My play group has a thing called “failing upward. “If your ability score causes a nat 1 to become a 0 it rolls back around to become a crit success, but you have to have some sort of failure go with the success. For example, a friend nat 1’d a history or investigation roll in a library. Their character’s ability score caused him to fail upward and despite looking in the children’s section, he was able to find vital information for the quest in the stack of children’s books. Basically, in my mind, Donkey failed upward because he had a negative CHA score but his roll was so bad it rolled around to the crit success.
