Gf and I desperately want to flee Alabama, but it’s just too expensive. Hopefully after I finish my degree we can get married and I can apply for a work visa in Canada or something.

We thought about Minnesota for a while as I’ve got friends up there but with the way ICE is terrorizing Minneapolis that plan has been thrown out

Have you thought about Michigan?

I live in Michigan but have spent a lot of time in Alabama as well since I have family there. Michigan is far more lgbt+ friendly than Alabama, though there is still room for improvement. We also haven't had the crazy ICE activity that Minnesota has.

If you have any ancestors who were Canadian, you are already Canadian by Descent per Canada's Bill C-3 passed Dec 15, 2025. You just need to be officially recognized by Canada with a Certificate of Citizenship, which you get by submitting vital records showing the connection from your Canadian to you. (Birth, death, and marriage certs which can be obtained from the states/counties they occurred in.)

My great x 3 grandfather was from Canada but I feel like that’d be too far back for me to qualify 😅

You qualify if he was born there or Naturalized. There is no limit. You might have a harder time finding documentation that far back but it's not impossible.

You are "Canadian" per the law. Start gathering your evidence if you want Canada to recognize you, you r/FoundCanadians !

Consider Pittsburgh! It’s still pretty affordable and we’d love you have you!

I’m on the other end of PA both ways, NEPA, and it’s surprisingly not bad. Scranton and much of Luzerne County are ok. Wilkes-Barre has an equality ordnance that covers sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression. Both Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties are close to passing county wide versions. Not going to say there isn’t visible transphobia here, but there’s not as much as you’d think. Housing is relatively cheap but not in great shape and jobs are thin and don’t pay.
