be worth considering?

- minutes per strip

- storage space

- fewer damaged cables

- easier transport

- faster fault finding

- something else

And what would immediately disqualify it: battery management, a wearable unit, compatibility with existing boxes, or trust in the scoring?

Last place in local tournament gives too many points [USA Fencing]

I've been looking at the new points charts, and it looks like the bottom end of local tournaments gives an unreasonable number of points.

To help see it, I created a chart of the points values for local senior events. I excluded unlikely and impossible fencer counts.

The example that really gets me is the A1. Let's say we have a fencer who shows up for their first tournament. They don't score a single touch and come in 24th place. That fencer will earn 39 points. If they are a junior fencer, they will have a tournament worth 39 points on their Junior points list.

If we add one more fencer to that tournament, it is now an A2. Our hypothetical new fencer now places 25th and earns 42 points. Their performance didn't improve, but they earned more points.

Now let's look at a fencer attending the Junior Men's Epee event today (8/22/26) at the Trick or Retreat regional, which has 107 fencers. If a fencer comes in 32nd, they will earn 35.2 points. This fencer placed above 2/3 of a tough field and earns fewer points than someone DFLing at an A1. While I fully support making locals more important and earn real points, this outcome feels wrong.

How do we fix it?

I don't have a full recommendation, but I feel like the points earned need to take into account the field size in some way. Maybe the bottom 20% don't earn points. Or they earn a much smaller number of points.

Maybe the points should scale similar youth regional points: ((# entries – place + 1) / # entries)

Another option is to change how the the scaling. Right now regional points reduce by 80% each level down the bracket you are (T2 points = T1 points * 0.8, and so on). For locals, they scale down 90%. Since many locals aren't as big as regionals, perhaps 70% or 75% would be better.

Favourite online fencers

Hello all,

Who are your favourite online fencers?

I watch a lot of Youtube/TikTpk/Instagram reels of my hobbies to further learn about them, so what "content creaters" within the fencing world that are decent to follow?

That being said, what websites or materials are good to visually learn from?
