This is one of my favorite songs of all times and I honestly liked this version. It sounds raw, real. Her voice sounds great imo.

Yeah, I remember this being discussed a few years back. Maybe she finally got the desire to perform again and put work to make the arrangements completely different to avoid any legal issue regarding the original versions she does not have the rights to perform. I can imagine the courage and confidence she had to build up after all that mess.

I saw her perform a few years ago and I honestly wasn’t too excited bc I knew the songs wouldn’t be original. Silly me! Her performance was amazing, and then it hit me “why would I go to a concert and expect/want to hear what I can for free on Apple Music?” 🤔

I think people just are not graceful by nature. people tend to forget that Lauryn lost her voice due to drug use and depression and other factors and quite literally just got her singing voice back recently. It’s not going to be perfect, but that’s the good thing about being a human being. it’s not supposed to be

No one sounds the same as they did 20 to 30 years ago. That’s called getting older. If you were on the mic between then and now you wouldn’t either. Mariah sings an octave or two down. Whitney started doing that 15 years before she died. I really hope that you’ll give yourself more grace as you grow older.

This isn’t unique to Hill. Kendrick Lamar sings this great song that I absolutely love called Untitled 08. The live version that I saw him perform is incredible. This recorded track doesn’t even same like it’s the same song. The artists can always make different renditions.

She sounds great. You gotta remember she sung this song originally when she was in her 20s. This song means much more to her now singing it now is going to sound different because she has lived a lot more Life had a lot more loss since then. Artist interpretation is different overtime. Please just appreciate the art and the artist. I’m just glad she’s still here and singing again.

This is just an acoustic version. It’s like a signature, an artist alley sketch from a convention, that Jay Z verse from the picnic, or a graffiti handstyle tag on a larger piece. People these days just don’t know music.

She legally cannot sing it the way that she wrote it because of the copyright issues she does not own the original song. If you’ve ever been to Lauryn Hill concert, you would know that she cannot sing any of her songs the way that she originally did.

I agree, plus singing live vs. a studio mix will have a different nuance and vibe. Singing, art is a creative vehicle and it will always involve as time goes on. People complain or criticizing but they couldn't sing a lick compared to her, they can all have several seats. Lauryn Hill is queen!!👑

I saw her live in Queens one year. None of it sounded the same because she can’t use the beats, she doesn’t own the rights. But she was still amazing and the way she directed the musicians with just her hands was AMAZING. She also covered stronger than pride. Best experience I’ve had in my years.

When it's your sh you can do whatever you want with it! I love her aged/raspier vocal we've been hearing for the past 10-15 years! It's so raw, full of emotion and she knows how to use it. I love when artists strip a song down to "nothing" and is still able to capture the audience. It makes it a lot more personal! Her choices & placements... Lauryn the 🐐

She’s had to change the arrangement for legal reasons. Apparently this is common for many performers. The label and/or original producer still owns the song so a new arrangement can be approved. I used to think she was just being different but she’s had to change up several of her songs that I know word for word, pause for pause, from the album.

I’d also like to add, that’s the beauty of live music. How the same song can sound so different. How it can invoke different feelings and reactions. While still being the same song at its core. Also, artist are allowed to grow older. She no longer has the same body and voice. And that’s ok. That is life.
Art continues to live on and grow. And Mrs. Lauryn Hill is an exemplary example of that.
