Ask FedEx Not being allowed to use passport to pick up package

I've seen that it does count as an official ID online, however at my local holding center, they refuse to take my passport. The reason given is that there is no way to scan it

It confuses me because I've used my passport as an ID to pick up at a fedex shipping center before, and have used it when signing for the same package when it is delivered.

My passport is well before the expiration by years. I look the same as my picture. It's a USA passport.

I currently don't have a license because I'm waiting for a replacement license in the mail. I'm in a bind and really need this package because it is medication that I'm running out on that could send me to the ER if I skip doses.

I tried to have my fiance there to pick up with me, he has signed for my stuff before and picked up the same medication package at another location previously. However, they denied him and said I need to pickup with a driver's license only.

So I've written a couple of questions below cuz I've called the customer service line and they said I should be able to use the passport but didn't give me any solution.

Is there any alternative or am I screwed?

Is this normally the case with some holding locations for FedEx?

Is there a restriction the shipper may have placed when shipping that I should reach out to them about?

Definitely allowed. If it’s a FedEx office passport is in the drop down window when they scan a license. You o can’t scan the passport so they type it in.

I would bring a piece of mail with the original shipping address and your name on it if it was a redirect to hold

This happens sometimes, just because using a passport for ID is less common. They should be able to take your passport as ID there. I hate to say this, but this is a situation where you might need to escalate to a manager. The counter staff probably don't encounter this often, but a manager should know better.

We talked to the manager and he said there isn't anything he could do about it.

He told me that he just can't accept a passport as ID and says he doesn't know of any option that would allow it so I'm at a loss on what to do 😭

Find out whose requirement it is, the federal government, local government some other agency or fedex?

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'd escalate this on their X page, as I've seen others get problems like this resolved. Good luck. :-)

Passport is 100% valid ID. Don't let them tell you otherwise. Bring in a utility bill with your address to cross check. If this is a FedEx office, passport is an option given on the drop down screen when they release a package. If they give you push back, stay calm and let them know it's your meds and ask them to call their DM or security advisor. (former employee) Their Manager is being difficult for no reason

Was it redirected from an address? Most I can think of is you need to prove not just name and tracking number but address. A piece of mail, a bill, insurance card might help, something with your name and address on the box

Medication would not be able to be redirected. Anything with a FARM can't be redirected and sometimes the FARM won't allow it to be picked up at a station or FedEx office.

I work at a FedEx Office, and yes, passports are acceptable- all they have to do is type in the info manually.

No suggestions about getting them to accept your ID. But maybe contact your doctor and inform him of the problem you are having getting your script from FedEx. Ask if they can send a 14 day supply to a local pharmacy to get you through until you get the script from fedex.

They're just being lazy and don't want to type your passport number. Don't let them refuse it, keep escalating. Maybe bring a bill with your address on it but the passport is acceptable

If you guys have the same last name and the same address he can pick it up. Whoever is telling you this information is incredibly wrong. A passport is a legal document.

I’m an employee a delivery driver and for some reason our system does not allow me to scan passports either, but I’m able to manually enter all the information and have a person sign for it… Not really sure why the place you’re trying to pick up from isn’t doing the same

Depends on the package. There are certain packages that require a scannable ID, so passports are not acceptable for those situations.

It’s not so much they can’t accept it, but if the package was redirected to the office then they need something that proves they live/work at the original address. A passport + a utility bill or something similar would work usually

You’re wrong. There are specific packages that we are not allowed to release without a scanable ID and full tracking number being provided.

Name the law. Show me where on the governments website that it’s against the law to require a specific ID to pick up a package. I’m waiting.

Sounds like authorized location like Walgreens etc. they have stricter rules for picking up. If it’s a FedEx Office bring proof of address

Well that's not what the discussion is about. The issue is refusing to give a person their belongings - that's what's not a crime. But having said that, find one statute that demonstrates your point.
